Husband Secretly Accepts a Promotion After Promising He Wouldn’t, Wife Finds Out From a Text Message

Marriage often requires compromise, especially when it comes to major financial and career decisions. But when one partner repeatedly makes life-changing choices in secret, the real issue may become trust rather than the decisions themselves.

That is the situation facing this Redditor, who says her husband has a history of acting first and explaining later. Years after secretly taking out a loan to buy a car she believed they could not afford, he allegedly promised he would not make another major decision without discussing it first.

Instead, she discovered by accident that he had already accepted a demanding new management position and had told nearly everyone else before telling his own wife. Scroll down to see what happened.

'Husband makes major life decisions behind my back, AITAH?'

My husband and I have very different personalities.

He’s impulsive and a dreamer while I’m the practical one who manages our household/financial logistics.

A few years ago after his dad died, he wanted to buy a 3rd “fun” car.

I told him we couldn’t afford it, but he went behind my back, took out a personal loan, and bought it anyway.

It was a huge breach of trust and was devastating for me.

Fast forward to a few weeks ago he tells me he’s considering a management position

that he’s always said he didn’t want and that would keep him at work far more than he already is.

I shared my concerns since he is a workaholic and the amount he works has already been a point of contention for us.

I told him I was worried he would accept the role without us discussing it more in depth

and he assured me he understood my concerns and wouldn’t do that.

Lo and behold he accepted the role and has been in it for a couple weeks which I found out accidentally when someone texted him congratulations.

When I confronted him about it he initially lied to me and his reasoning for not telling me is because he “knew I’d talk him out of it.”

His family, friends, coworkers, and even people at other branches knew and I didn’t.

I’m hurt because this is the 2nd major life decision he’s made behind my back after promising he wouldn’t, he lied to me,

and kept this hidden from me while telling everyone else.

He says I’m being selfish and if the roles were reversed and I didn’t tell him about taking the job,

he’d actually feel bad that I felt like I had to hide it. Am I the a__hole here?

Trust is rarely broken by one dramatic event. More often, it weakens through repeated moments when one partner realizes they were the last person to know about decisions that directly affect their shared life.

In long-term relationships, the pain is not simply that a choice was made, it is the realization that consultation was replaced with secrecy, leaving one person to wonder whether their voice still matters.

This situation is about far more than a new job or an expensive car. It reflects a recurring pattern in which one spouse makes significant decisions independently despite knowing they will affect both partners. Years earlier, the husband secretly financed a third vehicle after being told the household could not afford it.

Rather than learning from the breach of trust, he appears to have repeated the same pattern by accepting a demanding management position after explicitly promising he would discuss it first.

The fact that friends, coworkers, and extended family knew before his wife did likely intensified the hurt. She was not excluded because of timing or circumstance. She was intentionally kept in the dark while everyone else was informed.

A fresh perspective is that this conflict may not actually be about control, despite the husband’s belief that his wife would “talk him out of it.” Many impulsive people experience practical questions as obstacles rather than collaboration, especially when they strongly identify with a dream or opportunity.

Meanwhile, the more practical partner often sees those same conversations as an expression of teamwork rather than opposition. One person experiences discussion as restriction; the other experiences it as respect.

The problem emerges when avoiding disagreement becomes more important than maintaining honesty. At that point, secrecy itself becomes the issue, regardless of whether the decision ultimately proves successful.

Relationship researcher Dr. John Gottman describes trust as something built through countless everyday choices to consider a partner’s interests alongside our own.

When important decisions are repeatedly made without consultation, those moments become what he calls “sliding door” opportunities, times when partners either turn toward each other or away from one another. Consistently choosing secrecy over collaboration gradually erodes emotional safety, even if the individual decisions appear reasonable on their own.

Similarly, psychologist Dr. Harriet Lerner explains that honesty is not merely telling the truth after being caught. It also involves willingly sharing important information with the people most affected by it, particularly within close relationships built on mutual dependence.

These insights help explain why the wife’s reaction is about much more than a promotion. She is responding to a repeated message that major life choices can be made without her knowledge and that difficult conversations are something to avoid rather than navigate together.

The subsequent lie only reinforced that pattern, making the issue one of reliability instead of career advancement.

Healthy marriages do not require spouses to agree on every decision. They do require confidence that important choices will be discussed honestly before they reshape the family’s future.

If trust has been broken more than once in the same way, the priority is no longer debating whether the promotion or the car was worthwhile. It is determining whether both partners are genuinely willing to rebuild a relationship where transparency is valued more than avoiding uncomfortable conversations.

Here’s the comments of Reddit users:

These Redditors said the real issue was a lack of trust, respect, and partnership in the marriage

WaryScientist − NTA - making major life decisions should be a discussion.

He doesn’t trust you and he’s shown that you can’t trust him… is this really what you want from life?

He’s lied to you twice that you know of, and he doesn’t respect your opinions at all.

Quiet-Hamster6509 − He makes choices as if he was a single person.

I think you need to assess whether this is something you can learn to live with or

whether it's a continued pattern that goes against everything you believe for your marriage.

Me? Mmm, it wouldn't work for me. Perhaps you should stop managing everything for him and start looking out for yourself. Same behaviour.

bishbah01 − NTA. This isn’t a partnership, this is you along for the ride. Decide if you want off.

Majestic_Square_1814 − Just who he is, you want compromise, he will never give you one.

This group urged OP to protect finances and prepare an independent backup plan

Own_Space2923 − You need to lock your credit and money so he can’t blindside you again

humanityneverexisted − At this point, what is it your gaining from the relationship besides stress and some guy living with you while he's living a double life?

Meanwhile you can't even live just your one because of his recklessness and his secrecy.

It sounds like he puts being your husband as his last priority.

Also it makes me wonder did he take this management position for the money because he's in more debt than he's telling you?

I'd be taking a hard look at my relationship and secretly separating everything starting now.

You need a backup plan to escape. NTA. I have a really bad feeling there's way more secrets. Im sorry.

These commenters suggested making major decisions independently since he refuses to consult OP

OverRice2524 − I'm so sorry he doesn't value your opinions.   Maybe you need to make some big decisions without him.

Sparklingwine23 − Make a plan, save up and then surprise divorce papers on him since he likes surprises so much.

These users strongly criticized the husband’s self-centered behavior and called him the real problem

FallsOffCliffs12 − "If the roles were reversed and I didn't tell him about taking the job,

he'd actually feel bad that I had to hide it. " That is some narcissistic s__t right there.

sandtrooper73 − Ummm, NTA. In fact it sounds like you may be married to TA.

Trust is built through honesty long before disagreements arise. When promises are repeatedly broken and major choices become secrets, many felt the real question isn’t whether accepting the promotion was wrong, but whether the marriage still operates as a genuine partnership.
