TSA Asks Passenger To Go Through Body Scanner, He Chooses A Smarter And Sarcastic Alternative

Airport security is designed to keep us safe, but sometimes the process can feel like overkill. For most travelers, a pat-down or a quick scan is just part of the journey, even if it’s inconvenient.

One Redditor shared a story from a U.S. airport that pushed their patience to the limit. After clearing a metal detector and submitting to a detailed pat-down, they were flagged for a “random” body scan.

When they questioned the need for another check so soon after the first, the TSA agent wasn’t having it, demanding they choose between the scanner and another pat-down.

Opting for the latter, they faced the same agent who’d just searched them. The second pat-down felt more like a power play than a necessity. Was their response out of line? Keep reading to find out how this tense moment played out.

One traveler, ordered into a body scanner after a pat-down, cheekily requested another pat-down from the same TSA agent

You've been randomly selected?

This happened about 3 years ago while going through an airport in the U.S.

I walked through the metal detector, something must have beeped and they needed to pat me down.

After a thorough pat down, I put my shoes on and started to walk over to grab my bag.

A TSA agent stops me and says, "you've been randomly selected, please step into the body scanner."

I was polite, but said that I really didn't want to get into the body scanner, and asked if there was another way.

The agent said that I could get a pat down.

I said, well, I just got a pat down, so...

They angrily told me to pick an option!

So, I took two steps backwards, to the woman who had patted me down 30 seconds ago and spread 'em... again.

While she was patting me down I asked her if she found anything new.

She stared daggers at me but let me go.

The traveler’s encounter at TSA security, where he faced a second screening labeled “randomly selected” immediately after a thorough pat-down, exemplifies frustrations with redundant procedures that erode passenger trust.

TSA employs layered security, including metal detectors, advanced imaging technology (AIT) scanners, pat-downs, and random secondary checks to resolve alarms or as unpredictable measures.

Pat-downs occur if technology alarms, for opt-outs from AIT, or randomly, but policies allow opting for pat-downs instead of scanners, often leading to repeated searches if initial alarms persist.

The traveler’s compliance, requesting and receiving another pat-down, highlights how literal adherence to rules can expose procedural absurdities, a tactic echoed in passenger anecdotes of similar redundancies.

Such experiences fuel complaints about inefficiency and overreach.

TSA’s Secure Flight program flags passengers via SSSS (Secondary Security Screening Selection) on boarding passes for enhanced checks, blending risk-based analysis with randomness to deter threats.

While undisclosed algorithms prevent exploitation, factors like travel patterns or name matches trigger selections, even for PreCheck holders.

A 2023 Senate report confirmed most SSSS cases are random, yet passengers report frequent “random” flags, prompting redress requests via DHS TRIP.

Passengers have rights during screening: request same-gender officers, private rooms with witnesses, glove changes, and procedure explanations. Refusal may bar boarding, but polite assertions prevent escalation.

Enroll in TSA PreCheck/Global Entry to minimize checks, and check boarding passes for SSSS early. File complaints via the TSA’s website for investigations. TSA aims to balance security and efficiency, but redundancies like this undermine confidence.

Travelers benefit from preparation, arriving early, know rights, and agencies from clearer communication to reduce friction.

Here’s the comments of Reddit users:

These Redditors shared cheeky TSA retaliation stories, from moans to bold undressing

eb_straitvibin − I fly for business, and I’ve been randomly selected a few times.

It’s never been a big deal, except one time.

I have precheck, so I go through a metal detector.

It beeps for the “randomly selected,” so I go through the body scanner. It’s clean.

I go to get my backpack, and it’s been pulled for additional screening.

After that, the TSA tells me I need to be patted down because a swab test on my hands failed.

So, at this point, I’m angry, and wait for it to be mid-patdown, right around the waist, and just let out the littlest of moans.

The TSA guy looked like he’d been hit with a brick. I laughed.

HeyRiks − I don't remember where I read it, but I'll always remember the stealth boner TSA story.

