Eternals contains credits scenes, just as practically every other movie in the MCU. Similar to a number of those stingers, you might not have understood what was going on in those moments if you aren’t familiar with Marvel Comics canon. We can clear up any confusion you may have had regarding the meaning of those post-credits sequences.
Let us introduce you to Pip and Eros
Angelina Jolie’s Thena, Barry Keoghan’s Druig and Lauren Ridloff’s Makkari are on the quest to inform the rest of the Eternals around the universe that they were nothing more than the puppets to propagate Celestials by destroying the worlds populated with humanity the Eternals vowed to take care of. Nonetheless, the group are perplexed about the reason they haven’t received any information from the Eternals back on Earth, as they have no idea that their Earthbound fellows have been summoned by Arishem to account for their choice to halt the emergence of Tiamut. It is at this moment that they receive some unanticipated guests.
The first guest is Pip the Troll, voiced by Patton Oswalt, who, in the comic, collaborated with Will Poulter’s Adam Warlock, a character who is set to be presented in Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3, to battle the Magus. Pip eventually cooperated with Adam and Gamora after being injured by Thanos, aiding Thanos, just to be abandoned by the Mad Titan. In addition to having superhuman strength, Pip also has the ability to teleport and locate anywhere in the world. This is how he and Eros wound up on the Domo. In the movie Eternals, he serves as a type of herald for Harry Styles‘ Eros, who identifies as Thanos’ sibling.
Eros, being the youngest child of the Eternals A’Lars and Sui-San, is also acknowledged as “Starfox” in the comics. Compared to Thanos, Eros was surprisingly different, being a fun-loving womanizer. When Thanos declared an assault on Titan in the comic version, killing their mom, Eros was forced to team up with some of Titan’s remainders to fight Thanos, and he ultimately joined forces with Captain Mar-Vell and the Avengers. Since that moment, his comic history has become somewhat muddled, and because he has the Eternals blood, he also possesses a ton of strengths and abilities. However, as commonly seen in the MCU, nearly all of these powers are not brought from the comic version because it could grant the character an excessive amount of abilities and exposition.
However, it’s clear from Styles’ casting that they intend to maintain the character’s mentality of being somewhat carefree and possibly a womanizer. In the comic version, the character was initially named Eron, but he then got his name altered to Eros when he expressed his enthusiasm for women. If you don’t intend to keep the component of the heartthrob’s character in which everybody needs him, do not offer him the role. Furthermore, what’s Eros’ broader purpose when he proposes to the Eternals his aid in the credits scene? And what does it signify that the Thanos family tree is now growing out more branches? It is reasonable to presume that Thanos’ brother and Eros is going to return in an Eternals sequel.
Rises of The Black Knight
In the climactic moments of Eternals, Kit Harrington’s Dane Whitman expresses his desire for no further secrets to exist between him and Gemma Chan’s Sersi. He claims to have his own secrets despite her statement that she has nothing to hide from him. Before Dane can reveal his secrets to her, however, Kumail Nanjiani’s Kingo and Brian Tyree Henry’s Phastos are both beamed off Earth by Prime Celestial Arishem to give an account of their choice to destroy a Celestial in order to preserve Earth.
We watch as Dane inspects a blade with a Latin engraving when the credits are about to close. The blade appears to respond to Dane as he reaches for it. Before he can progress further, a deep voice from off-screen inquires about his desire to move forward with his ideas.
Thus, what are the meanings of all these things? In fact, Dane Whitman is Black Knight in the comic version, being the third one to assume this identity, after the first Black Knight existed in the time of King Arthur, and Nathan Garrett, his uncle’s villainous Black Knight version. Dane received the persona and equipment from his uncle after he was beaten by Iron Man. Dane is a protagonist who has been a part of the Avengers, Defenders, the Heroes for Hire, New Excalibur, MI-13 and other teams. However, similar to many Marvel superheroes, he has a troubled past that we won’t delve into here.
What does all of this entail for the MCU? Not much, other than the fact that the blade possesses exceptional abilities in this version and that Dane, who played Sersi‘s lover in Eternals, is possibly going to join the battle in upcoming Marvel films. Additionally, whose voice did “Sure you’re ready for that, Mr. Whitman?” come from? In response to a fan question, filmmaker Chloé Zhao revealed that Mahershala Ali, who would portray Blade in a future revival of the vampire-hunting superhero, is the one who speaks. Although the release date for the Blade film is unknown, it appears that this will serve as his brief introduction to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
