Pregnant Woman Snaps After Houseguest Leaves Blood on the Toilet Three Times

by Leona Pham
August 4, 2026
in Social Issues

Living with family can become complicated when unexpected changes happen inside the home.

Even small issues can turn into major conflicts when people feel like their comfort and boundaries are being ignored.

The original poster (OP) is living with her grandparents while helping care for them, but things became tense after her brother invited a friend to stay in the house.

After repeatedly finding a mess in the shared bathroom, OP finally confronted the guest and demanded that she take responsibility.

Now OP is wondering if her frustration was justified or if she handled the situation the wrong way.

Read on to see what people had to say about this family drama.

8-month pregnant woman becomes frustrated when her brother’s friend repeatedly leaves period blood on the shared bathroom seat

Pregnant Woman Snaps After Houseguest Leaves Blood on the Toilet Three Times
not the actual photo

'AITA for snapping at a stranger for leaving period blood on the seat?'

I (24F) live with my grandparents and my brother (19M). A month ago, my

grandparents let one of my brother’s friends (19F) move in for 3 months(

it’s been one and a half) rent-free, chore-free, and apparently we’re paying

for her food too. I’m calling her “stranger” because I don’t know her. She

never introduced herself, and my brother had never even mentioned her

despite talking about his other friends all the time.. My grandma made this

decision with very little input from my grandpa and none from me.

I’m currently 8 months pregnant, so I don’t have periods. No one else in the

house besides stranger does. The first time I found period blood on the

toilet seat, I was disgusted but cleaned it myself and said nothing. The next

day it happened again. I asked my brother to either clean it or ask stranger

to, and to tell her to check the seat. He ended up making me tell her

because she was in the room with him. I did not know she was in there or I

would have adressed her. I politely asked her to please check the seat after

using the bathroom because leaving blood there was unsanitary. My

brother ended up cleaning it.

Today at 4 a.m., I got up to use the bathroom, which happens a lot now that

I’m 8 months pregnant, and there was period blood on the seat for the

third time. I was furious. Instead of cleaning it myself again, I went to my

brother’s door. His room is next to stranger’s, and I knew they were awake

because I could see the lights.

I knocked and raised my voice, saying this was the third time and that a

grown woman shouldn’t have to be reminded to clean up her own blood. I

told stranger to come clean it because I already had a Clorox wipe in my

hand. They both came out, and I was still upset. She balled up the wipe and

just dabbed at the blood before throwing it away. I told her dabbing wasn’t

cleaning it and that she needed to wipe the entire seat. She did and didn’t

say anything.

Then my brother tried to claim it wasn’t period blood, just like he did the

last time. It clearly was. I’ve had periods for over 10 years, and I know what

period blood looks like. That just made me angrier. I continued saying how

gross it was that this kept happening before they went back to their rooms.

I feel a little bad for yelling, but this was the third time. I can barely walk at

8 months pregnant, and I don’t think I should be cleaning another adult’s

period blood or repeatedly reminding them to clean up after themselves. AITA?

EDIT: I did not leave the blood I don’t have hemmroids or bleed I also check

the toilet before and after since 3 ppl use it . Not my grandparents either

it’s downstairs bathroom they can’t walk downstairs . I also know it’s period

blood because the pad wrappers left at the top of the trashcan that’s right

next to the toilet.

EDIT2: my brother and I are the caretakers for my grandparents . My

brother helps tremendously with the heavy lifting and stuff and I help with

my grandmas medical issues and cooking and cleaning . My brother and I do

NOT mooch off from them . It’s not as easy as just move out . If I did they

would have to go to a nursing home and nobody wants that for them when

my brother and I are capeable of taking care of them!!!! Also by me

mentioning there was no input of telling me about stranger moving in I

meant I was not even told at all until all of their stuff was piled in the

garage . I think I should have been told this person was going to be moving in.

EDIT 3: I am seeing the comments and I agree with some that yes I could

have introduced myself and went about approaching the situation other

than yelling . I felt justified in yelling due to me already having spoken

politely to her about it . Although I don’t think this situation makes me a

horrible person or mom to be based off from this situation so I really don’t

appreciate those comments.

