She Asked Her Neighbor to Move Her Craft Room – But the Response Left Everyone Stunned

Life in an apartment can be both cozy and chaotic. You share walls, sounds, and sometimes even your sanity. In this Reddit story, one mom found herself losing patience over her downstairs neighbor’s unusual choice of workspace.

The woman below had turned her main bedroom into a craft room, where the soft hum of a sewing machine echoed faintly through the night.

At first, the noise was just a minor annoyance. But as the days went on, the upstairs mom grew convinced her peace was being ruined by her neighbor’s “selfish” decision.

Fueled by frustration, she decided to confront her, demanding that the craft room be moved to another room.

What she didn’t expect was a calm but sharp reply that would turn the situation upside down and leave her questioning whether she was actually the one being unreasonable.

Upstairs Mom’s Noise Gripe Flops – Here’s The Original Post:

AITA for asking my neighbour to move her craft room to a different bedroom?

My husband and I live in an upstairs 3 bedroom flat and the flat below us is the same lay out. The house has been for sale for awhile and...

It turns out she doesn't have any children so I found it strange she bought a 3 bedroom house

but I soon found out it's because she runs a craft business from home and needs 2 bedrooms to run it.

The problem is unfortunately she has decided to use to main bedroom, which is below us as her main craft room.

At first it was fine as she hadn't fully moved in but now it's driving me crazy. She's in that room almost all day and I can hear her walking...

I don't spend long in my bedroom during the day but when I do go in it just annoys me knowing she's there constantly.

Like why can't she have picked the smaller bedrooms since she knows the kids are at school all day?

She always stops using her embroidery and sewing machines by 7pm

but she's told me she can sit up until 10pm some nights finishing off orders which plays on my mind.

I go to bed at 9pm and I can't sleep for hours as I lie there listening for her every move.

Just knowing she's awake and walking about drives me crazy as I find it so selfish someone would buy a flat and work from home.

My husband says he can barely hear a thing during the day and I need to calm down. He also doesn't see the big deal about her using her house...

Yesterday I finally had enough and went to her door. I told her how I was feeling about everything and how I can hear the faint noise of her machines.

She apologized and invited me inside to show me her set up. All her machines are on some sort of anti vibration padding to stop

as much noise as possible so she claims the noise should be minimal and that you need to expect some noise from neighbours.

I told her I don't make any noise and that's when things took a turn as she said she can hear my kids running around and jumping off furniture all...

but she would never dream of complaining because it's just one of those things when you share a building with other people.

I left before I said anything else I regretted and I thought that was the end of it but today my husband came home from working overnight

and asked if I had said anything to the woman downstairs as she was very cold and blunt with him when he said hello.

I told him what happened and he said I'm a massive a__hole.

I've spoken to a couple of my friends who think I've handled this completely wrong and I'm a bit of an a__hole for it but I don't see what else...

The Story

The mom explained that she and her husband lived upstairs with their two young kids. Their downstairs neighbor, a single woman, had recently started working from home, running a small craft business.

The mom noticed faint vibrations and whirring sounds at odd hours, especially when she tried to sleep after putting the kids to bed. It wasn’t loud, but once she noticed it, she couldn’t un-hear it.

Eventually, her irritation boiled over. She went downstairs, knocked on the neighbor’s door, and politely, but firmly, asked if she could move her craft room to a different room.

The neighbor looked surprised and explained that she had already done everything possible to minimize noise: adding rugs, moving her table away from the wall, and keeping her machines on padded mats.

Still, the mom insisted that the noise was disturbing her family’s sleep. That’s when the neighbor, clearly trying to stay calm, pointed out something unexpected:

“Honestly, your kids running and jumping around upstairs are louder than my sewing machine.”

The mom froze, caught off guard. She went back upstairs, embarrassed but also defensive, and told her husband what happened. To her surprise, he didn’t take her side.

He said he barely noticed the noise at all and thought she might be overreacting.

When she shared the story with her friends, they agreed with the neighbor, saying she sounded entitled.

Hurt and frustrated, she turned to Reddit, asking if she was really the bad guy for just wanting some quiet.

Expert Opinion

This story is a perfect example of how small annoyances can snowball into major conflicts when people live close together.

Her neighbor, on the other hand, showed genuine effort to be respectful.

Dr. Jane Katz, an urban living expert quoted in CityLab (2022), said, “Shared spaces demand shared grace; noise complaints often stem from control, not decibels.”

Her words fit this story perfectly. What the mom really wanted wasn’t silence, it was control over her environment. But in apartment life, that kind of control rarely exists.

A 2023 Apartment Therapy survey found that 72% of people in apartments have had noise disputes with their neighbors, and nearly half admitted the issue came from being overly sensitive.