Basically, the guy got it up and tucked it underneath the rubber band on the leg of his underwear.

In comes the TSA guy and his patdown.

He finds a suspicious hidden bump and asks what it is. Well... it’s a penis.

"Sir, why do you have an erection at a security checkpoint?"

"I just love a man in uniform and you grab me so firmly yet so gently."

I don't know how many shades of red a single person can turn at the same time,

but this was always my favorite retaliation for passengers always getting their balls fondled.

Theskullcracker − Protip for guys, don’t wear underwear.

I constantly get “randomly selected,” so I’ve started wearing gym shorts when I fly.

When they pat me down, I give myself a little hip shake and make eye contact with them as they touch me.

The best part is most of these guys are glorified mall cops.

Watching Mr. Macho cringe is one of the best feelings.

These Redditors vented about TSA misjudgments, like targeting spice blends or lone travelers

Violetcalla − TSA pulled me aside the other day and asked me what some item in my bag was that was circled on the x-ray.

I can't read those damn things, so I answered, "I don't know. Maybe makeup?"

Which was apparently the worst answer, because then it became them accusing me of not knowing what was in my bag.

The item in question was a bottle of a spice blend I purchased.

FourFurryCats − I was "randomly selected" for an enhanced pat-down at a Canadian airport.

This wasn't one of the big, large cosmopolitan airports, it was in the Northwest Territories.

I put my bag through the x-ray and stepped through the scanner. Nothing beeps or goes off.

I get informed that I have been "randomly selected" for an enhanced screening.

I look around me and see that I'm the only one currently going through security at that time.

These users criticized frequent “random” selections as pointless overreach

shamelessseamus − I have been "randomly selected" every time I have flown. It's b__lshit.

Absolute_Peril − I don't fly anymore, cause apparently I get chosen 100% of the time, sometimes multiple times.

Nope, no bombs. Still just my dirty underwear.

Koker93 − There is nothing the TSA does that makes life any more secure than what they were doing prior to 9/11.

They fail 80% of the time. I don't get why they have to make everyone miserable for such a s__t outcome.

The ONLY reason people don't push back at their stupid requests is because they hold the power to ruin your vacation.

These commenters offered practical tips, like checking “SSSS” codes or demanding glove changes

sveltesvelte − Note: You can tell if you are randomly selected before you even go through security

if there's an "SSSS" on your boarding pass, whether it's physical or on your phone.

PortableCougar − Make them change their gloves before touching you or your belongings.

Two reasons: 1. Their gloves touch everyone in line in front of you and all their stuff. Gross.

2. Take a little bit of power back while your 4th amendment rights get temporarily withdrawn.

These Redditors highlighted absurd TSA power trips, from weapon checks to language biases

ArcticSaint − For my second tour to Iraq, we flew on a chartered flight.

We had a layover in Maine to change planes.

For some reason we had to go through security to get to the other section of the airport.

And we had to go through the detectors. Regulations or something.

The thing is — it was a company of infantry Marines.

We all had our personal weapons.

So I go through the detector and sure as s__t — beep beep.

The poor TSA guy starts running a detector wand up and down me.

While I’m holding an M249 Machine Gun. I said, “Looking for a knife?”

DohaVIP − I was leaving the US after a vacation in Florida in 2016 with my wife and child.

The TSA guy was talking with my wife, and when I told him she does not speak English, he didn’t really like it.

He kept on “aggressively” saying things and still directing his speech to her,

asking stuff without talking to me, so I could translate.

I was really annoyed at how obviously r__ist he was looking at us.

And the funny part was, his Indian accent was very strong,

and he still didn’t like the fact that a tourist didn’t speak English very well lol.

This traveler’s double pat-down turned a TSA power play into a witty win, leaving the agent red-faced. Was their cheeky move a genius jab, or should they have just scanned and moved on?

Did the TSA’s rigid rules deserve the sass, or was it just protocol? Share your thoughts below. Would you pull a second pat-down or breeze through the scanner?
