What seems like a harmless conversation can sometimes take a turn that leaves you questioning everything. One Redditor found herself in that exact situation when her boyfriend made an extremely strange comment about her earrings and, later, her body. When she was wearing silver hoop earrings at the gym, he made an unsolicited remark, claiming that white women wear hoops to attract black men.

Flabbergasted, she called him a “weirdo,” but his response made things even more awkward. Now, she’s wondering if her reaction was too harsh or if this comment was really a red flag. Keep reading to find out if this was a misguided attempt at a compliment, or if this boyfriend really crossed a line.

Her boyfriend made a strange comment about a woman wearing hoop earrings

'AITA for calling my boyfriend a weirdo when he said a white woman wears hoop earrings to attract black men?'

I (27f) am very confused. My boyfriend (25m) and I are both white. I was at the gym.

My boyfriend came to pick me up but I wasn't done with my workout.

He pointed out the fact that I was wearing silver hoop earrings. I thought he was going to say it something about them not being safe at the gym.

But what he said was, a white woman wears hoop earrings to attract black men.

I was so flabbergasted by that comment. I called him a weirdo and then he said he was just trying to give me a compliment.

He then told me a white woman with a big ass attracts black men. I don't know what to make his comments. Am I the a__hole?

We’ve all had moments where someone says something that catches us completely off guard, something that makes us pause and question not just the comment itself, but the intentions behind it.

This story revolves around a situation where the line between compliment and discomfort becomes blurred, and the OP is left grappling with how to interpret her boyfriend’s words. It’s a difficult position to be in because sometimes, words can say a lot more about the speaker than they do about the situation.

At the core of this story is a clash of cultural awareness and sensitivity. The boyfriend’s comment about hoop earrings and physical features seemed to make a connection between certain aesthetic choices and racial attraction, which is a complex, loaded topic.

For many, hoop earrings have cultural significance that stretches beyond simple fashion. In some communities, they’re a symbol of heritage and identity, not just a trend. So when the boyfriend linked earrings to attracting a certain group of people, it may have come across as reductive, objectifying, and tone-deaf, especially given that he didn’t seem to acknowledge the cultural context.

From a psychological perspective, comments like these may come from unconscious biases or stereotypes.

Dr. Beverly Daniel Tatum, a renowned psychologist, explains that, “Stereotypes are not just reflections of how we perceive other groups; they are often rooted in societal assumptions and media portrayals, many of which we absorb without even realizing it.”

The boyfriend’s comment may have been an unintentional reflection of these broader cultural stereotypes, where certain looks are associated with certain behaviors or preferences. However, the way he framed it, as though he was “complimenting” her, indicates a lack of awareness about how those comments can feel objectifying or uncomfortable.

The OP’s reaction, calling him a “weirdo,” seems to reflect the immediate discomfort that comes when someone’s words cross a boundary, even if they weren’t intended to hurt. This emotional response is a natural defense mechanism when confronted with something that feels out of place or inappropriate. It’s also a way of signaling that the behavior isn’t acceptable.

This situation presents a key moment for the OP and her boyfriend to have a deeper conversation about respect, understanding, and how certain comments can perpetuate harmful stereotypes.

While the boyfriend might have thought he was complimenting her, the OP’s feelings highlight the importance of being aware of how words impact others, especially when it comes to issues of race and cultural sensitivity.

Do you think the boyfriend was just being ignorant, or was he crossing a line with his comment? How would you handle this situation if you were in the OP’s shoes?

Here’s how people reacted to the post:

This group questioned the boyfriend’s problematic assumptions, calling his comments out as inappropriate and rooted in insecurity

ApartmentOk4371 − NTA, but your boyfriend has me dying with these out of pocket statements.

He needs to talk to some black guys and see what they say    Edit: Of course this is my most upvoted comment lol...

it was my initial feelings on the matter, like "bro said this without being asked,

and doubled down why are people like this" but she really needs to sit down and talk with him about that.

There's a reason he thinks that way, but he definitely didn't need to say it to her. To the commentors arguing about ass: Everyone has their preferences.

Whether or not hoop earrings is a calling card for black guys is debatable.

half_way_by_accident − How is accusing you of trying to attract other people a compliment?

[Reddit User] − Ask your dude why is he obsessed with black men and their preferences.

These commenters critiqued the boyfriend’s outdated stereotypes about hoop earrings and highlighted his insecurities, implying deeper issues

Atreya_STAR − It's an old stereotype from the early 2000's.

Pop culture would almost always portray white girls with an affinity for hip hop or dating black men as wearing hooped earrings.

I haven't seen this stereotype in a long, long time. Makes me wonder how old you guys are.

Your bf is definitely r__ist or insecure about you going to the gym by yourself.

To be fair, he probably doesn't hate black people but he's at least a little r__ist because of the way he singled them out. A couple of examples from an...

GalacticFrenchFry25 − NTA. Also, which part was the compliment??

breakingbenfan − Your bf is the AH! I wear hoop earrings because they are awesome and not to attract anyone at all

This group ridiculed the boyfriend’s obsession with what attracts black men, calling him weird and confusing

TrumpSexedHisDaughtr − There are apparently a number of weird assumptions about hoops, even perpetuated by women.

I had a bi girlfriend once tell me "the bigger the hoops the bigger the wh*re." Again, a woman said this.

Curiouso_Giorgio − Your boyfriend spends too much time thinking about what attracts black men.

Plus_Ad_9181 − What? He is a weirdo. he said he was just trying to give me a compliment. What??

These users directly labeled the boyfriend’s comments as racist and suggested it stemmed from deeper, harmful beliefs, even encouraging the girlfriend to leave

Ok_Conversation9750 − Really? You don’t know what to make of his comments? He’s an a__hole.  That’s what you make of them. SMH…

flavorsaid − Your boyfriend has some deep-seated racial issues and is confused. This is common now. Massive porn consumption doesn’t help. Run.

Imnotjustpassingby − tell your r__ist boyfriend to wear hoops so he can start attracting black men. If he's successful, those men can have him

Shot_Help7458 − He’s the weirdo.

This commenter took a more blunt approach

PsiBlaze − NTA But was your boyfriend raised by an Andrew Tate? He sounds dumber than a box of rocks.

What do you think? Would you stay with someone who casually threw out racial stereotypes? Share your thoughts below, let’s discuss this one!
