Woman Bans Sister From Her Apartment After She Gives Away Her Expensive Skincare

A woman sets a firm boundary after her sister repeatedly uses and gives away expensive skincare products despite being told to stop.

This Redditor explains that she has sensitive skin and spent years finding products that work without causing painful reactions. After noticing her skincare disappearing, she discovered her sister had been using it without permission.

Even after being asked to stop and being provided with separate guest products, her sister continued and eventually gave away part of a costly treatment cream to a friend. Feeling that the issue was no longer about skincare but about ignoring her boundaries, she decided her sister was no longer welcome in her apartment.

'AIW for banning my sister from my apartment after she gave my skincare products to her friend?'

I have extremely sensitive skin and recurring dermatitis,

so after years of painful trial and error I finally found a routine that doesnt leave my face burning or covered in dry patches.

Most of the products are fragrance-free and fairly expensive, including a $95 treatment cream that I have to order online.

I keep everything together in a small tray in my bathroom,

and I replace each item on a schedule because I cant just grab random products from a drugstore if I run out.

My younger sister visits me pretty often. A few months ago I noticed my cleanser and moisturizer were disappearing much faster than usual.

She admitted she had been using them whenever she stayed over because she “liked how they felt.”

I told her clearly that I needed her to stop. I even put regular guest products in the bathroom so she would have something else to use.

Last weekend she came over and brought one of her friends. They stayed for a few hours while I finished some work in my bedroom.

When I went into the bathroom later, my skincare tray was completely rearranged,

two products were open, and the treatment cream felt much lighter than it had that morning.

I asked my sister about it immediately. She first said they had only tried a little, but her friend was holding a small travel container in her bag.

My sister eventually admitted she had filled it with some of my cream because her friend has “similar dry skin” and wanted to test it at home.

She acted like it was no big deal because there was still some left in the original jar.

That cream usually lasts me around three months if I use the correct amount.

Based on how much was missing, she gave away at least several weeks worth.

I also had to throw out one of the open products because they had both put their fingers directly into it after I specifically told my sister not to touch...

I told her she was no longer welcome in my apartment for the foreseeable future.

I said we could meet at our parents’ house or somewhere public,

but I wasnt comfortable having her here after she ignored the same boundary multiple times and then gave my belongings to someone else.

She started crying and said I was treating her like a thief over “some face cream.”

My mom also thinks banning her is too extreme and says I should just keep the products in my bedroom when she visits.

I told them I shouldnt have to hide my things inside my own home from a 24-year-old woman who has already been told no.

Now my sister says I embarrassed her in front of her friend and damaged our relationship over skincare.

I feel like this stopped being about skincare the moment she decided my no didnt matter and that she was allowed to give my property away.

Am I wrong for banning her from my apartment?

Few things are more frustrating than feeling like your boundaries only matter when someone else agrees with them. A person’s belongings may seem small or replaceable from the outside, but the emotional impact often comes from the message behind the action: “I heard your request, but I decided it was not important enough to follow.”

In this situation, the original poster was not banning her sister because of a jar of cream alone. The skincare products represented years of effort, discomfort, and careful management of a health-related issue. After struggling to find products that worked for her sensitive skin, OP created a routine that helped prevent painful reactions.

She also communicated a clear boundary when her sister previously used the products without permission. The bigger betrayal happened when her sister not only ignored that boundary again but shared OP’s personal belongings with someone else. To OP, it was a violation of trust inside the one place where she should feel comfortable.

Some people may see the reaction as excessive because skincare products can appear less serious than larger personal possessions. However, another perspective is that the value of an item is not only determined by its price.

The sister had already been given alternatives and knew that the products were important. Her decision to remove a significant amount of a specialized treatment product and give it to a friend changed the situation from borrowing into disregarding consent.

The friend’s skin issues may have been real, but helping another person does not justify using someone else’s property without permission.

Psychologist Dr. Harriet Lerner, author of The Dance of Connection, explains that healthy relationships require people to communicate their needs clearly and respect the boundaries others set. She notes that resentment often grows when people repeatedly ignore their own limits to avoid conflict or when others dismiss those limits as unreasonable.

