Mom Shields Deaf Son From Toxic Bullying By Peers And Adults In His Own Community

A devoted mother’s world cracked when she uncovered vicious mockery aimed at her 11-year-old Deaf son, who proudly relies on cochlear implants to navigate sound. The boy, free to choose when he wears his devices at home, abruptly hid them during friendly video chats, only for her to learn that certain parents were signing cruel jabs, insisting he wasn’t “truly Deaf” anymore, even startling him with loud noises while others stayed silent and unaware.

The torment peaked in a gut-wrenching session filled with name-calling from both kids and grown-ups, crushing the child’s spirit and sparking doubts about his identity. She swiftly severed those ties to safeguard his heart, yet faced sharp criticism from outsiders accusing her of cutting him off from vital shared bonds.

A mother protected her Deaf son from bullying by friends’ parents over his cochlear implants.

Not the actual photo.

'AITA for not letting my son video chat with his Deaf friends because of their parents?'

I 36F have two kids A 12F and B 11M. B is Deaf and has cochlear implants.

Both kids have been spending a lot of time video chatting with friends and doing online games

which was fine until I started noticing B was refusing to wear his CIs during this time, which I would normally be fine with.

B knows that with the exception of school it is 100% up to him when he uses his aids

and when he goes sound free, our whole family uses ASL as well so there's no communication gap.

The problem started when I asked B why he had stopped wearing his CIs during his video chats, if there was an issue with them I like to get it...

B said that a few if his friends parents were signing that he's not Deaf for having CIs,

one dad started signing his name letter with the sign for stupid another parent started banging pots behind her kid

and laughed when my son reacted because since no one else was hearing or using an aid no one else reacted.

I talked to B for a long time about how this made him feel and he is really upset,

my kid loves his CIs but doesn't want to lose friends over them, it ended with my kid crying and saying he hates being Deaf.

I tried getting ahold of the parents and explaining how much this was bothering my kid and was told it's my fault for getting him CIs.

Yesterday I walked into the den where our computers are set up and B was full on in tears signing stop

while his friends and the two parents were mocking him and signing stupid and CI cry baby.

Apparently a few of the parents I talked to told their kids B is a big baby.

I turned off the computer and put my foot down, these people are toxic and he isn't to play with or chat with them again unless they apologize and their...

B isn't even that upset by it but I have had other parents say I'm TA for trying to cut my son off from his "true community".

I talked to a few friends and fam and the vote is split about 50/50 so I thought I'd come here and see what reddit thought. So AITA?

The Reddit user’s son connected with other Deaf children through video chats, using sign language to bond. Everything seemed wholesome until the mom noticed her son ditching his beloved cochlear implants during these sessions.

Probing gently, she uncovered that certain parents were criticizing his choice to use implants, even mocking him behind his back, or worse, right in front of him. One incident involved banging pots to startle him, laughing when he reacted while others didn’t. It culminated in a tearful scene where adults and kids alike piled on, calling him names via signs.

Heartbroken, the mom confronted the parents, only to be dismissed. She ultimately banned further contact, prioritizing her son’s emotional well-being. He’s handling it okay, but some critics argue she’s denying him connections to his “true community.”

This situation spotlights the tricky balance parents face: fostering independence while safeguarding against harm. The mom’s instinct to intervene stems from witnessing real distress—her child crying and expressing self-doubt. On the flip side, those opposing her decision worry about limiting access to peers who share similar life experiences, fearing isolation in a world that can already feel challenging.

Yet, when interactions involve adults encouraging mockery of a child’s medical choices, it crosses into unhealthy territory. Motivations here seem rooted in strongly held beliefs about deafness and technology, but directing that at an 11-year-old raises red flags.

Broadening out, this touches on larger dynamics in family and community relationships, especially around differing views on disability and identity. Cochlear implants have sparked debates for decades, with some seeing them as helpful tools and others as conflicting with cultural pride in sign language and Deaf experiences.

According to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), as of recent estimates, roughly 65,000 cochlear implants have been placed in children in the United States, offering many access to sound during key developmental years.

Irene W. Leigh, a psychologist and professor emerita at Gallaudet University, has noted in discussions on evolving perspectives: “There are many ways of being deaf,” reflecting a shift toward inclusivity where implant users can still embrace varied identities.

Her comment highlights relevance here. True supportive communities uplift rather than exclude based on personal choices like using implants.

No one deserves bullying, especially kids navigating their world. Experts emphasize open communication and seeking positive connections. Parents might explore diverse groups, perhaps mixing online and in-person options, or programs that welcome different approaches to communication.

Neutral advice: focus on environments that build confidence, teach resilience against negativity, and encourage healthy friendships.

See what others had to share with OP:

Some people express outrage at adults bullying or mocking a child for wearing cochlear implants or hearing aids.

duchessofcheezit − NTA. Mother of a kid with hearing loss here. This makes me see red. What the heck is wrong with these people?

Is there a way for him to open up his community a bit? I agree that these people are toxic.

Ottermatic − Wow. From the title I was fully ready to call you out on controlling your kid’s friends, but holy hell.

In this case, you’re absolutely NTA. That’s just terrible what they’ve been saying to him.

Having a disability is hard enough, making fun of someone because of their hearing aids is total BS.

S__ew those people, y’all don’t need that kind of toxicity in your lives.

reeserodgers59 − 2 adults are mocking an 11 child? HELL WITH THAT! NTA

AlwaysKirby − NTA wow, what monsters. Who makes fun of a child? This might sound petty but you should name and shame them.

If you are part of any online communities or go to the same school, let people know about what they’re doing.

I wouldn’t want any other parents or their kids to fall into the same situation.

Some people criticize gatekeeping or insularity within parts of the deaf community toward those using CIs.

King-Brosidon − NTA. His “true” community wouldn’t mock him for doing what he can to hear to the best of his ability to better his own life.

It is absolutely the best move to keep them out of his life.

I_Spot_Assholes − They were gatekeeping deafness against a child? NTA

Stunning-General − There's a recent Netflix reality show called Deaf U (not a children's show),

and some of the cast commented that the deaf community can be extraordinarily insular,

especially when people come from backgrounds where deafness is generational.

The students said they often felt othered, less than and excluded when they couldn't sign rapidly, used hearing aids or had partial deafness.

It's sad and shocking that this is happening to your child and that he's being bullied by adults no less for his disability.

You're doing the right thing to protect your son from these people.

A person's true community would never shun them or belittle them. NTA and don't listen to ignorant idiots.

Some people support protecting the child by cutting contact and suggest finding better deaf role models.

HopelessSemantic − NTA. These parents are bullying your child and encouraging their own children to do so as well.

I would not allow him to talk to them again even if they do apologize. I do think it is a good idea for him

to have other people who are deaf in his social circle, but there are plenty of people out there who are deaf that aren't jerks.

snow_whiteish − NTA, being deaf isn’t an excuse for being a bully.

[Reddit User] − Wait what? I might be ignorant here but what on earth is wrong with wearing CIs?

They help your kid to listen - why is that stupid? NTA though. What kind of adult bullies a kid

EDIT: I appreciate everyone who has told me the reasonings behind this - I never knew this was the case.

This Reddit saga reminds us how quickly supportive circles can sour when adults let biases overshadow kids’ feelings. The mom’s choice to hit pause on toxic chats feels like a protective hug in action: shielding her son from mockery that no child should endure.

Do you think stepping in decisively was the right call to preserve his self-esteem, or could bridging dialogues have mended things? How would you handle guiding a young one through identity questions amid peer pressure? Drop your thoughts below, we’d love to hear!
