She Let Her Friend Stay After a Breakup, Then Discovered She Had Been Taking Her Late Mother’s Jewelry

in Social Issues

When you let a close friend stay in your home during a crisis, you expect to offer them a safe place to land, not discover that they have been quietly taking your belongings.

For this 24-year-old man, the betrayal was even more painful because the things his friend took were not ordinary jewelry. They belonged to his mother, who died when he was only six. He barely remembers her, so the bracelets, chains, earrings, and other keepsakes his father gave him became a way to feel connected to a woman he never really got the chance to know.

Then his friend Jess, who had been staying at his apartment after a fight with her boyfriend, took some of them without asking.

At first, it seemed like one terrible mistake. Then another discovery made the situation much harder to explain.

'WITBA for kicking out my friend after she almost lost my dead mom’s jewelry?'

Throwaway because the other party is an avid redditor. I (24M) lost my mother when I was 6. I hardly remember her,

but I have a few keepsakes that my father gave me growing up.

He wanted me to have them so I could paint a mental picture of what my mother was like and I’ve always felt like they brought me closer to that...

Some of it is more feminine, while some of it is pretty androgynous, so I usually wear a few of her bracelets and chains, and the rest I keep in...

Recently, my friend Jess (23F) has been staying at my place after a fight with her boyfriend. She’s been sleeping in my roommate’s room since he’s gone for the summer...

Last night, I was putting back one of my mother’s bracelets when I noticed a few pieces were missing, most notably a pair of her earrings.

I don’t have my ears pierced so I knew I hadn’t moved them. I went to ask Jess about it, and she didn’t even have to answer because I immediately...

I told her it was inappropriate to go through my things and take something without asking. She got defensive and said “They’re just earrings,” and “You don’t even have your...

Jess knows that the box contains my mother’s things so I was pretty pissed off by how dismissive she was.

I told her very clearly not to touch anything in that box again and explained why I keep all of it, even the pieces I’ll probably never wear.

She eventually gave the earrings back and I thought that was the end of it. This morning, Jess sent me a text that just said, “I’m so sorry.” I went...

Apparently, she had also taken my mother’s emerald necklace. She said she’d taken it before our argument and was trying to put it back this morning when she dropped it...

I was livid. I called my boyfriend over because he knows way more about plumbing than I do, and thankfully he managed to get the necklace out of the pipes...

Jess keeps apologizing and pointing out that I got the necklace back but that’s not really the issue to me.

She went through a box that she knew contained my dead mother’s belongings, helped herself to multiple pieces of jewelry without asking, and then acted like I was being ridiculous...

She’s supposed to stay here for at least another few weeks, but at this point I don’t really trust her in my home.

At the same time I know she’s already having problems with her boyfriend and kicking her out would leave her scrambling to find somewhere else to stay,

and my boyfriend told me to “just thug it out”, but I’m not sure if I can. WIBTA if I told her she needs to find somewhere else to stay?.

**UPDATE:**. (Reddit took down my update so I’m just adding it here)

I appreciate all the comments and advice I got in my original post! I felt incredibly validated in my decision last night to officially ask Jess to leave, which she...

I asked her again why she felt like she could take my mother’s jewelry, and she brought up something I probably should have included in my original post: I have...

About a year ago, Jess asked to borrow one of my mother’s bracelets for a mutual friend’s wedding. I agreed, and she returned it later that night.

I basically threw it back at her that permission then does not mean permission now, and more importantly the difference was that she asked me that time. She apologized again...

I think I also understated how close Jess and I are in my original post. We’ve been friends for around five years. She’s been an incredibly important part of my...

That’s why I was so torn about kicking her out in the first place. I feel much more confident about that decision after what happened today though.

Jess left early for work this morning, and I took the opportunity to follow some of the advice in the comments and look around the room she’s been staying in....

I did not go through her personal belongings. I didn’t open her suitcase, bags, purse, etc., even though some people suggested I should. I just did a general sweep of...

Everything seemed normal until I looked under the bed. There was a Phoebe Bridgers shirt my boyfriend gave me a while back. I rarely wear it, so it had completely...

I initially thought it was weird that it was even in there, but when I picked it up there was a pair of my underwear underneath it. My heart dropped...

There is literally no reason either of those things should be under my roommate’s bed. I vacuumed his room a day or two before Jess started staying here so I...

