Man Frustrated as Wealthy Parents Save Millions but Won’t Help During His Medical Struggles

in Social Issues

Money can become complicated when family, security, and old fears are all tied together.

Even loving parents with significant savings may struggle to spend or share their wealth if their past experiences shaped how they view financial safety.

The original poster (OP) says their parents are in their 80s and have built a net worth of around $7 million.

They have always been generous in important ways, including paying for education, supporting family traditions, and sharing their vacation home.

However, OP says their parents are extremely hesitant to spend money because they grew up poor and fear losing everything again.

Now, with unexpected medical expenses affecting OP’s family, they find themselves wishing their parents would provide some help while it could still make a meaningful difference.

Read on to see why OP feels conflicted despite understanding where their parents’ mindset comes from.

Man struggles with his wealthy parents’ fear of spending as he faces rising medical bills

not the actual photo

'My parents have 7 million dollars and won't help me financially?'

I know it’s not my money, so nobody needs to remind me of that. I’m in my

40s and my parents are in their 80s.

Twice a year I go to meetings with their bankers. At the last one, they had

about $7 million in net worth; $1 million in real estate and $6 million in stocks.

My parents paid for college for me and my siblings. They go to all the

grandkids sporting events, and we can use their vacation home anytime.

We have a great relationship. Theyre good people.. They just will not spend money.

They both grew up dirt poor, and my dad has said he’s afraid something will

happen and he’ll end up with nothing again. I understand where that fear

comes from, but realistically, they are not going to end up homeless in

their 80s with $7 million.

Because of a weird insurance issue, my wife was diagnosed with something

and we have a lot of medical bills coming.

At these estate meetings, their bankers talk about annual gifts, and their

attorney talks about stock, taxes, and step-up in basis. But my parents

don’t want to sell stock because they hate paying capital gains taxes. In

their minds, paying taxes somehow starts the road to losing everything.

I know that fear comes from how they grew up and what they saw their

own parents go through. Im just tired of hearing how rich parents buy their

kids houses and pay for everything. Ive had a great life and my parents

have done a lot for us...

I just wish they would take some of the money they already plan to leave

me and give me some now, when it would make a much bigger difference.

One of the hardest emotions in families is wanting help from someone who has the ability to give it, but choosing not to.

It can create a complicated mix of gratitude, frustration, and even guilt because the person asking often knows they are not truly being denied out of cruelty.

In this situation, OP is not describing parents who are neglectful or uncaring.

In fact, the opposite seems true.

They paid for education, show up for their grandchildren, share their vacation home, and have built a loving relationship with their family.

The emotional conflict comes from a mismatch between financial security and emotional security.

OP sees millions of dollars sitting untouched while facing unexpected medical expenses, creating the feeling that resources exist but are unavailable when they matter most.

A different perspective is that OP’s parents are not necessarily protecting money because they value wealth more than their children.

Their behavior appears connected to scarcity trauma.

People who grow up in poverty often develop survival habits that remain even after circumstances change.

To someone who once experienced financial instability, having a large amount of savings may not feel like luxury; it may feel like protection against a disaster they still emotionally expect.

This is where generational differences often appear.

Younger generations may view wealth as something that can improve family life in the present, especially during moments of crisis.

Older generations who experienced hardship may view money as a shield that must never be lowered.

Both perspectives come from different fears: one fears missing an opportunity to help, while the other fears losing the safety they spent decades building.

This helps explain why OP’s parents may struggle to see their finances the way others do.

From an outside perspective, $7 million appears more than enough to provide support.

But emotionally, they may still feel like the people who once had nothing and could lose everything overnight.

Their fear is not based purely on numbers; it is based on memories.

At the same time, OP’s feelings are understandable.

Wanting support during a medical crisis does not erase gratitude for everything parents have already done.

It is natural to wonder whether inherited wealth would be more meaningful if it helped loved ones during difficult years rather than only arriving later.

The challenge may be accepting that generosity cannot be forced, even when the ability to give is obvious.

OP’s parents have the right to manage their money according to their values, while OP has the right to feel disappointed.

Sometimes the hardest family conflicts are not caused by a lack of love, but by different ideas about what love should look like.

Check out how the community responded:

These commenters questioned missing details and felt the story lacked important context

dancinhorse99 − Have you directly asked for help?

