Lawyer Demands To Be Called For Every Incoming Fax, Mailroom Worker Takes It Literally And Drives Him Nuts

In the world of corporate communication, faxes were once a lifeline, often leading to frustrating misunderstandings and petty disputes. One law firm employee faced a particularly challenging situation with an opposing counsel who not only played games but also had the audacity to demand notifications for every fax sent.

Instead of complying quietly, this employee decided to turn the tables in a cheeky and clever way that would leave the opposing lawyer regretting his request.

As the story unfolds, we see how one determined employee used a combination of wit and a touch of malicious compliance to respond to the unreasonable demands.

What started as a simple fax communication spiraled into a series of hilarious phone calls that served as a reminder that in the world of law, sometimes the best response is to give people exactly what they ask for. Scroll down to see how this clever tactic played out!

Call you every time I send you a fax? Will do!?

Many years ago, before email took over the corporate environment,

I worked at a large law firm and sent and received faxes for 8 hours a day.

I had five fax machines and two coworkers. We logged every fax.

There was an incoming log and an outgoing log.

And there was the ever important confirmation sheet.

Opposing counsel was the kind of lawyer that gives lawyers a bad name.

Stereotypical j__kass who played stupid lawyer games.

Dropping documents at 5pm on the Friday before a three day weekend.

That kind of petty s__t that adds unnecessary misery to the profession.

My guy comes to the mailroom and says opposing counsel claims

he didn’t receive a fax we said we sent.

I call b__lshit. I sent it myself. The confirmation sheet exists.

Opposing counsel probably lost it. Or his secretary didn’t give it to him.

Whatever. My guy knows I sent the fax.

Opposing counsel wants to be called every time we send him a fax.

He’s accused me of not doing my job and lying

and now he’s creating extra work for me.

Ok, let’s play. What he wanted and expected was for me

to call his secretary and let her know a fax was on the way.

Nope. F__k that. I called his secretary

and told her I was calling for my guy.

She assumed he needed to talk to her boss so she connected me.

Opposing counsel answers expecting some kind of substantive discussion.

Instead he gets the mailroom guy.

I said “I’ve been told to let you know every time I send you a fax.

I’m sending you a fax.” We hang up..

An hour later I call him again. New fax..

Half an hour after that I call again. New fax..

Another hour another call another another fax.

My guy comes to the mailroom with a big smile on his face.

He’s giddy, almost giggling.

He says opposing counsel asked that the calls stop.

He no longer needs to know when faxes are coming.

He’s tired of being interrupted.

Sometimes you get exactly what you ask for.

Faced with betrayal or perceived injustice, many find the temptation of revenge rising to the surface. This sentiment is poignantly illustrated in the story of the legal assistant who faced the frustrating antics of a difficult opposing counsel.

With emotions running high, both parties navigated a landscape filled with pain, frustration, and a yearning for respect. The opposing counsel’s behavior, playing petty games and accusing the assistant of negligence, triggered a visceral response that is all too familiar for many: the need to reclaim a sense of power and fairness.

From a psychological perspective, the assistant’s decision to comply with the request to call every time a fax was sent was a reaction fueled by emotional distress and a quest for validation.

Feeling wronged by the opposing counsel’s accusations, the assistant was driven by the need to assert their competence and confront the injustice of the situation.

This dynamic is evident in the assistant’s actions, as they transformed a frustrating demand into a form of retaliation that ultimately brought a sense of satisfaction.

The satisfaction that arose from the outcome of this story resonates deeply with readers. The assistant’s choice to follow through on the request in a way that caused inconvenience to the opposing counsel serves as a reminder that sometimes, the universe balances itself.

The assistant’s giddiness upon seeing the adversary’s frustration illustrates a shared human experience, finding joy in witnessing justice, however small or humorous it may be.

As one Reddit user aptly noted, “Sometimes you get exactly what you ask for,” highlighting how the assistant’s cleverness turned the tables on the situation.

Expert insights into the emotional dynamics of such stories reveal that revenge, while often viewed negatively, can also serve as a coping mechanism for individuals who feel powerless.

The emotions of anger and resentment are valid responses to being wronged, and they can manifest in creative ways that provide catharsis.

As trauma expert Judith Lewis Herman explains in Trauma and Recovery, “The conflict between the will to deny horrible events and the will to proclaim them aloud is the central dialectic of psychological trauma.”

Her work shows that when people begin acknowledging and giving voice to their experiences, they take the first steps toward reclaiming their identity and moving toward healing.

As we reflect on this narrative, it invites us to ponder our own responses to conflict. How do we navigate our emotions when faced with disrespect or betrayal? Revenge may offer fleeting satisfaction, but fostering open communication and understanding may lead to more constructive resolutions.

These are the responses from Reddit users:

These commenters celebrated the cleverness of the OP’s response, praising the brilliance of malicious compliance in the workplace

NorskGodLoki − And for their billing system they have

to log each call they take to bill their clients.

Thereby racking up the charges to the client who will not be happy

to pay for tons of calls about receiving a fax. Perfect!

literal-hitler − The only better malicious compliance

for faxing is "Keep faxing until we've confirmed with you we've received it.

Hado0301 − As a long time paralegal i can only admire you. Well Done! !

This group expressed their admiration for the OP’s wit, suggesting even more absurd scenarios for fax notifications

erichwanh − "Opposing counsel asked that the calls stop.

He no longer needs to know when faxes are coming.

He’s tired of being interrupted."

"Can we get that in writing? Have him fax it over. We'll call him when we get it"

CoderJoe1 − The fax, the whole fax and nuthin b__t the fax!

Burnaman − This post is PERFECT malicious compliance,

and exactly why I subscribe to this thread.

These Reddit users highlighted the irony of legal gamesmanship, noting how the lawyer’s own demands backfired spectacularly

KTB1962 − I would've continued to call and claim you never got the message,

just like he didn't get that fax.

ibelieveindogs − If the lawyer wants to play lawyer games

and says "call me when you send a fax", then you can him.

Not his assistant, legal aide, office manager.

Him. Because he said "call me".

You'd think a layer would know to use better language

in his instructions if he meant "not me". Good for you!

Campin_Corners − A couple years ago my dads new Dr office wanted his other doctors office

to fax all of his medical records.

He asked are you sure? And they said they needed everything.

We had just moved after he beat cancer the 4th time.

So there was tons. But they said all.

Few hours later the secretary calls and we are in the car

and could hear her screaming at him for clogging up the lines

for hours and causing a mess of things.

He simply replied that earlier

when asked you said all you should’ve been more specific.

She hung up on him. He found a new dr office.

The tale of the fax-loving lawyer and his unfortunate request serves as a reminder that words have power, especially in the legal world.

Do you think the opposing counsel got what he deserved, or did the OP take it too far? How would you navigate a similar situation in a professional setting? Share your thoughts below!
