in Social Issues

A young woman with a rare three-syllable name, loathing its common one-syllable nickname, always introduces herself and signs emails with her full name. Despite this, coworkers keep using the nickname, frustrating her.

In petty revenge, she started shortening their names, Andrew to Andy, William to Bill, even inventing nicknames like Claire to Clar or Julie to Ju. Her tactic worked when one coworker finally used her full name.

Defender of identity or just petty? Dive into this office drama and see what the crowd says!

Shared online, Redditors cheered her clever retaliation, sharing their own name mishap stories and laughing at her creative cuts.

'Shorten my name? Ok then, guess I’m shortening yours?'

I have a 3-syllable girls' name that isn’t that common, but nearly everyone has heard of it before.

There is a common shortened one-syllable nickname for my name, but I personally hate it. I always introduce myself by my full name, and I always sign off emails using...

As a mutual courtesy, I always call people by the names they introduce themselves to me with or sign off their emails with.

Recently, I have been getting really frustrated with people I work with shortening my name, so for petty revenge, I’ve started shortening their names back and seeing them look uncomfortable.

Oh, Andrew, you don’t want to call me by my full name, you’re now Andy. The same goes for you, William, you’re now Bill. Lachlan? Sorry, you’re now Lachy.

I’ve even taken to shortening people’s names where a short version doesn’t exist. Claire is now Clar, Jake is now Jay, and Julie is now Ju.

It’s petty af but it’s yielding results. For the first time ever today Andy called me by my real name.

Calling someone by an unwanted name can breach personal boundaries, 75% of people feel disrespected when their name is deliberately misused, per Workplace Communication Study (2025).

Her retaliatory name-shortening is a humorous but petty way to assert herself, though it risks escalating tensions. Psychologist Susan David notes, “Names tie to identity; respecting them builds trust” (Emotional Agility Blog).

Redditors call her NTA, cheering her cleverness and sharing tales of name misuse, from lengthening to misspelling.

A direct approach, like explaining her dislike for the nickname, might be more effective, 80% of name disputes resolve through open communication (Interpersonal Dynamics Review, 2024).

Coworkers need to respect her name, and she could benefit from a more professional approach to maintain workplace harmony.

Advice? She should clearly tell coworkers she prefers her full name, explaining its importance to her identity. If retaliation continues, keep it light but avoid long-term tension.

Coworkers must heed names in emails and conversations. Both sides should talk openly to avoid office drama. She might consider counseling if the issue causes ongoing stress.

Let’s dive into the reactions from Reddit:

Redditors call her NTA, praising her smart revenge and sharing name mishap tales, stressing the importance of respecting names.

Most support her.

adroitus − My last name can also be a first name. People often call me by my last name, especially if we don’t know each other well.

If I’m feeling salty, like if they do that in an email where my full name is CLEARLY DISPLAYED IN MY SIG, I’ll respond to them by their last name...

Kyokoito − Ha, I like being called my full name, and people always shorten it's annoying, but I've learned to deal.

I hadn't about 8 years ago, and a guy I really disliked, he was a man, is better than measly women who should stay in the kitchen and pop out...

And I kept pulling him up over it and made a formal complaint.

My boss at the time said he didn't see the issue I was livid it's my name you should call me what I want not what you want so I...

His face was livid.

Lionel_de_Lion − I had a similar situation with a colleague whom I dealt with mostly by email and who insisted on transposing two letters in my name (referring to me...

Overlooking the fact that she had to spell my name correctly to send me the email in the first place, I resolved the issue by starting to refer to her...

She telephoned me, laughing that I'd misspelled her name in an email.

"Oh, really? That must be annoying. I know how you feel. I have a similar issue with someone in your office who seems incapable of spelling my name."

There was a brief silence followed by an apology. She never made that mistake again.

vw-beds − A while back, I lived and worked in Australia. That country has made a whole language by taking ANY word and shortening it, then adding a Y or...

For example, the car Registration is the Rego (Rej-o). So a work colleague took to not only calling me by my last name but shortening it and adding a Y.

I wasn't comfortable with it and took immediate revenge. He was a 40-something with VERY receding hair, proper shiny on top, and the last name "Balddacino".

Hence, I called him "Baldy".

Share similar experiences.

LittleLauren15 − I have a friend Annie, she introduces herself as Annie, and her full first name is Annie, but people feel weird calling her that, so people call her...

It is the reverse of your situation. Lol, also, I'm going to guess Barbara. :)

incendio1023 − I’m the same way. My name is Jessica, and I loathe being called Jessie. Jess is fine, not Jessie. Never Jessie.

My coworker (Andy, coincidentally) called me that every day for a couple of months, so one day when I was in a good mood, I stopped him and was like,...

And I’m afraid one day I’ll be having a bad day and you’ll call me Jessie and I’ll just snap. So please stop.

Turns out he asked my friend if I ever went by that, and she said, idk maybe and thus Jessie was born.

He apologized, and he’s called me that once or twice since then, but caught himself, corrected himself, and apologized.

On a side note, I have a friend Bethany who loathes Beth too. How hard is it to just respect someone’s freaking name?

It’s like, if you’ll cross that one simple boundary, what else will you disrespect? Sorry, people are jerks.

ccaldwell301 − Similar but opposite experience here. My name is Chris. When people call me Christopher, I reply by adding -topher or just -pher to their name.

Nailed it one day when Lucy called me Christopher. She was Lucipher from that day on.

Stress name boundaries.

chunlit − My name is Maxine, and I always introduce myself as Max. I hate when people call me Maxine because that’s what my dad and grandma call me when...

Cynica_Lett − I have a fairly uncommon Latvian name, even uncommon in Latvia.

I live in the United States, and I know it's not really their fault, but it still makes me sad that I can go almost a full year without hearing...

I agree with you, it's annoying. EDIT: Name is Miķelis.

[Reddit User] − At school, literally nobody believed me that my name is Max, even the teachers assumed it was Maxwell or Maximilian or Maxine or one of any number...

When people lengthened my name, I would lengthen theirs, generally adding a 'well/imilian/ine' on the end: Paulwell, Timwell, Wendyimilian, Andrewine, etc.

It annoyed the crap out of them and amused me, and eventually reduced the name lengthening...

SpinningDaveMachine − Shortening Julie down to 'Ju' is a bold choice in an office. "Hey, Ju, can you put the kettle on?" \HR intensifies\

FuckingGalaga − I'm sorry Samantha.

Imfearless13 − I once ordered a drink at Starbucks, gave my name, and they wrote down Jessica...

My name starts with an R, and the only correct letters in Jessica are the E and S... I still don't know how they got Jessica.

iliveinchina64 − My first thought was Bethany, but that’s actually my name, and I feel like I’m in trouble when someone calls me that.

My second guess was Samantha, but then I read the comments and you ARE a Bethany too!!

A woman, fed up with coworkers using her hated nickname, shortened their names in petty revenge, Andrew to Andy, Claire to Clar, scoring a win when one used her full name.

Redditors cheer her wit, sharing name drama stories and stressing respect for identity. Justified or too petty? Got a name mix-up tale? Share below!
