Supervisor Bans Switch On Company TV, Worker Hauls In Massive CRT For Epic Gaming Sessions

Breakrooms exist to give workers a pause from the grind, a spot where screens flicker with reruns or news to unwind the mind. Most supervisors overlook small joys like shared games during downtime, recognizing that brief escapes boost morale without costing a dime.

One employee spotted an opening when the company sat idle. He connected his console for coworkers to join in, only to hear a firm rule against personal use on store property.

Undeterred, he sourced a replacement the very next shift, one that dwarfed the original and demanded its own outlet. Scroll down for the supervisor’s double-take, the Mario Kart showdown that silenced complaints, and Reddit’s cheers for a loophole hauled in from the curb.

An employee hooks up a Switch to the idle breakroom TV for fun, gets banned by the sup, then drags in a massive free CRT from the curb to game bigger and bolder

Supervisor Bans Switch On Company TV, Worker Hauls In Massive CRT For Epic Gaming Sessions
Not the actual photo

"You cant use the company TV for your Switch." Sounds good to me!?

I work for a pretty well-known home improvement store,

and we have a breakroom in the back with a TV

for us to watch programs and sitcoms on our break.

On this particular day, no one was using the TV,

it was turned off and everyone was on their phones,

so I figured there was no harm in plugging in my Switch

and sharing the fun of letting people have a go at it.

While I’m watching people play, my supervisor walks in and sees the setup.

She informs me that “this is the company’s TV,

so you can’t use it for personal entertainment.”

Big bummer, since people were having fun,

but I can’t lose my job, so I pack up my Switch.

That day on my way home from work,

I pass by a house that has a massive old-school CRT TV

out front that they’re giving away for free.

It’s bigger than the TV that we have at my job, and it still works!

The next day I haul this massive TV out of my car and into the breakroom.

I get a few odd looks, but I don’t care.

Too focused on complying with the rules.

I plug this sucker into the wall

right underneath our company TV,

now tiny in comparison to the CRT,

and hook up my Switch to it for people to play.

Supervisor walks in and sees people playing on a bigger monitor.

I’m not using the company TV,

but I am using an even bigger personal TV.

People are playing the Switch and having a good time.

She tries to say something about how I’m blocking the view

or causing disruption in the breakroom,

but the other TV is turned off anyway.

People are watching intensely as two coworkers

are racing around in Mario Kart,

so I don’t really think it was a big deal.

Not sure if I’m gonna get a strike for this or not, but it’ll be worth it if I do,

and I think I can argue that I followed the rules.

Part of me expects that this TV will “mysteriously” disappear,

and that security will have “no footage” of who might’ve taken it,

which will be funny since it’s so big.

But it’s the thought that counts.

Breakroom amenities like televisions exist to foster employee relaxation and camaraderie during unpaid time, yet rigid enforcement of “company property” rules can stifle morale without clear justification.

In this home improvement store, a supervisor barred a worker from connecting a Nintendo Switch to the store TV for group play, citing personal entertainment bans.

The employee’s compliant workaround, hauling in a free curbside CRT television, larger than the original, and setting it up adjacent, adhered literally to the directive while amplifying fun, drawing coworkers into Mario Kart sessions without disrupting operations.

Workplace experts view breaks as essential for productivity.

The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) emphasizes that flexible workplace policies, such as break autonomy and voluntary leisure activities, can improve engagement, especially in high-stress retail settings.

Similarly, research discussed by the Harvard Business Review suggests that shared recreational activities, including team games, can strengthen social bonds and improve collaboration, factors linked to lower turnover and higher engagement in shift-based environments.

The supervisor’s objections, blocking views or disruption, ring hollow when the company TV remained off, and play occurred quietly on personal time.

Safety and policy concerns merit addressing. Electrical loads from personal devices require approval to avoid hazards; OSHA guidelines mandate inspecting plugs and cords for fraying, especially with older CRTs drawing 100–200 watts.

Retailers like Home Depot prohibit unvetted electronics to prevent liability, yet many permit them if not straining outlets. For workers, document permissions via email: propose the setup, highlighting morale gains.

If denied, suggest company-funded consoles; Nintendo Switches cost $300, yielding ROI through retention. Supervisors should draft clear guidelines: allow HDMI devices with IT checks, or provide gaming systems to compete with rivals offering ping-pong or arcades.

This clever compliance exposed policy absurdity, turning a restriction into enrichment. Progressive managers embrace such initiatives; resistant ones risk disengagement.

Ultimately, breaks recharge staff, facilitate joy within bounds for a thriving store.

The CRT’s potential “disappearance” underscores pettiness; transparency via footage requests builds accountability. Invest in people, not just tools.

Here’s what the community had to contribute:
