Sharon Stone, set to receive AARP The Magazine’s prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award at the Movies for Grownups Awards Gala on February 6, has always been made of strong stuff.
Raised in the small town of Meadville, Pennsylvania, she grew up in a large, loving family, deeply connected to her parents, Joseph and Dorothy. From a young age, Stone showed a sharp intellect and a creative spark that set her apart.
Modeling became her gateway to a world beyond Meadville, opening doors to global travel, a successful acting career, and her eventual rise to stardom in Hollywood. As we honor her remarkable journey, we celebrate Sharon Stone’s life and career through these iconic photos.
In a special touch, we asked Stone herself to write the captions for each image, and she graciously agreed, offering a personal glimpse into the moments that shaped her incredible life.
#1. Sharon As a Toddler
A young Sharon Stone is seen at home, pointing to an early modeling photo of herself on a calendar, humorously remarking, “Clearly, this was a life choice.” This moment hints at the beginning of a journey that would take her far from her small-town roots.
In the accompanying photo, Stone is captured in her hometown of Meadville, Pennsylvania, surrounded by a lively group of puppies and her four siblings, reflecting the warmth and closeness of her family upbringing.
These early snapshots offer a glimpse of the strong, determined spirit that would later define her remarkable career.
#2. Making Inroads with Horror Films
In Deadly Blessing (1981), Sharon Stone reflects on the early days of her career with a touch of humor, noting, “It’s a horror movie, a Wes Craven film from the nascent moments of my career. Not one of us knew anything about anything, except Ernest Borgnine.”
The film marked one of Stone’s first major roles, and her comment highlights the raw, unpolished nature of those early projects, where most of the cast was still figuring things out. Borgnine, the veteran actor, stood as the seasoned professional among a cast of newcomers.
Stone’s reflection subtly underscores how much she learned in those early days, finding her footing in an industry where experience is often the best teacher.
#3. Classic Sci-Fi Moments
In Total Recall (1990), Sharon Stone starred alongside action icon Arnold Schwarzenegger, delivering a memorable performance. Reflecting on their time together, she quips, “I kicked the crap out of him.
That’s all I’m saying here.” The line, filled with playful confidence, refers to their intense fight scenes in the sci-fi blockbuster, where Stone’s character goes toe-to-toe with Schwarzenegger’s.
Despite Schwarzenegger’s tough-guy persona, Stone proved she could hold her own, both in action and attitude, solidifying her reputation as a fierce and formidable presence on screen.
#4. ‘Basic Instinct’: The Film that Made Stone a Star
“This photo was taken on the day we shot the nightclub scene. It was fun, sexy, and one of those moments that really captured the energy of Basic Instinct. Being part of this film was, without a doubt, a highlight of my career.
Working with Michael [Douglas] was incredible—he’s such a talented, bold actor. His choices are daring, and he carries a powerful presence in every single scene.
I’ve always aspired to be like Michael in that way, taking my craft seriously and respecting the opportunities my career has given me to be a voice in the world.”
#5. Oscar-Nomination Worthy Performance in 1995’s ‘Casino’
“This shot is from the introduction of my character, Ginger. Marty [Scorsese] and I had a wonderful conversation about our mutual love for iconic intro shots in classic films. We reminisced about our favorite moments featuring women in cinema over the years.
As I walked into the scene, I drew inspiration from one of my all-time favorites: Rita Hayworth in Gilda, especially the way she tossed her head back and confidently said, ‘Sure, I’m decent.’
I aimed to embody that same feline coolness, wit, and charm because this was the moment when Bob would see me for the first time in the film.
I wanted to be fabulous—not just for Robert De Niro, the legendary actor I had always dreamed of working with, but also for Bob, the man who exuded such sexiness and charisma.”
#6. Crazy Moment at the Oscars
“OMG. I was nominated for an Oscar for Casino, and Quincy Jones—who was producing the Oscars and is a dear friend—was with me to present two awards. I always make it a point to hand the winner their ballot that confirms their victory.
This time, however, I accidentally gave the first winner the second unannounced ballot without realizing it. When I noticed, I looked at Quincy, and we both realized we didn’t have the correct ballot or any idea where it was.
Quincy sprinted backstage to Price Waterhouse to see if they could look it up on the computer, while I tried to keep the audience entertained with a joke. This moment captures when he finally returned, and we—relieved—shared the correct winner with the audience.
It got a huge laugh, turning into one of those crazy live television moments. After that, I thought I’d be nervous about the Oscars, but everything else felt easy in comparison!”
#7. Date Night at the Oscars in 1998
“Attending the Oscars with my new husband, Phil Bronstein, was such a special experience. I was even wearing his shirt, which added a personal touch to the night. Having a husband to share that moment with was incredible.
My dear friend Vera Wang designed the beautiful lavender skirt I wore, making everything feel even more fabulous. The entire evening was just wonderful!”
#8. Dressed-Down Chic
“This is a snapshot of everyday life while traveling abroad. It was taken outside my apartment at the hotel in Paris, a place I’ve stayed for the past 20 years.
In this photo, you can see my bodyguard on the front right, with her staff positioned on the left. It captures the blend of my personal and professional life during my time in such a beautiful city.”
#9. Sharon With Her Parents
“As you can see, we shared countless laughs together. Their love for each other was immeasurable. They were married for 60 wonderful years before we lost Dad two years ago.
It’s difficult to put into words the profound sense of loss we all feel without him, but the gifts he gave to each of us continue to resonate in the very best parts of who we are today.”
#10. Mommy-Moments in the Park
“I’m taking some much-needed mommy time and enjoying a day at the park with two of my three kids, Laird and Quinn, who are now 5 and 6 years old.
Being a mom—especially a single mom—brings a unique mix of joy, challenges, and blessings. It’s moments like these that make it all worthwhile.”
#11. Humanitarian Work in Uganda
“This photo captures a moment from my trip to Uganda, where I gained firsthand insight into how clean-water wells are installed, operated, and maintained to provide long-term benefits to communities.
This child is experiencing clean water for the very first time in his life. Access to clean water is vital; it helps stop the spread of cholera and prevents mother-to-child transmission of AIDS.
By enabling mothers to use clean water to mix powdered milk for their children—who can be born free of AIDS thanks to a new drug called nevirapine—clean water plays a crucial role in promoting healthy births and reducing the risk of various illnesses.
Today, clean water access remains one of the most urgent issues facing our planet. I am proud to collaborate with Drop in the Bucket, an organization dedicated to installing clean-water wells in African nations.
To support this cause, I’ve designed a line of diamond jewelry in partnership with Damiani, with proceeds going toward funding these vital clean-water projects.”
#12. Even The Paparazzi Wears Black Tie
“This photo was taken on the iconic red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival, where it’s interesting to see that all the paparazzi are dressed in black tie as well.
I find that so chic! It adds a touch of elegance to the atmosphere and highlights the glamour of the event.”
