Man Extends Family Vacation, Misses Girlfriend’s Surgery, Then Calls Her “Dramatic” For Needing Help

Long-planned trips and family time matter, but so do the quiet promises we make at home. When you agree to take time off to care for a partner after surgery, that commitment is more than a calendar note; it’s reassurance during a vulnerable moment.

That’s the heart of this argument. A man booked leave to support his girlfriend through a tonsillectomy and turbinate reduction, then surprised his family with a months-long visit and extended the trip so he’d return after her operation.

Now she faces recovery without the partner who said he would be there, and he thinks she’s overreacting. The situation raises a simple but painful question about priorities, trust, and whether being present when it counts should ever be optional.

A man extends a surprise family visit, missing his girlfriend’s surgery despite promising to be there, and calls her dramatic for being upset

not the actual photo

'AITA for extending my vacation with my family and missing my gf's surgery? I think she's being dramatic?'

I (35M) have been with "Stacey" (33F) for 8 years; neither of us want marriage but we are committed long-term to our relationship.

Stacey gets tonsillitis 3-4/year, and has swollen turbinates meaning she is agony every quarter and has trouble breathing through her nose.

She is having a tonsillectomy and turbinate reduction surgery at the same time (both are done through GA and she'll be there for 24-36 hours)

We got to pick the surgery date to fit around my work schedule. I had a big project coming up and it was due to finish a few days before...

I organised to take the week off work to keep her company, help prep food, etc.

I thought it was the least I could do since she claimed to need someone there.

We recently moved to a new state, so neither of us have family or friends in town.

Project fell through so I booked a flight to surprise my family and would be there for 4.5 weeks; return flight would have me there day after surgery.

Since the trip was a surprise for my family, nobody took time off work and I've barely seen them.

Sister managed to get time off during week 5, so I extended my trip to stay.

Stacey was upset and asked me to come home when originally planned.

I had my tonsils out when I was 8 and I was at school a week later.

I don't think she'll need someone there because it's as simple as taking painkillers and reheating soup.

However, she says that her doctors said she'd need someone with her for at least first 3 days,

and because I knew about the date already that somehow I'm being insensitive.

She said that I should have warned my family to make sure they took time off, but that wouldn't have been a surprise.

My sister says she's being selfish because she's coming between me and my family time, and I'm on the same side.

I googled anecdotes of tonsillectomy recover but I know people often exaggerate online for attention.

Now her mother has called me and (nicely, I'll admit) asked me to come back to look after Stacey since she'll have no one else. AITA?

ETA: Our friends are also divided on this issue.

ETA: full disclosure, it was my brother I was referring to. I changed it to sister to make it a bit anonymous,

but I ended up telling my girlfriend I posted here so it doesn't matter so much anymore

There’s a gap between what partners promise when schedules are set and what actually happens when surgery and recovery arrive.

The OP booked time off to be present for his girlfriend’s tonsillectomy and turbinate reduction, then extended a surprise family visit so he’d miss the days she’s likely to need help. That mismatch, not the surgery itself, is what has friends and family arguing about who’s being unreasonable.

Adult tonsillectomy recovery is materially different from a child’s. Clinically, adults are routinely advised to plan for 10–14 days of recovery, with the first 48–72 hours often the toughest for pain control, hydration and mobility. Many providers specifically note that adults may need more time and support than children do. Mayo Clinic

Practical warning signs, severe throat pain that can worsen around days three to five, fatigue, difficulty eating, and (rare but important) risk of bleeding, mean a patient needs monitoring and help with medications, fluids and food. Cleveland Clinic

Medical teams routinely tell adult patients: arrange a ride home and plan for someone to help at least the first 48–72 hours, a period when swallowing, pain control and simple self-care are hardest.

Post-op guidance from university health systems and ENT clinics advises rest at home initially and limited activity for up to two weeks. University of Mississippi Medical Center

Beyond the clinical facts, there’s a well-documented psychosocial element: social support from an intimate partner measurably affects recovery.

Research going back decades shows that spousal support can reduce preoperative anxiety, improve pain management and speed functional recovery after surgery; modern reviews continue to find social support buffers psychological stress and aids convalescence.

So how should this specific conflict be read? Objectively, the girlfriend asked for support that clinicians commonly recommend; the OP agreed; then he extended a long family trip that left her without the person she expected.

That sequence plausibly looks like a broken commitment to someone vulnerable in a new town with no local help. Subjectively, the OP underestimates adult recovery from combined airway surgery and values the surprise family visit, creating competing obligations.

