She Refuses a Traditional Wedding, and Her Parents Reveal Exactly Why She Made the Right Choice

in Social Issues

Not every bride dreams of a huge ceremony, an elaborate reception, or spending thousands of dollars to satisfy her relatives.

Sometimes, the perfect wedding is simply the one that reflects what the couple actually wants.

OP and her longtime boyfriend decided to get married in Las Vegas during her upcoming 30th birthday trip.

They wanted something small, relaxed, and free from the family drama that had surrounded so many other events in their lives.

Unfortunately, telling OP’s parents about the plan only confirmed her fears.

Her mother criticized the wedding, accused her boyfriend of not being man enough, and then told relatives a completely different version of events.

Her grandfather and uncle soon called OP to question the decision, believing she was being pressured into the marriage.

Just when OP thought the interference could not become more insulting, her mother made a comment about her appearance that pushed her over the edge.

Scroll down to see why OP decided her family would no longer have a place in her wedding plans.

She Refuses a Traditional Wedding, and Her Parents Reveal Exactly Why She Made the Right Choice
not the actual photo

'My S/O and I have decided to get married in Las Vegas because my parents are too difficult. Their reaction has been gold, and is exactly why they won't be...

My boyfriend and I have been together for just over 10 years. We went to

school together and I love our life together now. He showed me what it

meant to be loved unconditionally and that life is not a series of over-the-

top dramas piled on top of each other. Coming from a family where every

day was dramatic and theatrical it was a shock. Growing up I thought

everyone’s life was like mine, and when I left home and found out life

didn’t need to be that hard it was a relief. I posted here a few months ago

about how it doesn’t matter what I do, I’m never good enough for my parents.

I used to think I was a piece of shit, ugly and totally useless, and that was

just who I was and I couldn't change that.

I was a bright and bubbly little girl who turned into an isolated and

depressed teenager. I kept a livejournal between the ages of 12 to 17 and

it's horrific to read now. Nobody knew what was going on with me because

I didn't tell anyone. I didn't tell anyone because I didn't know anything was

wrong. I thought my life was normal. And everyday was just going through

the motions. That's what I thought adulthood was.

My parents narcissism are two different beasts. My dad had affairs with

young girls around 18-21 throughout my life. He was terrible at covering

it, my mum knew and they fought violently a lot. Eventually it got to the

point where he stopped covering it and embraced it openly because he

knew my mum would never leave him at the the time. He would sit with me

when my mum was out, his impressionable teenager daughter, and tell me

how women peaked at 21 and any older they are past thier prime. How it's

easier to get them to do weird sex stuff because they desperately want an

older man to take care of them and they'll do anything. He would tell me as

if he was imparting widsom. He'd say all women really want is a man but

you have to keep them on a tight leash or they turn into bitches. I didn't

think it was weird. I thought my dad was king of the world. My mum and

dad divorced when I was 17 and I moved out when I was 18 to live with my

boyfriend (10 years and still going strong!). Since then I see my dad maybe

twice a year, or he calls me when he wants something. Usually "it's fathers

day. Send me £25 Amazon voucher". And I would. And then a month later

he would accuse me of never sending it, even though I could see it was

redeemed. After the divorce he moved back in with his mum and lives off

her dime to travel and meet women in Asia and either promise them a

dream life in the UK if they stick with him or just pays for prostitutes. On

the off occasion I do see him it's for a few hours for dinner he'll talk about

his life and brag about how amazing it is but never ask about me. He tells

me I'm looking "old and chunky" (I'm 29 and a UK size 12) and that my long

term SO who I own a home with is going to leave me for a younger model.

He called me a fucking idiot for deciding to try vegetarianism for a while in

a restaurant and caused a scene because he was upset I'd been

"brainwashed". He tells me my clothes are ugly and brags about how Asian

girls are petite and submissive (I'm 5ft 10 and have a career and a house

and my SO and I are equal partners). When I was 18 he told me he was sad

because life would be hard for me as I'm not naturally pretty.