I just got done with a long convo with my brother about the situation and

he doesn’t like how I yelled or approached it but he also doesn’t think

leaving blood on the seat is a big deal in his perspective but he said he sees

how it could be in mine .

my god you people are hung up on the fact that I named her stranger for

the sake of this post , you act like I call her stranger in person. ALSO this

post is not about my child’s father OR my grandparents it is about the

person continuously leaving blood on the toilet seat after being TOLD .

Again to the people who have REAL feedback thank you

Living with other people requires a level of trust that everyone in the home will respect shared spaces.

When that trust is broken repeatedly, even something that seems small can become a source of deep frustration.

A person may tolerate one mistake, maybe even two, but repeated behavior after a polite request can make them feel ignored and disrespected.

In this situation, OP’s anger was not simply about a dirty toilet seat.

The bigger issue was that she was eight months pregnant, already physically uncomfortable, and felt that she was being forced to clean up after another adult who had been asked to stop.

The fact that this person was a guest in the home likely made the situation feel even more unfair.

OP was not objecting to menstruation itself; she was upset about hygiene, responsibility, and the feeling that her concerns were not being taken seriously.

However, there is another side to consider.

The conflict became more intense because the relationship between OP and the houseguest started without much foundation.

They were essentially strangers sharing a home, and the first meaningful interaction between them happened because of a problem.

For the guest, being confronted loudly in the middle of the night may have felt humiliating and aggressive, even if OP’s frustration was understandable.

The issue was not that OP wanted cleanliness; it was how much resentment had accumulated before the confrontation happened.

This concept helps explain why this argument escalated.

OP had already tried handling the issue politely, and each repeated incident likely made her feel less respected.

Meanwhile, the houseguest may have focused on the embarrassment of being corrected rather than recognizing that the real concern was the repeated impact of her actions on someone else.

The solution is not for OP to ignore her boundaries or continue cleaning up after someone else.

Shared living requires accountability, especially when someone is staying rent-free and receiving support from the household.

At the same time, rebuilding a respectful relationship may require a calmer conversation where the focus is not on embarrassment but on expectations: keeping shared areas clean, communicating openly, and understanding that pregnancy can make everyday tasks much harder.

Ultimately, this situation is a reminder that small household conflicts often represent bigger emotional needs.

OP needed consideration and support.

The guest needed to understand that being welcomed into someone’s home also comes with responsibility.

Respecting each other’s space is what allows different people to live together peacefully.

Take a look at the comments from fellow users:

These commenters said OP was wrong

mmmbuttr − not the a__hole about the blood thing, but YTA for sure for

not bothering to address another human being by their name or with basic

decency. Maybe if you tried treating them like a person you'd have an

easier time getting along.

Substantial_Ad_2033 − Look. It’s gross to leave blood or any type of

“matter” in the bathroom. But wtf - you don’t know her name? And she’s

lived there a month? You sound exhausting. She sounds exhausting. Try

being less exhausting and see if the situation improves as it sounds like

you’re doing nothing to make anything better. ESH

TentaclesAndCupcakes − ESH. Her for the blood, obviously. But you sound

really difficult to get along with yourself. Calling her "the stranger" is weird.

She isn't a stranger anymore, she's lived in your grandparents home with

you for a month now.

waterswims − ESH - yes she should clean it up without asking. You don't

sound very nice. Your whole first paragraph is laying into this woman

before you even talk about the incident. The rent they charge her, the

chores she does and the food she eats is none of your business. You do not

need to be consulted.

If you don't like who your grandparents let live in their house, you know

what you can do right? Now, sure she should have cleaned it up, but this is

the third time of what. .. like 50 toilet trips during periods? And how much

blood was there really? A few spots?

These commenters criticized OP for treating the woman like a stranger and urged basic communication and respect

Ontas − YTA for not even adressing your brother's friend who has been

living at your grandparents' house, with their permission, for a month a

half. Grow up, she is not a stranger and you insisting in dehumanizing her

and pretending she does not exist while living under the same roof is

ridiculous and makes you automatically the biggest AH in that house

Anastriannnna − Okay, you're right to be angry, but for God's sake, start

using her name. This is a person, another human being. And don't say you

don't know her name, because that's impossible right now. When you write

"stranger this" and "stranger that," it's really uncomfortable to read. Why

did she move in with you? Did you ask her brother or her?

Maybe she's having some problems? The fact that she's not even trying to

argue with you suggests she might be struggling, maybe she doesn't have

money, maybe she's having problems at home, or maybe something bad

happened in her life, and that's why your grandmother and your brother

are helping her. And you don't know that.