Practical advice for both parties: the OP should consider returning for at least the first 48–72 hours or arrange an equally capable caregiver, confirm medication/feeding plans with the surgeon, and communicate honestly with family (surprises are not mandatory).

The girlfriend should request specific, foreseeable help (med schedule, meals, transport) and document the surgeon’s recommendations in writing so plans aren’t ambiguous.

See what others had to share with OP:

These Redditors say OP reneged on a promise and trivialized major adult surgery

TimeForCaffeine − YTA- let me count the ways

1. “Surprising” your family was more important than actually spending time and making plans with them;

2. Specifically telling your SO you would be back in time and changing last minute to insure she will be alone and have no time to see if anyone else...

3. Making a commitment to help her and then blaming her for coming between you and your family;

4. Thinking children healing from surgery is the same as an adult (spoiler alert, it isn’t.

It’s much harder for adults and I guarantee you weren’t taking care of yourself at the age of 8 like you think she should);

5. Her doctor is specifically saying she needs somebody to help her for three days and you think she’s being dramatic.

You suck, be better. Edited to add: thank you for all the awards.

AMerrickanGirl − YTA. A tonsillectomy plus turbinate reduction is major surgery for an adult.

You’re visiting your family for FOUR WEEKS and can’t come back a couple of days early to take care of your life partner in her time of great need?

And your family thinks SHE is selfish? This is so uncaring. I’ll bet your SO is seriously questioning whether you even love her.

MaddyKet − YTA STACEY, IF YOU EVER SEE THIS. .DUMP HIM. Holy crap that’s a lot of awards! Thanks like minded peoples.

AthleticQueer − YTA, she gave you advance notice, you committed to this. The fact that you didn't see any of your family isn't her fault.

If you had been upfront about staying longer before the procedure and even offered to help find someone to come stay, it might have been better.

It's simply respecting your commitment you made to your partner during something that's scary for them

This group stresses adult recovery is brutal and calls OP selfish and uncaring

WineOrDeath − YTA. Gods, YTA! You can't equate the surgery of an 8 year old with a grown adult! Kids bounce back very fast.

Plus you had mommy and daddy to take care of you. Her doctor had said she needs assistance for 3 days. What about this do you not understand?

It is amazing she has put up with you for this long when you place so much value of your family over the person you are in a LT relationship...

loloannd − YTA. A huge one. Getting a tonsillectomy as an adult is WAY WORSE than as a kid.

You specifically took time off so you could be with her and you *completely ditched* her for weeks.

She asked you to be there, you agreed, and now you’ve reneged on that agreement.

How crushing for her: Also, I just have to say, having someone come in to town for 5 weeks

and expect me to drop things and hang out or work out my schedule to accommodate them is rude and inconvenient.

When people I haven’t seen in a while want to visit, please tell me so I can take time off to make the most of it!!

You say you don’t want marriage, but you’re definitely not committed.

You have abandoned Stacey during a time when she will be vulnerable and in pain in a place where she has no friends and family. Shame on you, OP.

CompetitiveStick6239 − YTA. That surgery is WAY harsher as an adult than a kid. You already promised to be there for her. And 5 weeks with family?!

My god cut the cord much? Even if they all have full time jobs, you have seen them just fine. Your girlfriend deserves way better.

As a kid you were cared for and it is proven this surgery is way harder on an adult.

How you even think your behaviour is normal is mind-boggling. Your family sucks too.

These commenters urge the GF to rethink the relationship and consider dumping OP

Similar_Pineapple418 − YTA What is wrong with you? Your girlfriend is in pain, and she delayed her surgery to suit your work schedule.

You knew the surgery date when you booked your trip, it’s not like she intentionally scheduled it to overlap your trip.

You are being incredibly self involved and I hope your gf takes this opportunity to rethink if you care enough about her to justify staying in your relationship

Doggers1968 − YTA. You knew this was happening and you ditched her. FWIW: One of my coworkers just had the exact same surgery and it was 2 weeks of recovery.

Her husband took a week off work to be there for her, and it was a good thing he did, because she felt absolutely awful for about five days afterwards.

I kind of hope your girlfriends dumps you.

TyrannasaurusRecked − YTA. You committed to being there for her, then bailed. Your gf is right about giving the family a heads up so they'd be around.

But you'd rather have the dramatic effect. Me--I'd kick you to the curb after this, but your gf may be nicer than I am.

If she does keep you around, try not to be such a schmuck.

So, what do you think? Was OP simply making the most of a trip with family, or did he cross the line and betray a partner in need?