But now let's talk about my mum. She was stuck in this abusive relationship

with my dad but this doesn't excuse how she treats me to this day. It

started when I was around 6 or 7 and I started having opinions of the

clothes I was wearing. I didn't want to wear frilly dresses, I wanted to wear

jeans and tshirts so I could play. I desperately wanted a pair of trainers

(sneakers) and she told me only naughty street children wore them. She

forced me to wear an old victorian children's coat to school. I hated it and

the kids at my school made fun of me. I begged for a normal coat and I got

the same comment as I did for the trainers. As I got older I would argue

back and we'd have explosive verbal arguments that climaxed with her

pinning me to the floor and spitting in my face as she told me "you're fat

and you're ugly and I'm embarrassed you're my daughter". I never got an

apology but we rarely fought after that. Instead I got constant passive

aggressive comments and she refused to take me shopping. Kids at school

made fun of me when I was a young teen for not wearing a bra. I hit

puberty young and got large breasts from my dad's side. My mum has small

A cup breasts and would make fun of mine, calling them flabby and would

tell me big boobs never age well. She refused to take.me bra shopping

because my big boobs were because "I was fat". I had C cup boobs when I

was 12 years old but didn't wear a bra until I was 15 which I bought with

change I would find down the sofa over time. It was bougut from a bargain

bin and barely fit as I was too embarrassed to get measured. To this day my

mum ridicules me. Calls me fat and ugly. Tells me she hates my clothes. She

called me embarrassingly fat at her wedding to her new husband. She's

never complimented me but berates me consistently when I see her.

But what's crazy is that I'm not fat, I've never been fat. I'm a very normal

weight, taller than average but happen to have a very voluptuous figure.

DD breasts, 41 inch hips and an apple shaped bum, but a flat stomach. I

enjoy wearing a variety of clothes from jeans to dresses and I like to mix up

my style. My boyfriend loves me and my body and we have a strong

relationship. No one else has ever called me fat and ugly except my own

parents. And outside of this they show a total disinterest in my life. If I

don't make the effort to contact them, they never contact me. And if I

don't contact them for a while, they call me an ungrateful daughter.

Last October I finished 12 months of counselling. I didn't think much of it

going into it but it brought so much clarity. I used to think I was a huge fat

girl with an ugly face and accepted I'd never get a boyfriend and be a line

forever. Anything I accomplished I thought was a fluke. I would never show

off about it to friends and family. My whole life was very discreet because I

was embarrassed. And I thought everyone thought these things when they

looked at me and it was my fault for nothing trying hard enough or being

naturally unlucky. Now I look in the mirror and I see someone totally

different. I see myself. I see a future. And I like me.

Both my parents said my counselling was stupid and I'm making up my

problems. I see now they have thier own problems they won't face. That

they lack introspection. And that it doesn't matter what I do, this is just

who they are. I could write so much more. This is tip of the iceberg.

UPDATE

So my boyfriend and I like to live a discreet life. We both work full time, and

when we get home we like to spend it together, looking after our pets,

watching Netflix and going to the movies. We’re not flashy types by any

means and have worked hard to create a financially and emotionally stable

home. I’m so thankful I found someone when I was still young enough to

show me how life could be. If I had been left with my parents any longer I

don’t know what would of happened to me.

Anyway, we’ve decided to get married. No engagement and no big

wedding plans. We just want to get married. And we’re going to Las Vegas

for my 30th birthday in November with our best friends so we’ve decided

to just do it then. $100 wedding chapel, short fun ceremony and then a

nice meal and night out in LV. Sound perfect. No hassle.

The other reason for doing this is my family will cause drama if I have a real

wedding. My divorced parents can’t be in a room together without

screaming at each other and I’ve got ridiculous family members on both

sides and the whole thing will end in a brawl. They wont be able to be civil

for a day for me, I know this from other recent family events, and after the

way I’ve been treated (RE: link to last post) I don’t think they deserve to

come to my wedding, and that’s that. You can’t change my mind.

So we’ve booked it all and I decided to tell my parents now because I know

it will be more drama if I just do it without warning. Their reactions have

not surprised me, and have in fact reinforced my opinion. I told my mum

and as expected, she was horrified that we would do something “so tacky”

and forgo a beautiful traditional wedding. I explained to her my reasons in

the softest way possible and also said that I just can’t justify spending

thousands on a wedding that ultimately isn’t for me as it’s just not my style.

She told me I was selfish, which I expected and then started saying she was

always planning on giving me loads of money to have my dream wedding

but now I’ve lost the privilege. I told her I never expected that kind of

money from her and I hope she can now spend it on something for herself

instead. She then asked if we could at least have a celebration meal/party

when I get home and I obliged as I was likely planning this anyway. This

immediately made her happy and she started saying how she won’t get to

miss out on HER special day after all. I told her that there would be ground

rules. My boyfriend wouldn’t want the party to be a spectacle or over the

top, and I agree. She then started complaining that my boyfriend was a

wimp who’s to afraid to publicly declare his love for me. I corrected her but

she wasn’t listening. I also told her to be discreet, we were planning on

telling people over the course of the next few weeks. We didn’t want a big

announcement on Facebook or anything like that. She agreed.

A few hours pass and I get TWO separate phone calls. Once from my

grandad, another from my uncle, both to talk about how I shouldn’t stand

for my boyfriend forcing me into a quickie Vegas wedding and he needs to

man up and give me the wedding I’d always been dreaming of. My mum

had told them this fake little narrative in her mind that the only reason she

wasn’t getting the dream wedding she wanted for me is because me

boyfriend wasn’t man enough to give it to me. I corrected them and then

called my mum and made it very clear that this is not the case, and how I

explicitly stated she was not to tell anyone. Especially my grandad, who

was next on my list to tell myself. She “apologized” and asked I give her just

one promise. I asked her what it is and she told me to lose some weight so

she can at least proudly show her friends pictures of her beautiful

daughter on her wedding day. Wow. I’ll gain weight for my wedding just for

that comment.

