The Baby-Sitters Club is going out of business. The family comedy-drama show based on Ann M. Martin’s blockbuster novels will not be renewed by Netflix for a third season.
The Baby-Sitters Club’s plot
The sitcom depicts the camaraderie and escapades of 7 friends as they launch their own babysitting service in Stoneybrook, Connecticut: Kristy, Claudia, Stacey, Mary Anne, Dawn, Jessi, and Mallory. With both of its seasons receiving a perfect rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it continues to be one of the best-reviewed television shows. The show has not been successful in drawing a large audience despite growing a fan base. The eight-episode Season 2, which debuted on October 11, fell outside of Nielsen’s Top 10 weekly streaming rankings and was only at No. 9 for one week in the Netflix Top 10.
The Baby-Sitters Club’s cast
The Baby-Sitters Club was created by Rachel Shukert, who also served as showrunner. Sophie Grace played Kristy, Momona Tamada played Claudia, Shay Rudolph played Stacey, Malia Baker played Mary Anne, Xochitl Gomez played Dawn (Kyndra Sanchez replaced her in Season 2), Anais Lee played Jessi, and Vivian Watson played Mallory. Alicia Silverstone and Mark Feuerstein also appeared.
Shukert said “I have wanted to be a part of the world Ann M. Martin created since I was 7 years old, and for two amazing seasons I actually got to be. It was a dream come true. Although I am heartbroken not to be returning to Stoneybrook for 20 more seasons, I am so proud of the incredible show our amazing cast and crew created and the way it brought joy and comfort to so many when they needed it most. Thank you to Walden Media and to Netflix for giving us the opportunity to introduce Kristy, Claudia, Stacey, Mary Anne, Dawn, Jessi, and Mallory to a new generation of fans who I know will love them as much as we do for years to come.”
Michael De Luca, Lucy Kitada, Frank Smith, Naia Cucukov, and Ben Forrer, together with Shukert and Lucia Aniello of Walden Media, served as executive producers of the show.
“We are incredibly grateful for Netflix’s vision and support in bringing the world of The Babysitters Club to life. Though we are saddened the series has come to an end, we look forward to future opportunities to share the legacy of Ann M Martin’s beloved work with new audiences.” Smith said.
