Agatha started out as one of Vision and Wanda’s neighbors in WandaVision. But the Scarlet Witch soon found out that she was not who everyone thought she was. The character, essayed by Kathryn Hahn, was in reality the witch Agatha Harkness, a powerful sorceress in Marvel Comics.
Originally set to release in late 2024 with Kathryn Hahn reprising her role as the enigmatic Agatha Harkness, who pretended to be Wanda’s nosy neighbor to steal her power, the show has been in the limelight for its frequent renamings.
While Agatha has seemingly met her end, getting trapped inside Wanda’s world at the end of WandaVision, Marvel writers seem to have another plan for the character. Hence, the decision to come out with a spin-off, initially called Agatha: House of Harkness, a playful nod to the character’s name that resonates with Marvel fans.
Then, the series was renamed Agatha: Coven of Chaos in July 2022. This name was shortly followed by Agatha: Darkhold Diaries, which already received some backlash from fans, and most recently, it has been changed to Agatha: The Lying Witch with Great Wardrobe, an obvious parody of The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.
The first two names for the Agatha spinoff were met with positive reactions from fans, as they all have a nice ring to them. However, the backlash rose from the third title change, Darkhold Diaries, which fans believed was a massive downgrade from the first two. But Marvel didn’t stop there.
It seems that Marvel fans can’t seem to wrap their head around these constant changes. From”It’s gotta be a joke” to “How are they getting worse,” the reactions so far aren’t very favorable for Marvel’s new show.
However, only minutes after they made their initial post, Marvel Studios quickly deleted it without explaining anything, making fans wonder if they really did change Agatha’s title again or not.
There is a possibility that this was a genuine mistake on Marvel’s part and this post wasn’t supposed to go out today. However, mistakes like that are rare.
There’s also a high chance that the Agatha: The Lying Witch with Great Wardrobe title was meant to be a joke, capitalizing the speculation around the show’s title. Since fans are already pretty confused about the consecutive name changes, Marvel decided to take the joke to another level by teasing a new name for the TV series, which can also serve as a marketing strategy.
There’s also a widespread theory on the Internet that all the name changes before for the Agatha TV show are just the names of the episodes, not the names of the series. This theory also suggests that the real name of the series is just simply Agatha. It might seem crazy at first, but after all the sudden title changes in the past, we might as well wonder if this is all just a marketing stunt pulled by Marvel Studios.
Some even believe that Marvel will make as if this strategy is Agatha’s own doing, as the witch is known for her breaking-the-fourth-wall ability in WandaVision.
No matter if Agatha: The Lying Witch with Great Wardrobe is the real title of the show or not, we’ll find out soon enough when the series hits Disney+ this Fall.
