She Refused to Buy a New Sofa for Her Roommate After Paying for the Kitchen Supplies Herself

in Social Issues

Moving in with a roommate is supposed to make life easier, especially when both people agree ahead of time about who will bring what.

For this roommate, the arrangement seemed straightforward. Her new roommate would bring a TV stand, coffee table, and kitchen supplies. OP would bring the sofa, TV, and microwave.

The problem started almost immediately after they moved in.

The promised items never appeared, even as packages of clothes and bedroom decorations kept arriving for the roommate.

OP eventually bought her own pots and pans because she could not even cook without them. Then, weeks later, her roommate asked her to contribute toward a bigger sofa so she could invite friends over.

OP refused. To her, buying another sofa after covering the kitchen essentials felt less like sharing expenses and more like subsidizing someone who had not kept her side of the bargain.

'AITAH for refusing to buy/contribute to a sofa?'

The Agreement Fell Apart Almost Immediately

Before moving in, the two roommates had agreed to split the cost of shared household items. The plan was simple enough to avoid future arguments: each person would bring specific things, and both would benefit from them.

OP held up her end. She brought the sofa, television, and microwave.

Her roommate was supposed to arrive with a TV stand, coffee table, pots, pans, and other kitchen supplies.

Five days passed. Then two weeks. The promised items still were not there.

When OP asked about it, her roommate said she would shop for the supplies after getting paid.

Meanwhile, OP noticed multiple Amazon deliveries containing clothes and decorations for the roommate’s bedroom.

Eventually, OP stopped waiting and bought the kitchen supplies herself because she needed to cook.

She did not particularly care about the missing coffee table or TV stand because she spent little time in the apartment. But she did care about being asked to spend even more money.

Then came the message that pushed everything over the edge.

Her roommate wanted a larger sofa because the existing one was too small when she had friends over. She asked OP to buy or contribute toward a replacement.

OP’s answer was blunt. She explained that she had already purchased the kitchen supplies her roommate promised to provide, and she was not willing to spend more money making the apartment feel complete when the other person had not done the same for her.

Her roommate was offended.

She argued that the living room was a shared space and accused OP of being petty about the situation.

OP admitted that her delivery may have been a little mean, but she still did not think that made her responsible for buying a new sofa.

A Shared Space Means Shared Responsibility

The roommate’s argument about the living room was not completely wrong. A sofa in a shared living room would benefit both people.

But OP saw the bigger picture differently. The kitchen was also a shared space, and she had already spent her own money there because her roommate did not follow through.

That made the sofa request feel less like an ordinary household purchase and more like another example of unequal contribution.

Several Reddit commenters agreed with OP and pointed out that her roommate could simply purchase a larger sofa herself if she wanted one.

Others warned that the situation was likely to become more difficult, especially because the roommates had already discovered that their original expense-sharing system was not working.

One practical suggestion was to stop treating major purchases as automatically shared. Each roommate could buy their own belongings, agree on what can be shared, and keep receipts and agreements in writing.

That approach may not feel especially friendly, but it can prevent arguments when trust over money has already started to disappear.

The bigger issue is that OP and her roommate barely knew each other before moving in together.

What looked like a simple agreement on paper did not account for what would happen when one person followed through and the other did not.

Fairness Works Both Ways

Psychology Today has published guidance on setting healthy boundaries, emphasizing that boundaries work best when people communicate their limits clearly and consistently rather than relying on resentment to enforce them. (Psychology Today)

That idea fits this roommate dispute surprisingly well.

OP’s boundary was not really about the sofa itself. She was saying that she had already spent money because her roommate did not provide the items she had agreed to bring.

If the two roommates want to avoid constant arguments, they need to revisit the original agreement and make the financial responsibilities explicit. Who owns each item? Which purchases are shared? What happens when one person buys something the other was supposed to provide?

The more specific the agreement, the less room there is for assumptions.

OP also has a reasonable reason to protect her own finances. She did not agree to fund a larger lifestyle for her roommate. She agreed to share the cost and use of household essentials.

If the roommate wants a larger sofa for entertaining, she can buy one herself and decide what happens to the smaller sofa afterward.

That is not necessarily petty. It is simply separating a personal preference from a shared necessity.

OP’s wording may have been sharper than necessary, and that is probably the part she is second-guessing.

Still, being blunt after repeatedly being ignored does not automatically make her wrong.

Here's the comments of Reddit users:

Several people argued that the biggest problem was not even the money. It was the pattern.

Sea-Ad9057 − Nta the kitchen is also a cared space

Beach_bum8 − NTA, but this situation won't end well.

CptKUSSCryAllTheTime − NTA. Tell her the kitchen is also a shared space. It would be different if she supplied what she said she would.

Let her know what you spent on the kitchen stuff and tell her you would have that money to spend on a new couch if you hadn’t had to spend...

It might be worth while to try to keep the peace as long as possible

Curious_Aus25 − NTA but don’t buy shared purchases. What happens when one of you moves out? Don’t contribute to her sofa.

You buy your things. She buys hers. Agree to use/share things and pay for cleaning as required. Sounds like it’s going to be an interesting time ahead.

PuzzleString − She can go buy the damn sofa herself. Tell her the small one is exclusively yours, since she didn't contribute to the shared space.

What an entitled "friend" you have. Nta obviously. She's gonna be a nightmare to live with. Looking forward to reading your post in r/badroommates in a few weeks :)

TheLastWord63 − NTA. Will your sofa fit in your room? I would also make sure she had no access to your kitchen items.

Others suggested finding the cheapest viable temporary housing instead of bringing her into the family home.

ThrowRARandomString − Talk about an entitled roommate! Refuse (nicely) again, and point it out. You at least have the advantage of the texts if anyone (mutual friends) ask about the...

Plus she probably won't even be that nice about the sofa and if any accidents happen (like a split drink, etc), she'll, no doubt about it, will *blame* you.

You do you. Also, protect yourself. And for reference, make sure to always get any future situations written in texts.

Popular-Parsnip8911 − NTA. She’s using you OP.

Separate_Pumpkin_256 − It's time to call the experiment on shared expenses a failure. You are right to refuse to continue to pretend it's working.

I would be making plans to find a new roomie situation as soon as it's practical to do so. Expect that you will be losing financially to some degree until...

butterflya82 − NTA. Don’t contribute towards the sofa.

You brought the sofa and if she wants a bigger one then she can get it and also tell her the money you spent on the things she was to...

Final Thoughts

There is no villain-free answer here.

OP’s mother-in-law made financial decisions that brought her to this point, but she is also an elderly woman grieving her husband and facing the terrifying possibility of having nowhere to live.

At the same time, OP and her husband have just bought their first home and are trying to pay their own debts while maintaining a financial safety net. Destroying that stability would not magically solve the underlying problem.

The real lesson is that roommates need more than a verbal promise about who will bring what. They need follow-through.

Otherwise, one person ends up paying for the whole household while the other keeps asking for upgrades.
