Eve Meyer, retiring after 30 years as the executive director of San Francisco Suicide Prevention, was honored at the Heroes of Nonprofit Luncheon on February 9. Her journey has been profoundly influenced by her family’s harrowing history of survival during World War II. Born to Jewish parents who fled Nazi Germany, Meyer’s early life was shaped by incredible acts of resilience.

Her father, once a pediatrician in Berlin, led the family through dangerous escapes and life-threatening moments that shaped not only her upbringing but also her life’s work. These experiences influenced Meyer’s dedication to her profession, where she spent decades rescuing people in moments of despair.

Her story is not just one of survival but of transformation, as she turned her family’s struggles into a lifelong commitment to helping others. This journey shows how personal history can lead to a life dedicated to compassion and saving lives.

#1. A Family’s Struggle for Survival

Meyer’s family history traces back to her father, a pediatrician and head of the public health department in Berlin. When the Nazis came to power, they were persecuted as Jews, forcing them to flee.

Her family — including her grandmother, father, mother, sister, and brother — escaped to Belgium. While there, tragedy struck as Meyer’s sister passed away under unknown circumstances.

The surviving members were soon captured and taken to a concentration camp in Southern France. However, determined to survive, they managed to escape after several months and made their way to the Spanish border.

#2. A Border Guard’s Compassion

Upon reaching the Spanish border, the family faced another life-threatening challenge.

A guard stopped them, declaring that their papers were not in order and that they must return to France. In a desperate act, Meyer’s mother, father, and grandmother, holding her brother’s hand, began walking into the sea.

The sight of this moved the guard so deeply—particularly hearing Meyer’s brother scream—that he allowed them to cross the border into Spain.

This small act of compassion marked a turning point in their journey. From Spain, they boarded the last boat leaving Cadiz and finally reached safety in the United States.

#3. Building a New Life in America

Once in the U.S., Meyer’s father found work as a clinical director at state-run mental health facilities.

These roles were often filled by immigrants, as American officials believed European doctors had unique expertise, especially those with German accents.

Though underpaid and frequently relocated, Meyer’s father persevered. He eventually became a central figure in the mental health care system, which undoubtedly influenced Eve’s later career.

#4. A Lifelong Commitment to Saving Lives

Meyer’s upbringing, marked by her family’s survival and her father’s dedication to mental health care, played a critical role in shaping her own career path.

Her brother became a psychiatrist, teaching at the University of Chicago, while Meyer herself entered the field of health administration and social work.

For the past 30 years, she has devoted herself to helping individuals at their most vulnerable moments, rescuing those contemplating suicide.

Her leadership at San Francisco Suicide Prevention has saved countless lives, making her a true hero in the world of mental health advocacy.

Eve Meyer’s life story is one of resilience and compassion, shaped by her family’s near-death experiences and her father’s work in mental health.

Her personal history laid the foundation for a lifelong career in helping others, and her legacy will continue through the countless lives she has touched during her 30 years of service.