I called my dad on the phone to tell him. He’s somewhere in Asia chasing

women under 21 (RE: link to last post). And he was very disinterested, not

sure he really listened. He asked what the overall plan was I and explained

we’re going to be in Vegas anyway for my 30th. That’s when he stopped me

and asked if I was getting married before or after I turned 30. I said two

says before. He said “Good girl. No girl of any value gets married for the

first time after 30. This way you can tell people you were 29 when you first

got married without lying”.

S__ew having a party for family and friends when we get back. My family

have no right to be at my wedding. I will take every pleasure in getting

married in Vegas and have the most fun day doing so. And my parents can

just enjoy all the photos I’ll be posting of their “fat 30 year old daughter”

on Facebook. Good riddance.

EDIT: Wow, I was not expecting this to blow up! Thank you for all your

support!! I'm just at work at the moment and posted this on my lunch break

to vent. I'll be home soon so I'm going to try and get to as many comments

and questions as I can. It means the world to me. For a long time when I

told myself I have Nparents I thought it was all in my head and I was

probably just being melodramatic. Finding this sub helping me to see I

wasn't crazy. They really are that awful and I shouldn't take a word they say personally.

A wedding is supposed to mark the beginning of a marriage, not become a stage where someone else’s expectations take over.

For OP, choosing a quiet Las Vegas ceremony was less about avoiding tradition and more about protecting the peaceful life she and her boyfriend had deliberately built.

The most painful part of the story is how quickly her parents turned a personal decision into something about themselves.

Her mother treated the wedding as “her special day,” criticized OP’s partner, then privately told relatives a completely different story about him supposedly forcing her into a cheap ceremony.

Her father’s response was even more revealing: instead of asking whether his daughter was happy, he focused on her age and how she would appear to other people.

After years of being surrounded by family drama, OP was finally trying to make one important decision without drama attached to it and her parents immediately recreated the very chaos she was trying to escape.

There is another way to understand OP’s anger, though.

People raised in highly volatile families can become unusually sensitive to the difference between peace and avoidance.

OP isn’t simply running away from a traditional wedding.

She has experienced enough family conflict to predict that putting everyone in the same room would turn her marriage ceremony into another family confrontation.

Her desire for something small may therefore represent psychological self-protection rather than selfishness.

OP gave her mother information about the wedding, explained her reasoning, and even offered the possibility of a celebration afterward.

Her mother could have been disappointed while still respecting the decision.

Instead, she recruited relatives, invented a narrative about OP’s boyfriend, violated OP’s request for privacy, and finally criticized OP’s body.

None of those reactions make the original wedding choice unreasonable.

In fact, OP’s decision may be one of the healthiest things she has done.

She has spent years learning that love does not have to involve shouting, manipulation, elaborate conflict, or emotional exhaustion.

Her relationship has apparently given her a different model: two people quietly building a stable life together and deciding what makes them happy.

That is why the Vegas ceremony matters. It isn’t “less” of a wedding simply because it costs $100 instead of thousands of dollars.

The meaningful part is the marriage afterward.

OP also does not owe her family a celebration party merely because they want access to the occasion.

If she believes that gathering would recreate the same spectacle she deliberately avoided, canceling it is a reasonable extension of the boundary.

Perhaps the most liberating realization is this: her parents don’t have to understand the wedding for it to be the right wedding for her.

She can let them dislike the photographs, complain about the venue, or mourn the elaborate ceremony they imagined.

None of that changes whose marriage it is.

And after growing up believing life had to be dramatic, choosing an uncomplicated day with the person she loves might be the most meaningful rebellion of all.

Take a look at the comments from fellow users:

These commenters strongly supported OP’s decision to abandon the family-controlled wedding and elope

akelew − She told me I was selfish, which I expected and then started

saying she was always planning on giving me loads of money to have my

dream wedding but now I’ve lost the privilege. Selfish because you wont

throw 'her' dream wedding. /s Good for you op, clearly made the right

choice. Hope you enjoy your elopement ! :D

radiantdarkness − I can confirm that you're doing the best possible thing. If

my husband and I could go back in time, we would have just eloped and

gone on vacation to a beach somewhere far away. My wedding day was

great, but literally nothing but drama every day leading up to it and in the years that followed.

You don't need to prove anything to anyone and f__k her for disrespecting

you and your boyfriend like that. I hope you guys have the BEST time in

Vegas and congratulations in advance!