The American Psychological Association also highlights that healthy relationships rely on trust, respect, and clear communication, especially when disagreements involve personal boundaries.

This insight helps explain why OP’s decision is understandable. She did not remove her sister from her life completely; she offered alternative ways to spend time together. The boundary was specifically about access to her home after repeated disrespect.

A home is not just a physical space; it is where people should be able to feel secure that their possessions and requests will be respected.

At the same time, repairing the relationship may require a conversation that focuses less on the cream and more on the behavior behind it. An apology that acknowledges the violation, replaces what was taken, and recognizes why the boundary mattered would be more meaningful than simply arguing that “there was still some left.”

Family relationships can survive conflicts, but they cannot survive when one person’s comfort depends on another person ignoring their own boundaries.

OP’s sister may feel hurt by losing access to the apartment, but trust is rebuilt through respecting a “no,” not by asking someone to lower their standards for being treated with consideration.

Here’s what Redditors had to say:

These commenters agreed that OP’s sister’s actions were theft and believed OP had the right to call it out directly

Some_nerd_______ − No, you're not wrong. Have you told her that you're only treating her like a thief because she is one?

FancyCustard5 − “I’m not treating you *like* a thief, you *are* a thief.

You’ve taken $XXX of my property without permission and I expect you to reimburse me immediately”

CJCreggsGoldfish − But she IS a thief. And SHE damaged the relationship over skincare.

Ask them both these questions: Why is it not a problem that she'd harm you financially, practically (the inconvenience of dealing with the losses/shortage),

and emotionally (by ignoring your request and betraying you)? Or that everyone seems to think you'd should just accept being mistreated?

Why is the problem that you're having a negative reaction to it all? Why aren't you allowed to feel hurt and angry to be stolen from by two people,

one of them SUPPOSED to give a f__k about you but who clearly only sees you as a resource, not a sister?

Why must you bend over and take it without lube while your thieving a__hole of a sister facilitated another thieving a__hole to steal from you?

These Redditors criticized the sister for repeatedly ignoring boundaries despite being told to stop

Buffalo-Woman − Why in the Sam Hill is a 24 yr old woman, stealing every time she comes to your home

and then crying to her mommy when she gets the consequences of being a thief? NW

VianneM − I honestly thought your sister was going to be a teenager, somehow I thought she was 12 until I saw her age.

YNW your sister is a thief and can't handle a simple boundary.

ravengrxve − No, you're not wrong. Especially after you told her before that she needed to stop using your products.

This is about her disregarding a boundary that you set, not about the "face cream". ..it is completely her fault and not yours.

Also, your mother's suggestion is ridiculous lol, you should not have to hide stuff in your own home.

This group focused on consequences and suggested the sister or mother should take responsibility for replacing the stolen products

SamuelVimesTrained − Your mom does not think. She is pressuring you maybe because lil sis is a menace at home too?

But, since she believes you are too extreme, she would not make a fuss about reimbursing you for the stolen (yes, taking without consent is stealing) product, right.

Or better, she paid you back already… right? Since it is no big deal apparently?

Bottom line: reasonable boundary crossed, even after being informed, then consequences are normal.

Anyone saying consequences are excessive, overreacting or making a mountain out of a molehill, is explicitly condoning boundary breaking.

And, of course, the parental superhit : Your house, Your rules! YNW

Lizardgirl25 − Not wrong ask your mom if your sister is going to be replacing your very expensive skin care products.

I would write up a bill and present it to your mom and say this is how much money I am out.

ActualMassExtinction − Your mom is volunteering to replace your stuff and host your sister from now on? Thats great!

More-Jacket-9034 − Your mom failed in raising your sister.

Helping yourself to ANYTHING that is not yours is indeed stealing. It's not "crossing a boundary".

It's criminal behavior and/or (at the very least) ignoring common courtesy.

Obviously things your mom didn't teach her about. Doing it to family doesn't change it from stealing.

Miniscule or massive doesn't change that it was stolen.

BTW, her friend is disgustingly bold to even accept the skincare from her.

Especially knowing that it wasn't hers to give in the first place. They would NEVER be welcomed in my home ever again

Do you think banning a sibling from the apartment was too harsh, or was it a reasonable consequence after repeated warnings? Share your thoughts below!