FamiliarRadio9275 − Lowkey I feel like there is two sides the story

CommonSense07 − If I had to guess, even in your 40s your parents are

trying to teach you some financial lessons which is why they are set up the

way they are. Times are different and it's tough right now, but $1500 saved

and $20k due in medical debts in your 40s makes me question your overall situation.

I don't know you and I'm not judging, but I feel like there might be more

information that we don't know. Hopefully some of that wealth gets left to

you, but until then just do your best to improve your situation without

expecting anything from your parents.

These commenters argued that OP ignored the significant support already received from parents

BoogerPicker2020 − Maybe its time to accept that your parents value tax

avoidance and wealth preservation more than easing your hardship. Its ok

to feel frustrated, but the reality is, they've already paid for your education

and rent, they're just choosing themselves now. I can only suggest you

contact whomever you owe that atrocious insurance bill too and make a payment plan.

UnfortunatePoorSoul − I’m not gonna rag on you the way some people are,

but paying for your college is kind of a pretty big leap from not giving you a

dime. Your parents may not have been as generous as you’d have

liked/hoped, but it sounds like they gave you a LOT more than what many

people get from their’s.

Angelwearsblack89 − I'm gonna try to explain in a nice way why you're

getting the reaction you are. 1. You framed this whole thing initially like

your parents don't give you a dime. Based on your other comments, this isn't true at all.

Your parents have helped quite a bit and set you up quite nicely and still

offer to watch your children and a second home 2. Since it seems you grew

up around money so you probably don't understand why this post seems

out of touch. The problems you're dealing with while unfortunate, are not unique.

The vast majority of us deal with things like medical debt. The difference is

most of us went through college and the start of our adulthood without

financial help at all. You have a huge advantage in life in comparison to

most of those in the US and you're complaining that your parents aren't doing enough.

Also most of us don't have an inheritance waiting for us in the future. For

most of us it's an endless cycle of living paycheck to paycheck with no

change in sight. I think there is a lot of privilege here you're overlooking.

So yeah, when people see someone who has had a lot more handed to

them than the average person and starts complaining, it gets a reaction out

of people. You said you're tired of people acting like rich gets things like

houses and then admit your parents paid for your housing in college and

have a second home accessible to you whenever.

You were pretty deceptive in how you framed your post. And it's reddit. If

you have a take people are gonna give you their feedback regardless if you want it or not.

ledzeppelin95 − Didnt give you a dime, but paid for your college and give

you unrestricted access to their vacation home. You sound out of touch,

entitled, and very ungrateful.

These commenters criticized OP as entitled for expecting more financial assistance

Baleygr_2124 − So you had every advantage growing up, bachelors and

masters fully paid for, living expenses paid for, free childcare, and yet

somehow in your 40's you still can't succeed. You're 100% leaving

something out, how can you possibly have health insurance and still owe

over $20k?

"I'm getting real sick of people talking about how Rich parents buy their

kids everything and buy their kids houses and how life is unfair. Shut the

f\\\\\\ with that because my parents don't give me a dime. " are you

serious? You had more handed to you than almost every single person in

this country.

They set you up and now you're complaining about people pointing out

that you were raised with a silver spoon in your mouth bc as a fully grown

old man they won't give you even more money. Is it their fault you didn't

invest in an HSA? What financial limitations did you have growing up that

prevented you from being successful right now?

Did you actually choose the best health insurance you could've or did you

skimp out to save some money and now your deductible is huge? The

entitlement here is crazy.

Yeah as a 40 something year old man, your parents won't give you money,

but they sure gave you plenty of it at a time where most people have to

put themselves neck deep in debt to get the education you did, and they

managed. Your head start amounted to nothing

Traditional-Tune-975 − There are two sides to every story. What type of son

have you been?

Food-Wine − Your parents have funded so much of your life and you’re still

complaining it’s not enough. Yikes.

surfcitysurfergirl − Wow entitled much? ! You sound like a terrible adult

child. Not your money.

Money can be a complicated thing, especially when it is tied to fear, childhood experiences, and family history.

OP clearly understands that their parents are generous in many ways, but it is still difficult watching resources sit untouched while a medical crisis creates real stress.

Their parents’ fear of losing everything makes sense given where they came from, but from OP’s perspective, a little help now would mean far more than an inheritance decades later.

Do you think parents with significant savings should share more while their children are struggling, or is it fair for them to hold onto their money for their own security? Share your thoughts below!
