Husband Wanted Breastfeeding but Complained When She Needed Help at Night

Parenting a newborn often requires both partners to make sacrifices, but disagreements can become especially difficult when one person’s choices create extra work for the other. Feeding decisions, sleep schedules, and household responsibilities can quickly reveal whether both parents feel equally supported.

The original poster (OP) shared how she has been struggling after returning to work while caring for her 4-month-old baby. Because her milk supply dropped, OP has been pumping more frequently, including during the night, while her husband helps by giving the baby a bottle.

However, her husband does not want to use formula and becomes frustrated whenever he has to wake up, leaving OP feeling guilty for asking for help. Now, OP is questioning how to handle a situation where she needs support but feels like she is being made to feel like a burden. Scroll down to see how Reddit reacted to this parenting and relationship conflict.

'My husband (26M) complains and gets frustrated with me (23F) about waking up at night to feed a bottle to our 4 MO baby so I can pump. Advice?'

My husband has always gotten frustrated about getting up at night to help with our baby.

It was really bad when we were in the newborn stage but for a couple months she started sleeping through the night.

I have recently went back to work and about a month ago our baby has started waking up again at night.

Since I’ve been back to work my supply has dropped and he absolutely does NOT want me to formula feed.

So I’ve had to pump more often to get my supply back up.

This means I have to get up a couple times at night to do so on top of feeding baby and helping her back to sleep.

I’ve tried to talk with my husband about waking up just to feed her so I can pump and we can both go back to sleep sooner.

He agrees but everytime I wake him up he complains the whole time and is frustrated in the morning when he’s tired.

He tells me he already has a hard time going to sleep and complains that he only got 7 hours of sleep.

I really do like when I can get some help but when he’s complaining the whole time it makes me feel like

I should have just let him sleep in the first place just so I don’t have to hear his complaints. I’m kind of at a loss on what to do.

I need to be at least semi-rested for my job because it requires a lot of focus(healthcare).

I don’t know how to address this matter more because everytime I do it’s the same excuse of how he needs plenty of rest

so he can take care of our baby throughout the day and he feels like he does “everything” while “I just sit there and pump.”

Which I do plenty more than just that but that’s a whole other problem in itself.

The arrival of a baby often changes a relationship in ways couples never fully expect. Sleep becomes limited, routines disappear, and tasks that once felt simple can suddenly become exhausting.

During this stage, many parents are not only trying to care for their child but also trying to feel supported by the person beside them. Feeling alone while carrying a shared responsibility can be one of the most painful parts of early parenthood.

In this situation, the OP was not asking for occasional help because she wanted to avoid responsibility. She was trying to balance caring for a four-month-old baby, maintaining breastfeeding through pumping, returning to a demanding healthcare job, and getting enough rest to function safely.

The emotional frustration came from more than waking her husband up. It came from feeling that his support was offered reluctantly, with complaints that made the help feel like another burden.

The situation also reveals a complicated disagreement about responsibility. The husband may believe that because he works hard during the day and needs sleep, nighttime disruptions are unfair. However, the OP is also working, recovering from childbirth, feeding their baby, and taking on the physical demands of pumping.

The difference is that pumping is often invisible labor. It can look like “sitting there,” while actually requiring time, planning, discomfort, and commitment.

A different perspective is that both parents may be experiencing exhaustion but interpreting fairness differently. The husband may feel overwhelmed by losing sleep, while the OP feels overwhelmed because her physical effort and mental load are not being recognized.

The bigger issue is not whether one person deserves rest. Both parents do. The issue is whether one parent’s need for rest is being prioritized over the other’s.

Family and parenting experts often explain that resentment grows when couples focus only on visible tasks instead of the total workload involved in raising a child.

Psychologist Diana Baumrind highlighted that healthy family relationships depend on balance, responsiveness, and understanding between caregivers. Modern parenting research also emphasizes that children benefit when both parents participate actively in caregiving rather than viewing one parent as the default caregiver.

This perspective helps explain why the OP feels hurt by the complaints. The problem is not only that her husband dislikes waking up. Many exhausted parents dislike nighttime wake-ups.

The painful part is that his frustration seems to communicate that helping her is an inconvenience, even though the situation exists because both parents chose to have and care for their child.

The long-term solution is not about keeping score over who is more tired. It is about recognizing that parenting is a shared responsibility, and both parents’ needs matter.

A supportive partner does not need to enjoy every difficult moment, but they should understand that their child’s care is not a favor they are doing for the other parent. It is part of being a parent.

See what others had to share with OP:

These commenters agreed that caring for a baby requires shared responsibility and sacrifice from both parents

Business_Mastodon_97 − Well he should have thought about that before having a baby. "Only" got 7 hours of sleep lol.

smez86 − Imagine having a baby and bitching that you only get 7 hours of sleep, lol. What a loser.

Flat-Replacement4828 − Straight up ask him what he thinks is FAIR to do.

Force him to try to explain how he thinks he's more deserving of sleep and less responsible for this baby than you are.

Instead of trying to trade off get-up times when my ex and I had our son, we had specific halves of the night we were each "on duty".

We argued about a lot, but we were good at splitting up the night so everyone gets to sleep.

These Redditors supported using formula if needed and emphasized that the mother’s health and choices matter

ausmed − Stop pandering to his sulking.   Say to him either you pump and he gets up to feed baby a bottle so you both get some sleep,

or you switch to formula and you can split the night in half so one of you does the early shift and one the late shift.

He doesn't get to insist you breastfeed and then just expect you to get up extra times in the night to plump while he does nothing. Jesus.

Wise-Bother9942 − Dear lord, buy formula, don't ask him, just feed her it yourself and tell him to do one if he complains.

It is your body and your choice but forcing yourself to pump and becoming sleep-deprived isn't healthy for you or your baby.

Here is what every professional will tell you, fed is the best period.

He needs to stop whining and stop dictating what you can do with your body or trying to shame you for wanting to use formula.

Do what you need to do OP for you and your baby, as for him, he can figure it out or not.

If not, you need to decide if you also want to keep dealing with this grown adult child as well as your newborn.

Electrical_Help_970 − ‘Just sit there and pump. ’? !?! Does he wanna f__king do it? What a n__ty, immature, pathetic excuse of a man.

Also, is it your husband who is telling you no formula or is your baby just not taking to it well?

Because if it’s your husband you can tell the silly b__tard that he’s not the one whose body has literally been taken from them.

YOU do what YOU feel is right. Sometimes, formula is the best option, especially considering your supply is running low.

I only ever formula fed my baby… you know why? Because I COULD because it is MY body and I make the decisions about it.

These users criticized the husband’s behavior and viewed his complaints as unfair and immature

Appropriate-Party942 − You can't not "allow" formula and then on top of that then complain about you pumping? ?????

He needs to pick a struggle. He is being a very very bad parent and husband.

I have no real advice because I would crash out and contemplate divorce😅

rescuesquad704 − Hold up. He’s staying home with the baby but bitching at you about getting up at night, while you work in healthcare?

Asleep-Twist6895 − As a woman, why do other women put up with this? I just don’t get it.

Why do you procreate and stay with these selfish, whiny, immature men? How do you stand to be near them daily?

NotPicklesMaru22 − Tell him he can get up to feed the baby if he would rather.

Should parents divide nights equally, or should responsibilities change depending on each person’s workload? How would you handle this situation? Share your thoughts below!
