Wife Plans Every Family Event for 27 Years, Then Refuses to Get Husband’s Passport Too

by Leona Pham

in Social Issues

Family events often require far more work than simply showing up, especially when one person is expected to handle every gift, reservation, and travel detail.

Over time, that invisible labor can become exhausting when the effort is barely noticed or appreciated.

The original poster (OP) has spent years organizing trips and buying presents for her husband’s grandchildren, despite feeling mostly ignored by them.

When the third granddaughter announced a destination wedding, OP reminded her husband that he would need a passport and even researched the application process for him.

However, he refused to provide information from his previous marriage and made no effort to move things forward.

With flights and accommodations likely to cost thousands, OP has decided she will no longer manage the entire trip alone.

Read on to see whether others thought she was justified in stepping back.

Woman feels frustrated after years of arranging family events

'Destination wedding for husband’s grand-daughter, he won’t do anything to get his passport?'

Been married to my second husband for 27 years. He has two kids who I

really like and get along with. One daughter has 4 daughters who are a bit

spoiled. I made sure To give the grand-daughters nice presents for their

graduation gifts and have always been the ”nice step-grandma who is

pretty much ignored by the grandkids”. My husband does zero work on any

gift giving or travel arranging when we have attended any of their events.

That’s all left up to me.

we attended the weddings of the first 2 grand-daughters, both of which

were about 3 hours away. I arranged the trip, bought and wrapped the gifts

and bought cards, we attended the event and I was again the “nice step-

grandma who is pretty much ignored by the grandkids”.

‘About 4 months ago we received a “save the date” card, letting us know

that the 3rd grand-daughter will be getting married in another country, in

mid-2025. I have a passport but husband does not. I told him he will need

to get a passport to attend this. He’s done nothing. A few weeks ago I

asked if he really wanted to go to this, and he said yes. I reminded him that

he would need a passport. So I went online to see what he needed to get

that. One item was the date of divorce from his prior wife. He said he

“wasn’t going to get into that”. I said okay and dropped the whole issue. I

had been looking at airline flights and the tickets would have cost about

$2,000 for both of us. The hotel would be another $1,000 (all inclusive Place).

The invite for the wedding is taped to the front Of the fridge and I am not

going to bring this up again. if he asks, I will let him know that if he actually

gets off his b__t and gets his passport I will make travel arrangements.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that the wedding is on a Wednesday, which

means we would have to fly out Tuesday, and fly back Thursday. I cannot

believe she chose Wednesday for her wedding day.

EDIT/UPDATE: hey thanks everyone for all the interesting comments! As

you can tell, there’s more going on than just the wedding. I will be sure to

post an update when he completely fails to do anything to go to the

wedding, and therefore we don’t go.

Sometimes resentment is not really about one passport, one wedding, or one unfinished task.

It grows after years of one partner becoming the planner, organizer, reminder system, gift buyer, and social coordinator while the other simply arrives after everything has been handled.

Eventually, stepping back can feel less like stubbornness and more like refusing to continue carrying responsibility for another capable adult.

OP has spent years arranging travel, purchasing and wrapping gifts, remembering important events, and maintaining connections with grandchildren who barely acknowledge her.

Her husband apparently wants to attend this destination wedding, but wanting to attend is not the same as taking the steps required to get there.

He has been reminded repeatedly that he needs a passport, yet when OP researched the process and encountered a question only he could answer, he refused to engage.

His comment that he was “not going to get into” his divorce date effectively ended the application process while leaving OP with the unspoken expectation that she would somehow solve it anyway.

That dynamic explains why she has placed the invitation on the refrigerator and stopped reminding him.

She is not preventing him from attending. She is allowing his own inaction to produce its natural consequence.

Research on invisible household labor describes the mental work involved in anticipating needs, organizing schedules, remembering obligations, and ensuring tasks are completed.

One study of married and partnered women found that disproportionate responsibility for household management was associated with role overload, reduced personal well-being, and lower relationship satisfaction.

Although the study focused mainly on mothers with dependent children, the concept applies here.

OP is doing more than purchasing plane tickets.

She is carrying the entire cognitive process: noticing the passport problem, researching requirements, tracking dates, estimating costs, and anticipating what will happen if nothing is done.

Her husband gets to say that he wants to attend while she bears the labor of turning that preference into reality.

There may be legitimate reasons he avoids discussing his previous divorce.

Perhaps the memory is uncomfortable, he lacks the records, or administrative tasks overwhelm him.