My clothes are always in my bedroom and occasionally the laundry room. She would have had to deliberately take them from either my closet or my laundry.

Last night I told Jess I would give her until next Wednesday to find somewhere else to stay but I’m moving that timeline up now. I’ve reached out to some...

If it comes down to it I’ll drive her to her parents’ town about two hours away this weekend.

I’m angry and extremely uncomfortable but I’m not going to leave someone I’ve cared about for five years to fend for herself in a city where finding emergency housing is...

There are also a few things from my original post that people asked about that I want to clear up. Yes, thank you to everyone who pointed out that keeping...

I honestly never thought much about it. I don’t have much desk or closet space and I don’t own a vanity so keeping jewelry in the room with a large...

It was sitting on one of those over the toilet storage things which is about a half meter (guesstimate) away from the sink so I have no idea how she...

She definitely lied to me and I didn’t question it yesterday because the situation was already so weird. I’ve since made room in my closet and moved the entire box...

Someone also asked whether the jewelry is valuable because I mentioned an emerald necklace. I’ve never had the collection appraised because the monetary value has never really mattered to me....

He doesn’t think any individual piece is worth some insane amount of money, but there is a lot of it. For what it’s worth, I went through the box more...

A few people also questioned what happened between Jess and her boyfriend (M25). I only know what Jess has told me, but according to her, he somewhat abruptly decided that...

and asked her to come with him. She told him she couldn’t uproot her entire life and move continents on such short notice, and they had a huge argument about...

To my knowledge there’s nothing involving domestic violence or anything like that. She was very angry when she told me what happened and used some harsh words to describe him,...

I do feel bad for her. I think suddenly telling your partner that you’re moving continents in a couple of months and asking them to either follow you or deal...

My boyfriend wasn’t really taking the situation that seriously before. He agreed that what she did with my mother’s jewelry was disrespectful, he basically thought I had handled it and...

He wanted to be here when I confronted her but I asked him not to. He’s an amazing guy, but he can get pretty intense when he’s angry and I...

I just want Jess out of my apartment and I want to understand why she has been taking my things.

She’s still at work as I’m writing this. When she gets back, I’m going to explain that Wednesday is no longer going to work and that I need her to...

I’m still apprehensive about the idea of completely cutting off someone who has been such a huge part of my life but this has gone from disrespectful to incredibly weird...

I can’t rationalize or justify why she has more of my things anymore. I don’t think I’m reading into it.. I will update when I talk to her.

He Thought the Missing Earrings Were a One-Time Mistake

OP kept his late mother’s jewelry in a box in his bathroom. Some pieces were feminine, while others were more androgynous, and he occasionally wore the bracelets and chains himself.

Jess had been staying in his roommate’s room while the roommate was away for the summer. They had been friends for around five years, and OP had previously trusted her enough to let her borrow one of his mother’s bracelets for a wedding.

The difference was that she had asked that time.

One night, OP noticed that several pieces were missing, including a pair of his mother’s earrings. Since he had no pierced ears, he knew he had not moved them himself.

Then he saw Jess wearing them.

When he confronted her, she became defensive.

“They’re just earrings,” she reportedly said, questioning why he even owned them if he could not wear them.

That response hurt almost as much as the theft itself.

Jess knew the jewelry belonged to OP’s deceased mother. She knew what the collection meant to him. OP explained why he kept every piece, including jewelry he would probably never wear.

Eventually, Jess returned the earrings, and OP thought the problem was over.

The next morning, she sent him a message saying she was sorry.

It turned out she had taken something else.

The Emerald Necklace Nearly Disappeared Down the Drain

Jess admitted she had also taken OP’s mother’s emerald necklace before their argument. She claimed she had been trying to return it that morning when she accidentally dropped it into the sink.

OP was furious.

He called his boyfriend, who knew more about plumbing, and thankfully they managed to retrieve the necklace from the pipes without damaging it.

But getting the necklace back did not make everything okay.

The necklace could have been permanently lost. More importantly, Jess had gone through a box containing irreplaceable family keepsakes, taken multiple pieces, and only admitted what she had done after something went wrong.

OP no longer trusted her in his home.

His boyfriend initially told him to “just thug it out” because Jess was already dealing with problems in her relationship and would have nowhere obvious to go. OP felt guilty about making her scramble for housing.

Then he discovered something else.