A major theme was the mother’s claim that OP had “lost the privilege” of financial help because she refused to host the wedding her mother wanted

GKinslayer − I would call mom and tell her you will grant her wish’s, you will

lose some weight before your wedding, a huge amount that will make your

life all the better. The weight is you mom, all you and all your bull s__t,

congrats you convinced me to finally lose the dead weight in my life - YOU.

I will have a party after my wedding and it will also be to celebrate my

family’s future without you in it. Hey that was a great idea mom, got any

more? Oh wait, I no longer care what you say or do.

minimalhoarder − Wow. So many bullets dodged here. I'm sorry but f__k

your mother. What a righteous POS to tell you to lose weight so SHE can

show you off. I hope you have an amazing wedding and amazing life with

the man you love who has taught you that relationships don't have to be

dramatic and anxiety filled. Congratulations.

Several people described weddings where their parents or in-laws dominated decisions, imposed their preferences, or created lasting emotional damage

visionsofsugarplums − Exactly! ! Do not have a party with your family, they

don't deserve you. I was 20 when I got married and still livng at home. My

wedding was pretty much her way 100%.

There was one thing she wanted that I didn't, so I never got around to

getting it and at the rehearsal she said something to the minister about

how I was going to have this thing tomorrow and I rolled my eyes and he

was like "If it's not here today, it's not in the wedding tomorrow" which was perfect.

Because I was rasied the way I was (as you can understand) there was very

little I wanted for myself that day. I got the most important thing to me

because I went to my grandpa and asked him and everything else was just

what everyone else wanted.

I hated my dress (it was my moms) and I felt super ugly that day and not

one person told me how pretty I was or anything. Because I looked so bad

in this thing. All that to say, my husband and I plan on doing a vow renewal

with just us and our kids.

And I am going to buy the wedding dress I have always wanted and I will

look beautiful. I wish we would have eloped and never looked back. The

only reason for the vow renewal is the dress as he hated it on me too. He

wants to give me a better wedding then I had. We don't need decorations or fancy food.

I just wanted to feel pretty and say I do. Don't let your parents mess your

day up! They don't deserve to have that kind of power. Do you think they

would fly to Vegas to be there that day?

cleric3648 − Congrats on doing this your way. Nparents get crazy around

weddings and have a tendency to s__ew things up for everyone by doing

things their way. I had a fight with my NMIL when she kept insisting that

her family should sit with us at the bridal table up front. She kept trying to

make everything about her.

Eventually I won that argument by pointing out that they get one of the up

front tables, and that it would look really weird and asymmetrical having

Wife's whole family on one side and my side would be empty, with my mom

trapped in bed with late stage alzheimer's and my dad not sure if he was

going to show up to the reception.

(Spoiler: He didn't. He left after the wedding pictures were taken, even

though Mom had a nurse for the whole night. He had a booty call to go to. )

Her parents paid a little to help us with the reception, but their help came at a steep price.

They wanted veto power on every decision, even though my wife and I paid

for 80% of the wedding. They also tried to get us to reschedule everything

because "money was tight" for them. We held firm and said no. I would

have lost a few thousand if we rescheduled, and they would have pulled

that same move six months later.

They wanted us to reschedule AFTER the invites were sent out. Eventually,

I repaid them the money they lent us, plus a little more to replace the

bumper on their car. NMIL tried to be passive-aggressive when we moved

from their house and parked their backup car right next to the UHaul van,

blocking us from leaving with the last load of our stuff.

I responded by moving their car. ..with the UHaul van. Always pay for the

insurance on the van. Edit: Slipped up on a name.

Rather than telling OP to abandon having a celebration entirely, these commenters encouraged her to create a wedding experience centered on herself and her fiancé

CopperPegasus − Girl. .. have the party. With friends. And nice members of

hubby-to-be's family, who I am sure will be delighted to be your stand-in

family people for the day. Since you wanted it. Far, far from these buggers.

Then post those pics and the wedding pictures, and they may reap all the

rewards they've earned from missing out on your special party and the

start of your new life. What a bunch of pillocks. To think they walk among us. ..

tinydragonfae78 − I HIGHLY recommend the vegas wedding. My hubby and

I didnit. We got married in a room that looked like a 50s diner. He dressed

like a 50s guy and I was in a poodle skirt. Halloween wedding :-) 10/10

would do it again but only with my hubby :-)

OP had hoped for a simple Vegas wedding with the person she loves, but her parents quickly turned even that private decision into another opportunity for criticism and control.

Her mother spread a false story about the boyfriend, ignored OP’s request for discretion, and even criticized her weight, while her father reduced the milestone to her age.

After years of family drama, OP seems determined to protect the peaceful life she built.

Do you think skipping the family celebration is the right boundary, or should she still give them a chance to celebrate? Share your thoughts below.