However, an explanation would not transfer responsibility to OP.

At 27 years into a marriage, helping a spouse is reasonable; functioning as their unpaid travel manager indefinitely is not.

OP’s current boundary is appropriate: if he obtains the passport, she can decide whether she still wishes to arrange the trip.

She might also reasonably require him to participate in booking flights, confirming the hotel, budgeting for the expense, and preparing the gift.

The Wednesday date may be inconvenient, but that is secondary to whether he will perform even the first necessary task.

If he misses the wedding, the honest explanation is not that OP refused to take him.

It is that he knew what was required and chose not to do it.

Adults are allowed to experience the consequences of their own passivity, even when someone else has spent decades rescuing them from those consequences.

Here’s the comments of users:

These commenters advised informing the daughter that attendance depends entirely on the husband getting his passport

Tiny_Cauliflower_618 − Tell the relevant daughter that her dad doesn't

have a passport, and at present he has decided not to apply for one; you

just want to give her a heads up so she's aware of the situation, as you

wouldn't like her daughter to be disappointed.

You've tried to help him fill out the forms, but when it got to the divorce

date bit he just decided he wasn't going to continue. If you don't have a

relationship with her, then tbh, not your problem not your monkeys. He's

not a baby, or severely disabled, ergo he has to apply for his own passport. Also.

.. Idk what the laws are where you are lol, but you have seen proof he's

divorced right? Because. .. Fine I have no idea what date my divorce went

through, but I do have the printed out paperwork in my drawer, and I'd just

look it up. This is some bizarre avoidance lol and it would give me the willies NGL.

misstiff1971 − Make sure you let his daughter and grandchild know that

attendance hinges on if your husband decides to get his passport. As of

now, he has made no efforts.

LowZookeepergame6593 − Sounds like you all aren’t going. I would let

your DIL know now so she can talk to her dad about it, but make it clear you

have done everything you can to encourage him to get his passport.

These commenters said the responsibility now belongs to the husband and his daughter, not OP

kacsf75 − Let the daughter and granddaughter handle this. You did what you could

Listen-to-Mom − I would let his daughter deal with it. Then she knows he’s

not getting a passport, making reservations, etc. , he won’t be attending.

Longjumping_Echo5510 − Ball is in his court. Just give him a friendly

reminder that you are booking nothing until he has his passport in his hand

and every day that passes the travel expenses can raise in price.

These commenters encouraged OP to stop organizing gifts, travel, and family obligations for people who do not appreciate her

throwRA094532 − Just stop. Don’t even send a card to them. Don’t bring

up the wedding again. Give your husband a simple heads up: «  I reflected

on a lot of things. I noticed that if it wasn’t for me, your family wouldn’t get

any gift and we wouldn’t never see them.

You never asked me to do this of course but in the end, they ignore me and

they praise you. I am done doing this. I won’t organize trips or gift for your

family, this includes the incoming wedding. If you want to go, you will have

to organize everything properly and within budget.

Tell your daughter you might not come because of a passport issue so she

has a heads up. »

princessofperky − Stop doing all the things for people who don't care

about you. Seriously. It's ok if he looks bad in front of his kids. Maybe give

the daughter a heads up but after all these years stop. And honestly your

husband sounds kinda useless too.

Think-Salad-8186 − Stand your ground! It sounds like your family, including

your husband, do not comprehend (or refuse to comprehend) how much

you do for them, and seem very ungreatful despite your efforts. I think this

situation is perfect for you to demonstrate how much you organise for

family events and should hopefully make them respect you more. As for

your husband?

Keep making him arrange his own things! Good luck.

These commenters suspected the husband’s indifference may explain his weak relationships with his children and grandchildren

90sBuffetSoftServe − I would bet money that the reason the grandkids

consider you nice but do not have a more meaningful relationship with you

is due to his overall indifference as a grandfather (and maybe father).

True-Specialist935 − That's so sad. As they say, the opposite of love is

indifference.

After years of arranging trips, buying gifts, and showing up for her step-grandchildren, OP finally stopped carrying the entire responsibility alone.

The passport issue may seem small, but it represents a bigger pattern of one partner doing all the planning while the other simply agrees to attend.

Some may feel OP should push harder to make the family event happen, while others believe it’s fair to step back and let her husband take responsibility.

Do you think OP is being reasonable by leaving the decision in his hands, or should she make one more effort to get him involved?
