She Told Her New Neighbor to “Stop By Anytime.” He Took It Literally and Started Walking Into Her Home

Moving 1,200 miles away is a pretty big leap, especially when you’re leaving behind a familiar home and starting over somewhere completely new.

For one 55-year-old woman, the move seemed worth it. She, her 54-year-old husband, and her 80-year-old mother-in-law had found what they considered the perfect house.

It had half an acre of land, a screened-in patio, a saltwater pool, and even a separate bungalow where her mother-in-law could have her own space.

The only problem was one of their new neighbors.

'AITA for wanting in impose boundaries on my neighbor?'

My husband (54), my MIL (80) and I (55) just moved out of state 1,200 miles away.

We found the perfect house - 1/2 acre, screened in patio with salt water pool and a separate bungalow for my MIL. Prior to selling our old house but after...

While there, he met several of our new neighbors. One of them told my husband that the previous owner had passed away and he was heartbroken because they were good...

Once we moved to the new home, the neighbor stopped in that very night with his wife to say hi and introduce themselves.

We were all very tired from the drive down, so my husband told them that we were going to get settled in, but to stop by anytime to hang out...

The following evening, they came by again, and went on and on about how the previous owner, who had passed away, always welcomed them into her home,

let them use the pool, let them (or guests of theirs) stay in the bungalow, and followed up all of these stories with pictures of them and their children in...

Since then, the husband randomly stops by unannounced at any time from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., opening the gate to our backyard and the door to our patio and...

At times, he'll invite his wife or kids to join him. Sometimes, we're in the pool, or are having breakfast or winding down to go to bed. One time, my...

I mentioned it to my husband, so we started locking the door to the patio.

Now, my husband and I are flying back home for my family's reunion. My MIL, who is very independent, has zero issue with staying at home for a few days...

I told her to lock the gate while we're away, so he can't just walk into the yard. I told my husband this, and he seemed kind of upset, stating...

So who's TA here? My husband for not wanting to appear unneighborly, me for going behind his back about locking the gate while we're away or our neighbor for taking...

Before the couple had even finished moving in, the woman’s husband traveled to the new property to make some repairs. While he was there, he met several neighbors, including one man who explained that he had been extremely close to the previous owner, who had passed away.

When the couple finally arrived, that neighbor and his wife came over that same evening to introduce themselves. Everyone was exhausted after the long drive, so the husband politely told them they needed some time to settle in, but added that they were welcome to stop by anytime because they wanted to get to know their new neighbors.

It sounded friendly enough.

Unfortunately, the neighbor apparently heard something much more specific.

The next evening, he came back and started telling them stories about the previous owner. She had apparently welcomed him and his family into the house, let them use the pool, and even allowed them or their guests to stay in the bungalow.

He even showed them pictures of his family inside their new home.

The woman initially didn’t think too much of it. She figured the neighbor was grieving a friendship and simply missed the person who had lived there before.

Then he started treating their house like it was still hers.

He began dropping by without warning at almost any hour. Sometimes it was 7 in the morning. Other times it was as late as 11 at night.

He wouldn’t wait at the front door, either.

He would open the backyard gate, walk onto their patio, open the door, and sit down as though he had been invited over.

Sometimes the couple would be eating breakfast. Sometimes they would be relaxing by the pool. Once, they were winding down for the night.

On one occasion, the woman’s mother-in-law had just gotten out of bed and was still in her pajamas. She hadn’t even put her dentures in yet when the neighbor showed up. Understandably, she felt extremely uncomfortable.

The couple eventually started locking the patio door.

But the situation became more concerning when the husband and wife planned to fly back to their old state for a family reunion.

Their mother-in-law was perfectly capable of staying home alone, but she was worried about the neighbor simply letting himself onto the property while they were gone.

The woman suggested that her MIL lock the gate.

Her husband wasn’t happy with the idea.

He pointed out that he had already told the neighbor he could stop by whenever he wanted. He didn’t want to suddenly tell him that he couldn’t come over or make himself look like an unfriendly neighbor.

The woman understood his concern, but she couldn’t shake the feeling that this had gone far beyond normal neighborly behavior.

There is a big difference between saying, “Come over sometime,” and giving someone permission to enter your property whenever they feel like it.

She ultimately told her mother-in-law privately to lock the gate if it made her feel safer.

That meant she had technically gone behind her husband’s back.

And that’s where she started wondering whether she was actually the problem.

Psychologists often describe boundaries as limits that help people communicate what behavior they are comfortable with and what they are not. Psychology Today notes that healthy boundaries are not necessarily about rejecting other people. They help define where one person’s responsibilities, privacy, and personal space end and another person’s begin. (Psychology Today)

That distinction matters here.

The woman isn’t trying to prevent her husband from making friends. She isn’t demanding that the neighbor never visit. She simply wants people to ask before entering their home.

Her husband may have meant his invitation casually, but the neighbor interpreted it literally. Once that became obvious, it was reasonable to clarify the rules.

The situation also becomes more serious because of the swimming pool. The neighbor is entering the property without anyone specifically inviting him, and while he may see himself as a trusted family friend, the homeowners are still responsible for their property.

These are the responses from Reddit users:

Many commenters said the neighbor had crossed a very obvious line and that the husband’s casual invitation did not give him permanent access to their home.

Marriemuffins − NTA your house isn’t a public park walking in unannounced from 7am to 11pm is not “neighbourly”, it’s a boundary stomping. Lock the gate

Smooth-Original-6478 − Your husband is TA for saying people he doesn’t even know are welcome anytime in your shared home. Good fences make good neighbors.

Your husband needs to tell these neighbors they need to be invited over. Their behavior is not good for your entire household. Husband can go visit them at their house...

coastalkid92 − NTA There's a difference between saying "stop by whenever" to encourage neighbourly affection and having a bit of a community whereby you're not strangers to your neighbours, and...

Your MIL is an elderly woman in a new environment by herself and she deserves to feel secure in the home while you two aren't there. Locking the gate is...

missingurtext − NTA for sure. the neighbor took the open invite and ran with it. going behind your husband’s back kinda sucks but protecting your mil while youre out of...

Federal-Ferret-970 − Your home owners insurance may have a get out of jail clause if someone has the ability to gain access to your pool and drowns while your not...

RoyallyOakie − NTA. ..Your husband should worry more about his mother's comfort and less about what the neighbour thinks. You are desperately in need of some boundaries here.

Medium-Arugula3035 − Do you ever consider insurance? If something happens on your property you are liable. Lock the gate! !

Several also pointed out that the husband seemed more concerned about avoiding an uncomfortable conversation than protecting his own family.

Extreme-Manager-8984 − It's not that your husband doesn't want to appear "neighborly", he just doesn't want to deal with the conflict.

Impossible_Sun_9534 − NTA that would drive me nuts having him pop over anytime without an invite.

Jerseygirl2468 − NTA locking the gate is a good idea, and hopefully clues the neighbor in to you not wanting him wandering in freely all the time - and really...

If it doesn't work, your husband is the one who opened the door, he needs to be the one setting the boundary. "We love having friendly and close neighbors, but...

Final Thoughts

There is nothing wrong with being friendly to your neighbors. In fact, having people nearby who look out for each other can be wonderful.

But friendliness still needs boundaries.

The previous owner may have welcomed this neighbor into her home whenever she wanted. That was her choice. The new homeowners are allowed to make different choices.

Sometimes “stop by anytime” needs an expiration date.

Was the woman right to lock the gate, or should she have respected the open invitation her husband originally gave?