And I think you don't know because you've been hostile towards her from

the very beginning, as evidenced by the way you describe her: "stranger

this, stranger that. " How is this girl supposed to even build a relationship

with you if you treat her like this? I have a feeling you're angry that your

grandmother didn't consult you about her moving in.

She didn't have to do that because it's her home (I think) and she can let

anyone she wants move in. You might think your opinion should be more

important in this regard, but it isn't.

Even if you're caring for your grandparents, which is commendable and I'm

glad they can count on you, moving in was their decision, which they had

the right to make. Of course, these are all assumptions; I don't know if

they're true; I'm not in your head. Perhaps this is just a misinterpretation of

your post, caused by your negative attitude towards this girl.

The fact that she's leaving this blood behind is obviously a problem, and

you're clearly pointing it out to her, but maybe it would be worth taking

the time to talk to her longer, learn about her, get to know her name (lol),

and not isolate yourself in your own world even though you live in the same house.

I know you might say the same thing now, that why doesn't she make an

effort to build a relationship with you? But her situation is different, less comfortable.

She moved into your grandparents' house and is sensing negative energy

from you or whatever, so it's natural for her to hide from you and avoid

conversations, especially if her personal situation is difficult and she has

nowhere else to go. In that case, you should be the first to reach out to her.

As for the blood, I assume she's not doing it on purpose. Perhaps she's a bit

messy by nature and tends to ignore such things. I know it's annoying, but

such people exist, and that doesn't mean they're bad or unworthy of your

attention. You can talk about that too.

Swallow your pride, knock on her door, offer to have tea or go out for

dinner, and get to know her. Find out who she is, what she likes, why she

moved in with your grandparents, and what her interests are.

It might take time if you've shown her from the start that you don't like her

being there, but maybe you'll eventually become friends since she's already

living there. Besides, you should care about finding out, even if only to see

if this girl needs help or if she's trying to take advantage of your

grandparents or scam them out of money or something.

It would be good if you got to know her without irritation and negativity.

Good luck, I wish all the best.

Key-Win-1728 − NTA for the period blood but yta how you treat her in

general. First of all it's non of your decision who lives in your grandparents

house, why should they have asked for your input. Second have you

introduced yourself?

The way you write about her is giving very cold dhoulder and i would also

not try to get close to someone who dislikes me that much before even

knowing me me

These commenters supported OP’s frustration

Frankensteins_Kid − NTA. Even if it wasn't period blood, it's still unsanitary

to leave any bodily fluid on the toilet seat. Especially when you're a guest

at someone's house. She's 19, not 10. Logically, she should have had

_years_ of experience on how to deal with period blood. And how to be a

decent houseguest for that matter.

beththereader − NTA, and you're completely right, you should NOT have to

teach a grown woman to clean up after herself. I've always found it

absolutely baffling that someone can look at the mess they've made in a

toilet, knowing they're subjecting everyone else to their bodily fluids, and

just decide not to clean it.

MinuteMood22000 − NTA. Grown adults should be capable of looking at

the toilet after they get up from it. This is the same for me as p__s on the

seat or somebody who doesn't flush their s__t.

Ziziphus_Gi6836 − I don't blame you for finally losing it. Accidents

sometimes happen, but cleaning up someone else's blood three times after

being told is disresprctful. No one should have to do that, especially when

they are eight months pregnant.

Decision_Famous − Nta I’m prob going to get downvoted but you’re not

wrong! I suffer from both pcos and endometriosis and still live at home. .

never have I left period blood for my dad to find on the toilet/ or in the

bathroom I make sure I hide my disposable underwear and clean up after

myself because I’m adult she’s not a child she’s 19 for godsake!

also the whole letting her move in without asking for rent etc doesn’t fly

with me either!

The OP’s frustration was not really about a single dirty toilet seat, it was about feeling ignored in her own home after already trying to handle the situation politely.

Being eight months pregnant, helping care for grandparents, and sharing a bathroom with someone who repeatedly ignores a basic hygiene request would understandably create resentment.

At the same time, the confrontation escalated because months of frustration came out all at once.

Do you think OP was justified in finally snapping after being ignored, or should she have handled the third incident differently?

How would you deal with a housemate who refuses to respect simple boundaries? Share your thoughts below!
