Mom Ignores Warning, Invites Thieving Daughter For Thanksgiving, Astoundingly Loses Valuables

A 29-year-old Redditor banned her troubled 37-year-old sister, known for thieving alongside her shady husband and kids, from her home. When her mom pushed for a warm Thanksgiving reunion, the plan backfired spectacularly. Silverware and jewelry vanished, leaving a trail of regret and “I told you so.”

The AITA subreddit lit up with this tale of family chaos, where good intentions met harsh truths. Mom’s hope for harmony crumbled under the weight of her sister’s sticky-fingered crew, sparking debates over trust and boundaries that have Reddit buzzing.

Mom invites sticky-fingered daughter for Thanksgiving, then surprisingly loses her valuables. Who would have thought?!

'AITA for laughing and asking my mom what she expected to happen when she had my thief sister and her scumbag family over for Thanksgiving?'

My (F29) sister (37) is a drug addict and a thief. She has not gone to jail because she mostly steals from family and friends.

Her husband is also a dirtbag and their two kids are headed the same way.

I will not allow them in my house. I will only meet with them in public.

I always bring just enough cash to pay my bill of we eat together and don't bring anything else.

I don't know why she is this way. Both my brother (33) and myself have turned out okay.

We have educations and careers. We have stable relationships. We are reasonably well behaved adults and our kids are a pretty good bunch.

My sister just never grew up. She hated rules. She hated that my parents got her to watch me when I was young.

She moved out when she was 18, took her education savings account and spent it traveling around.

I was going to host Thanksgiving this year and my mom mentioned that my sister and her family would be in town.

They have not visited for four years. She asked me to include them. HARD NO. I said that wasn't going to happen.

So my mom said she wanted her whole family together so her and my dad would host.

Well she just called me. A bunch of stuff is missing from her house. Jewelry, sports memorabilia, knick knacks. Stuff that would be easy to sell on eBay. Or pawn.

I snorted and asked her if she remembered why I do not allow my sister in my house.

She said that when I allowed her to stay with me she stole cash from me and her kids stole my stepson's video game.

I asked her why she thought they wouldn't steal from her. She said that I'm being cruel to rub it in when all she wanted was family time.

Family is all about loving and caring. But if someone turns out to be a black sheep, having to put up with them could be burdensome.

This Redditor’s tale of her thieving sister and her mom’s blind optimism is a classic case of hope clashing with reality. The 29-year-old woman set firm boundaries, refusing to host her sister’s family due to their history of stealing.

But when her parents opened their home for Thanksgiving, they got a crash course in why some doors should stay locked.

The Redditor’s sister, at 37, has a long rap sheet of pilfering from loved ones, fueled by addiction and a disregard for rules since her teens.

Her husband and kids seem to follow suit, creating a family dynamic that’s less “heartwarming” and more “hide your valuables.”

The Redditor’s refusal to host wasn’t just about protecting her stuff, it was about self-preservation.

As psychologist Dr. John Gottman notes in a 2019 Psychology Today article, “Boundaries are crucial for healthy relationships, especially when trust has been repeatedly broken”.

This rings true here: the sister’s unchecked behavior has eroded trust, leaving the Redditor to prioritize her own peace.

On the flip side, the mom’s desire for a united family is understandable but dangerously naive. Family dynamics often hinge on hope, especially for parents who cling to the idea of redemption.

A 2021 Pew Research study found that 68% of parents feel intense pressure to maintain family unity, even in strained relationships.

The mom’s choice to host reflects this, but ignoring her daughter’s history was a gamble that backfired. The missing jewelry and knickknacks were a loud reminder of why boundaries exist.

So, why does the sister keep stealing? Addiction often rewires priorities, making quick cash (via pawnable goods) more appealing than family ties.

The Redditor’s quip about her mom’s expectations wasn’t kind, but it was honest.

Dr. Gabor Maté, in his book In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts, explains, “Addiction can trap families in cycles of enabling and denial”.

The mom’s refusal to set firm limits may stem from guilt or love, but it’s enabling the cycle to continue.

What’s the fix? Neutral ground, like a restaurant or park, could allow family time without risking theft. The Redditor’s strategy of meeting in public with minimal cash is a solid start.

For the mom, accepting her daughter’s reality could be the best solution for now, as it pave the way for safer connections.

Here’s what the community had to contribute:

People assert the mother’s denial enabled the sister’s thievery, justifying the OP’s stance.

OffKira − NTA. Your sister is 37 with what seems like a long history of thievery,

and your mother wanted you to bear that burden (by asking you, the host, to have them over),

then was shocked and surprised that the known thieves... stole her stuff! My my, who could've seen it coming.

Given your sister's age, Imma guess your mom isn't a naive teenager and absolutely should know better.

Her wanting to see her daughter, to have a big family get together doesn't mean she gets to not have her mistakes pointed out.

What would she have said if you had caved and your sister had stolen from you? "Oh no please don't call the cops, oh nooo".

I will go on a limb and infer that your mother's behavior has something to do with how your sister turned out.

CapsFan1066 − NTA. This reminded me of the "The Scorpion and the Frog" fable.

It seems that your sister's family actions have been well-established and known.

Your parents seemed to be the frog in the fable. It's a hard lesson to learn when having good intentions of wanting family together.

Maybe it's harsh to say at the time, but ultimately it was the truth.

[Reddit User] − Schadenfreude and karma, my favourite combo.

Your mother is clearly still in denial about what kind of child she raised. Let's hope this is the wake-up call she needs.

Probably won't make a pennyworth of difference thought. NTA.

Some comments suggest practical measures to prevent theft while maintaining family contact.

Snackinpenguin − NTA. She’s not thinking outside of the box on family time.

Meeting at restaurants, coffee shops, parks (if the weather is good) would all be great for family time without letting them into her home.

Use_this_1 − NTA - Your parents either need to make them empty their bags and pockets before they leave or just stop letting them in their home.

Many acknowledge the mother’s pain but criticize her refusal to accept reality.

KronkLaSworda − It's always an AH move to say "I told you so".

specially when the other person had something really bad happen like a daughter steal from their parent. That's a hard wound to take.

However, I'm giving you a pass. Your parents knew your sister and her husband are thieves and drug addicts.

They just gave them s__t they can pawn for more drugs. NTA Don't give a drunk a drink or a gambler money.

Outrageous_Fig_7928 − NTA. That being said you appear to be enjoying the schadenfreude a bit much.

I can't imagine what it is like for a parent to accept that their child is a drug addict, thief, etc.

They love unconditionally and were trying to do what they thought in their mind was right.

Clearly your sister has no respect for any of her siblings or parents and hopefully you can gently reinforce that with your family without being cruel about it.

ncslazar7 − NTA. You weren't kind about it, but she called you looking for sympathy when she was willingly ignorant to your sisters issues.

You don't need to comfort predictably disappointing circumstances.

Meanwhile others view the sister’s actions as predictable and the mother’s expectations as delusional.

Feverrunsaway − Had a cousin like this. Parents finally pressed charges.

ghrutnsn − "She said that I'm being cruel to rub it in when all she wanted was family time." "You're so mean for not indulging my delusion."

NTA. If wishes were fishes...

This Thanksgiving tale is a wild reminder that family love can sometimes blind us to red flags the size of a turkey platter.

The Redditor’s blunt “I told you so” might’ve stung, but her boundaries held firm against a predictable heist.

Was she too harsh on her mom, or was her honesty a necessary wake-up call?

How would you juggle family loyalty when trust is on the chopping block? Share your spicy takes!
