The Father Who Was Never There Came Back for $2,000. She Said No, and Didn’t Look Back

in Social Issues

Some relationships don’t end with a dramatic goodbye. They fade slowly, through absence, broken promises, and moments when someone should have shown up but didn’t.

For one woman, her relationship with her father was never really a relationship at all.

He wasn’t there when she was a child. Not when she was struggling, not when she was hungry, not when she needed stability. She grew up in chaos, with an abusive, addicted mother, bouncing between shelters, trying to survive.

The person who stepped in wasn’t him.

It was her grandmother.

And years later, when that same grandmother passed away, her father reappeared. Not to reconnect. Not to repair anything.

But to ask her husband for money.

'AITA for refusing to help my father financially when he came to the US for his mother’s funeral and asked my husband for $2,000?'

AITA for refusing to help my absent father who asked my husband for $2,000?

I only met my father in 7th grade. He is a musician in Europe and was never present. I grew up with a d__g addicted abusive mother. We were homeless...

The painful irony is that the funeral that brought him here was for his mother, who actually raised me.

She drove me to college and helped pay daycare for my daughter so I could finish school as a single mom. She did everything he refused to do.

He promised to pay my tuition and strung me along for months until I got a scholarship.

He never attended my college graduation where I graduated magna c__ laude even though I sent him the link during COVID.

When I needed $300 to keep my belongings from being sold he said he was on tour. When I lost my job and my car got repossessed he left me...

He once confirmed publicly he only claims one daughter and it is not me. I told him to stay away from my life and he agreed.

The man who actually showed up was my now husband. Before we married he helped me financially as a single mom, gave me money toward a new car after the...

My father initially disliked my now husband assuming he wanted a green card, not knowing my now husband already had one.

His opinion only changed when he found out my now husband played semi pro soccer and his brother plays for Manchester United. He has never met my children.

Now he approached my husband privately asking for $2,000 for a flight home and his mortgage. My husband redirected him to me. I said no.

People say honor thy father. But 1 Timothy 5:8 says a man who does not provide for his family has denied the faith. Galatians 6:7 says whatever a man sows...

Proverbs 21:13 says whoever ignores the cry of the poor will also cry out and not be answered. Matthew 10:16 says be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.. Honor...

A Lifetime of Absence

She didn’t even meet her father until she was in seventh grade.

By then, the damage wasn’t just emotional. It was practical. He hadn’t provided support, stability, or even consistent presence. While she struggled through homelessness and hardship, he lived his life as a musician in Europe, distant in every sense of the word.

And it didn’t change as she got older.

He promised to pay for her tuition, then disappeared until she secured a scholarship on her own. He missed her college graduation, despite being invited. When she needed just a few hundred dollars to keep her belongings from being sold, he was unavailable.

When she lost her job and her car, he didn’t respond at all.

At one point, he even publicly stated that he only claimed one daughter, and it wasn’t her.

That kind of statement doesn’t just hurt. It defines the relationship.

Or in this case, the lack of one.

The Person Who Actually Showed Up

While her father stayed absent, someone else stepped in.

Her now husband.

Before they were even married, he supported her financially, helped her rebuild after losing her car, and became a steady presence not just for her, but for her child.

He did what her father never did.

He showed up.

Which makes what happened next even more jarring.

The Request That Crossed a Line

After years of distance, her father reached out. Not to her, but to her husband. Privately.

He asked for $2,000. For a flight home. For his mortgage.

It wasn’t a conversation. It was a request, directed at the person he now saw as having resources.

Her husband didn’t engage. He redirected him back to her.

And she said no.

Not angrily. Not dramatically.

Just no.

Why This Wasn’t a Simple Decision, But a Clear One

On the surface, some people might frame this as a moral dilemma. A parent in need. A child who could help.

But context matters.

This wasn’t a father who had been present and supportive, now facing hardship. This was someone who had consistently chosen not to be involved, even when his child was in crisis.

Family dynamics like this are often discussed in terms of boundaries. The American Psychological Association notes that adults who experienced neglect or inconsistent caregiving often need to establish firm boundaries later in life to protect their emotional and financial well-being.

That’s what this was.

Not revenge. Not punishment.

A boundary.

The Weight of “Obligation”

There’s a phrase people like to use in situations like this. “You only get one father.” Or “Honor thy father.”

But those ideas assume something important.

That the role was fulfilled.

Respect isn’t built on biology alone. It’s built on actions. On presence. On care given when it was needed.

And in this case, those things were missing.

So when he asked for help, it didn’t feel like a family obligation. It felt like a stranger asking for money.

Maybe even less than that, because a stranger wouldn’t come with years of unresolved history.

These are the responses from Reddit users:

Many people pointed out that being a parent is more than a title. It’s a responsibility, one he repeatedly failed to meet.

CraterBud − NTA, but I really see no need for the bible stuff. An irresponsible person is not worth your time or money.

Edit: Thank you very much for my giving my very first award on this platform. I'm very appreciative 🙂‍↕️

No-Being4681 − NTA.   You own him nothing. To be honoured as a father you need to be a father and he wasn't a father for you.

He would probably leave you on your own again if you would need his help some day even after giving him money now.

Leather_Persimmon489 − NTA. He only has one daughter and it's not you

Latter-Wait-8377 − NTA! dont ever think you are wrong in this situation, who cares if he is grieving.

He publicly said you're not his child, if he is having financial problems that is on him not you.

You are grieving too, you have healed an let go of the life you wish you had with this man.

He may biologically be your father but truth is that's it he is nothing more than the sperm that helped create you. You dont owe him a cent.

Others focused on the timing and the method, reaching out to her husband instead of her, which felt manipulative and opportunistic.

PDK112 − NTA. Add "Do unto others as they have done unto you. " Treat him the same way he treated you. You owe him nothing. The only thing he...

Trevena_Ice − NTA. This guy was never your father. He still isn't but he thinks that your wealthy husband is someone he can use.

If your husband sends him any money, your "father" will come back any chance he got to get more money and having a sob story ready. So don't give him...

Raven_Winter18 − I know this is not going to happen but as a Europian (Italy) I really would like to know the name of this musician

so I can delete him from my streaming services. If he acts like this with his child, he def doesn't deserve my money!

GNU_PTerry − NTA, you just gave him back everything he gave you with interest

Some responses were blunt. If he didn’t act like a father, he doesn’t get treated like one now.

CaptainFartHole − NTA. Tell him he can take it out of the thousands he said he would give you. You owe him nothing.

milkglassfem − NTA. “Honor thy father” gets real shaky when the man in question barely acted like one, and going to your husband for money behind your back was grimy...

He left you hungry, homeless, and ignored, now suddenly family matters because he needs $2k, yeah no.

There’s a difference between forgiveness and access.

You can move on from the past without reopening the door to it.

She built a life without him. Found support elsewhere. Created stability where there wasn’t any before.

And when he came back, not to reconnect, but to take, she made a choice that reflected everything she had learned.

Sometimes, the healthiest thing you can say isn’t complicated.