After Jess left for work, OP checked the bedroom where she had been staying. He did not open her luggage or search her personal bags. He simply looked around to make sure nothing belonging to him or his roommate had disappeared.

Under the bed, he found a shirt his boyfriend had given him.

Underneath the shirt was a pair of his underwear.

He knew the clothes had not been there before Jess arrived. His laundry was kept separately, and there was no reasonable explanation for either item to be under his roommate’s bed.

Suddenly, the jewelry no longer looked like an isolated incident.

OP moved the entire jewelry collection into his closet and decided Jess could no longer stay.

When Trust Is Broken, the Problem Is Bigger Than the Missing Items

Psychologist Eileen Kennedy-Moore, PhD, explains that trust in friendship is built through consistent behavior, honesty, respect, and reliability. She also notes that when a friend violates trust deeply enough to make us question whether they genuinely care about us, the friendship itself may become difficult to maintain. (Psychology Today)

That is exactly what happened here.

OP had already given Jess permission to borrow his mother’s jewelry in the past. But permission is specific. Borrowing one bracelet after asking does not create permanent access to someone’s private belongings.

The bigger issue was that Jess crossed a boundary after being trusted, then minimized the violation by calling the earrings “just earrings.” The objects may have had little meaning to her, but that did not make their value to OP irrelevant.

The American Psychological Association defines a boundary as a psychological limit that protects a person’s integrity and helps establish realistic limits within relationships.

OP’s boundary was simple: don’t take his mother’s belongings without asking.

Once Jess knowingly crossed it, OP had every reason to reconsider whether she was safe to have in his home.

And the discovery of his clothing made the situation even more disturbing. Whatever Jess’s explanation might be, OP no longer had to keep guessing whether he could trust her around his belongings.

Here's what the community had to contribute:

Commenters told OP to ask Jess to leave and pointed out that the issue was not simply the necklace almost disappearing down a drain.

Pick-Up-Pennies − kick. her. out. She is a thief and you only know about the things of which you'd written here. \+++++ Edited to thank you for the awards!

Beatleslover4ever1 − Kick her out before she steals from you again.

bmw5986 − YWNBTA for kicking her out. She crossed a major line and she did it willfully. She knew what that jewelry meant to you. More importantly, it wasn't hers...

Get a small lock box, put the jewelry in there and hide it in the back of your closet. Personally, if I cant trust you, I dont want you staying...

morningwoodx420 − You wouldn't be the a__hole, but how long has Jess been staying with you? It's possible that, unless she voluntarily leaves, you might need to evict her.

flyingknives4love − She HELPED HERSELF to your late mother's jewelry. Regardless of her almost damaging / losing the necklace, the fact that she HELPED HERSELF TO THEM is enough to...

Free-Place-3930 − Kick her out. Come on. If you let her stay, you are giving her permission to steal your dead mother things. Have some common sense and self respect....

Several people urged OP to secure the jewelry immediately and check that nothing else was missing before Jess left.

surrounded-by-morons − She needs to move out immediately. But first go get your jewelry box out of the bathroom and into a safer spot behind locked doors. Tell her she...

She will rob you blind then blame you if she gets caught. Change your locks. Trust me.

Lillie-Bee − The bigger issue is she doesn’t respect boundaries. You shouldn’t have to tell someone not to go in your room and not to take your stuff. She lacks...

SongAcceptable7546 − She dropped the necklace down the sink because she was either putting it on or taking it off in front of the bathroom mirror. Probably putting it on...

As others have said, check your jewellery before she leaves. But she needs to leave. She repaid your kindness with deceit and betrayal. She stole from you and told you...

BreadfruitEcstatic72 − Op, mayhaps one of those problems her boyfriend has with her is that she’s got sticky fingers? A lack of respect for others things? Boundaries in general? Just...

OP did not owe Jess unlimited access to his home simply because they had been friends for five years.

He had already helped her when she needed somewhere to stay. He had trusted her with belongings that carried enormous sentimental value. He even tried to make sure she would have somewhere else to go rather than abandoning her.

But kindness does not require ignoring betrayal.

The most painful part may be that OP still cares about Jess and cannot understand why someone he trusted would behave this way. Sometimes there is no satisfying explanation. A person can have been a good friend for years and still make a choice that permanently changes how you see them.

The necklace was recovered.

The jewelry was moved.

But the trust between them may be much harder to repair.

Was OP right to make Jess leave, or should he have given a five-year friendship another chance?
