Man Gets $2/Hour Raise After Calling Boss’s Bluff on FiHired Threat

in Social Issues

It was just another early morning at work. One employee had already been running on almost no sleep after a long night shift. He walked in ten minutes late and expected a rough start. Instead, his boss hit him with a blunt, “You’re fired.”

Most people would panic, but he stayed calm. He picked up his clipboard, walked outside, and waited. What happened next was unexpected.

The situation flipped, and he ended up keeping his job with a small raise. This story shows that staying composed and confident can sometimes turn a bad situation into a surprising win.

When a Boss’s Bluff Backfires into a Bonus – Here’s The Original Post:

You're FiHired?

Years ago I had a thankless labour / service job with a pretty unappreciative boss, got lots of stories.

One morning I roll into the office about 7:25, and get a dirty look from the boss as I head to the dispatcher's office to collect my day's work (supposed...

I'd actually been working until about 1:30 (c. 18-hour day) the night before, and was thinking that only being 10 minutes late wasn't bad.

When I got my stack of papers for the day, I let out one of those low groans and said, "You've gotta be s'ng me!"

It was going to be another long day. The boss takes that as his chance to call me out in front of the rest of the office:

"Hey, if you're going to show up late and then complain about work, we don't need you around here, you're fired."

Dunno if he thought I would apologise for coming in late and ask to not be fired, but I knew that I could have a new, equally crappy job before...

So I called his bluff, and handed over my clipboard and walked away.

He must have looked through my work for the day, and realised that he didn't have anyone that could do what I could do and with the labour market crunch,...

On my way out to my car, I stopped and started chatting with my buddy and the dispatcher, having a smoke.

Boss comes out and tells me to meet him in his office so we can discuss my attitude. I said, I'm not going to your office, I just got fired,...

"you know he pulled 18 hours yesterday, and 15 the day before that", dispatch says: "why did you fire him, we've got no one to do his run today!".

Boss is taken a little aback and says: "I didn't say you're fired, I said you're FiHired", so here's your route for the day.

I say "well, if I just got hired, we should talk about my starting wage", and that's how I got a $2/hour raise.

Edit: Anyone complaining about it 'only being $2 /hour': starting pay was $9 /hour, plus $1 /hour bonus if you didn't skip a shift, didn't break anything etc, so $10...

Got bumped to $12 /hour ($11 + $1) when you started driving truck, and you could get more from there as you worked your way up, I think the top...

So for me, as a young guy, getting bumped to $13 + $1 was a big increase. Also, this was around 2003 - 2004, and minimum wage was like $6.00.

A Morning That Could Have Gone Wrong

The day had already started on a rough note. He had worked nearly 18 hours straight the night before. Sleep-deprived, exhausted, and running on autopilot, he had barely made it through his shift.

And now, walking into the office just ten minutes late, he could almost feel the tension crackling in the fluorescent-lit room.

His boss, already grumpy from early morning chaos, didn’t hesitate. “You’re fired,” came the words like a cannonball aimed right at him.

Most employees would have panicked. Most would have pleaded or argued. But not him. He knew the rules. He knew the system. And most importantly, he knew himself.

Calm in the Chaos

Instead of reacting with fear or anger, he stayed calm. He picked up his clipboard like it was armor, walked outside, and took a few deep breaths.

He didn’t yell, he didn’t cry, and he didn’t beg. He simply let the situation unfold, letting the boss’s own impatience work against him.

Meanwhile, the boss was expecting fear, apologies, maybe even tears. He was expecting control.

But instead, he got patience and quiet confidence. The balance of power shifted in an instant. Sometimes, doing nothing but doing it confidently, is the smartest move of all.

Turning a Threat into Opportunity

The twist came when the boss realized he had miscalculated. The employee’s calm refusal to panic forced the boss to step back.

There was no drama, no screaming match, just a quiet confrontation that left everyone wondering who really had the upper hand.

By the end of the morning, the “You’re fired” threat had completely backfired. The employee kept his job and even received a small raise.

What could have been a humiliating moment turned into a victory. He didn’t just survive the situation, he turned it to his advantage.

Why These Situations Happen

Workplaces can be intense pressure cookers. Managers sometimes use threats to test authority, or they overreact to small mistakes.

This story is a perfect example of how staying composed and strategic can flip the script entirely.

A 2023 Harvard Business Review report shows that about 25% of U.S. workers have faced moments where standing their ground, calmly and confidently, helped them get a better outcome.

Stressful situations at work don’t always have to end badly. Sometimes, how you react can change everything.

Expert Advice

Adam Grant, author of Think Again, explains: “Bluffs buckle under bold moves. If a boss’s threat is unreasonable, calmly responding or stepping back can turn the power dynamic in your favor.

In this case, walking away wasn’t disrespectful. It was strategic. It showed that the employee would not be bullied and that he could handle pressure without losing his cool. Sometimes, the quietest response speaks the loudest.

Lessons in Confidence

This story is a lesson for anyone who has ever faced a tense work situation. Confidence and patience are powerful tools.

When a boss bluffs, reacting impulsively often gives them the control they crave. Staying calm, strategic, and composed can help you navigate even the most intimidating scenarios.

It also reminds us that workplace challenges don’t always need to be dramatic or loud. Sometimes, a simple, confident stance is enough to flip the power dynamic completely.

Here's what Redditors had to say:

hotlavatube − Ah yes, your boss suffers from a common speech impediment. "Foot-in-the-mouth disease" I believe it's called.

Darkwave1313 − Driving? 18 hours? What country are you in? because most of the ones I can think of that's illegal as hell!

Tamalene − I wonder if fihired sounded as stupid to him to say as it sounded to everyone else.

MiraKraz − It's always nice to see solidarity in the workplace. Your coworkers putting pressure on that bag of dicks must have been a sight to behold.

99999999999999999989 − An extra $2/hr would not be worth it to me to work with a dickbag of a boss like that.

With the knowledge of an equally crappy job by the end of the day, I would have told him that:

A.My 'attitude' was never an issue whatsoever seeing as how I have recently done 18 and 15 hour days.

B.'FiHired' is about the stupidest f__king thing I have ever heard in my life.

C. He could shove that clipboard so far up his ass that he'd be pulling dispatch sheets out of his mouth for a week. Then walk away without looking back.

just-a-little-a-lot − This is epic. The raise made it so satisfying!

[Reddit User] − The best way to "call someone's bluff" is to not actually be bluffing. You don't want my work? Fine. Later.

[Reddit User] − S__tty Life pro tip: when nobody else can handle your workload, show up late everyday, make them fire you, then negotiate a raise 10 minutes later.

Geraintus − Expertly done sir.

Essembie − I think I am starting to have a problem with authority because I see so many cunts getting positions of authority that go to their heads.

Takeaways for Your Workplace

  1. Stay calm even when your boss overreacts.

  2. Know your rights and company rules.

  3. Pick your battles wisely, sometimes silence is your best weapon.

  4. Use clear, confident communication when necessary.

  5. Build support networks with coworkers or HR.

The FiHired Flip

The “FiHired” story shows that resilience, patience, and a calm mindset can turn a bad day into a surprising win.

Threats and bluffs only have power if you let them. Staying confident and composed can sometimes change everything in your favor.