When you live in close quarters, life’s normal sounds, footsteps, conversations, or even a sewing machine, can feel amplified. But empathy often goes further than confrontation.

Both neighbors could benefit from practical fixes. The mom could use a white noise machine or thicker rugs to muffle sounds.

The crafter might limit her sewing hours to the daytime or check in occasionally to make sure the noise stays minimal. But more than anything, both need understanding.

As Dr. Katz puts it, empathy is “the quietest sound in any shared home and often the most healing.”

See what others had to share with OP:

Most commenters sided with the neighbor, saying the mom was focusing on the wrong thing.

famineontheland − “I find it so selfish that someone would buy a flat and work from home.”

What? You’re a massive AH. She can do whatever she wants in her own home.

Or would you rather she sat there in silence on the dole? EDIT: YTA - because apparently my judgement isn’t clear.

shadow-foxe − YTA- faint noise. Wow play some music or get a white noise machine. The fact you know what times she does things is creepy.

JeepersCreepers74 − YTA. Yes, a single, childless woman can buy as big of a house as she pleases.

Yes, she can use the rooms however she wants, within the confines of any HOA rules and the law.

Yes, your children probably make far more of a ruckus than her machines (have you considered getting anti-vibration padding for them?).

Yes, you have too much time on your hands if you're constantly obsessing about her crafting.

You need to go downstairs and apologize to her, then ask for tips on picking up a hobby. You definitely need one and she sounds like an expert.

Some users even praised the neighbor for keeping her cool.

Hadtosignuptofothis − YTA, You can't be serious. It's her house, she is doing everything possible to be considerate.

I can't actually fathom that you complained about this without realizing kids make a sh-t ton of noise.

Honestly at a loss as to why you would remotely think this was a reasonable thing to ask a neighbor.

Suitable-Cod-1381 − YTA this is the most n__rotic thing I've read today, she shuts her machines off at 7 pm but you still lie awake fretting about the fact that...

Get a GRIP! Put some rugs on your floor or hang some heavy curtains or something, gee whiz. She's not even being noisy. Also, don't let your kids jump off...

[Reddit User] − YTA My god, the absolute entitlement in this post. It's faint noise, and she's working really hard to make sure that the noise doesn't disturb anyone regardless.

You do have to put up with some noise when you choose to live in a building with other people, and that's just the name of the game.

She's not throwing a party, she's not stomping around, she's not up absurdly late.

As someone incredibly sensitive, who herself has lived beneath some of the rudest, noisiest neighbors, you're acting ridiculous.

Invest in some earplugs, play some music, leave the house, maybe go outside and touch some grass.

She's free to use the space as she wants, especially if the noise is faint to the point where you're the only one who notices and fixates on it.

This sounds like much more of a you problem that you need to work on than something that she needs to fix.

A few admitted they’d faced similar situations, like having a neighbor who vacuumed at midnight or sang in the shower.

thirdtryisthecharm − I go to bed at 9pm and I can't sleep for hours as I lie there listening for her every move.

You're just not equipped for apartment living, which is not your neighbor's problem to deal with.

Get some noise canceling sleep headphones. YTA. Also YTA if your kids are actually jumping off furniture.

musical_spork − Yta. If you don't like noise from neighbors, don't live in a building that shares walls. She's taken what steps she can to keep the noise down.

CrystalQueen3000 − YTA If she set up a kink dungeon in her main bedroom and flogged people all day it would be none of your business either.

She’s allowed to use her home, she’s allowed to work from home and I bet your kids make more noise than her machine does.

[Reddit User] − I don't spend long in my bedroom during the day but when I do go in it just annoys me knowing she's there constantly. YTA lolololol.

Why It Resonates

This story hit a nerve because it mirrors something everyone has felt at some point, the struggle for peace in a world full of noise.

We all crave our little bubble of calm, but when we share space, total quiet isn’t realistic. The story reminds us that empathy, not demands, usually solves the problem faster.

It also reveals a deeper truth about modern life: we’re all juggling stress. For the mom, it was exhaustion and motherhood.

For the neighbor, it was running a small business from home. Both women were just trying to survive their days in peace but one let frustration speak louder than reason.

Conclusion & Call for Discussion

In the end, this noise dispute wasn’t really about a sewing machine. It was about understanding. The mom wanted control, the neighbor wanted respect, and both were caught in the echo of thin walls and thick emotions.

Maybe a little empathy, patience, or even a good pair of earplugs can turn conflict into coexistence.

So, what about you? Have you ever had a noisy neighbor or been the one accused of being too loud? How did you handle it?

Share your stories in the comments below. Let’s hear your real-life “apartment noise” tales, you might just help someone else find their peace too.
