The action-adventure film inspired by the successful video game title Mortal Kombat is landing a sequel. Mortal Kombat 2 will be written by Jeremy Slater.

Slater was the chief writer for the Marvel/Disney+ series Moon Knight, which starred Oscar Isaac, Ethan Hawke, and Gaspard Ulliel, the French actor who died in a skiing accident last week after the first season of the show was finished. Slater is also working on a script for Screen Gems’ Thread, which will be directed by James Wan and produced by Atomic Monster.
His most recent screenplay credits include the Netflix/21 Laps feature Uprising, directed by Travis Knight and adapted for Universal and James Wan from Stephen King‘s The Tommyknockers. He also created and co-showrunner The Exorcist on Fox and developed The Umbrella Academy for Netflix/UCP/Dark Horse.
Mortal Kombat, inspired by the video game sensation developed by Ed Boon and John Tobias, was released in cinemas and on HBO Max at the same time during the pandemic in April 2021, debuting at No. 1 at the box office and ranked among the top feature films on HBO Max since its premiere. Simon McQuoid directed the picture, which he co-produced with Todd Garner, E. Bennett Walsh, and Wan. In last year’s action film, an MMA fighter sought for Earth’s finest champions to combat the Outworld’s adversaries. It was a war for the entire cosmos.
The Mortal Kombat 2 cast consisted of Lewis Tan, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Joe Taslim, Mehcad Brooks, Ludi Lin, Tadanobu Asano, and Chin Han. There are currently no additional deals in place for the sequel.
