Woman Complains About A Disabled Child Making Noise At A Children’s Hospital, Gets Shut Down

Hospitals are places where people often encounter situations they would not experience elsewhere, especially children’s hospitals where every family is dealing with something different. Patience and compassion are usually the bare minimum expected in spaces designed for children and their caregivers.

The original poster (OP), a pediatric home care nurse, was spending time at a children’s hospital with a young patient who has special needs.

While the child was making gentle sounds to express herself, another visitor complained and asked them to move because she wanted a quiet place to work. Read on to find out how the child’s mother responded and why the interaction left many people questioning basic empathy.

'Lady is bothered by children at a children’s hospital'

I am a private home care nurse (pediatrics). Today my little friend Julianna had several appointments with specialists at the hospital.

We had some time in between, so we (Julianna and her mom) went to the cafeteria to get a bite to eat.

Julianna is non verbal and has various special needs.

She’s sitting in her wheelchair at the table with us and starts to vocalize, not loudly, just like humming and babbling.

This lady walks over and says “can you please move to a different table, she is being disruptive.”

At first I thought this lady can’t be serious, we’re at a children’s hospital, but apparently she was.

Before I could say anything, Julianna’s mom says “Ma’am, you do know where you are right? this is a children’s hospital.

As you can clearly see, my daughter has special needs and she is only expressing herself. If you don’t like it, there are plenty of places you can move.

Don’t make your lack of compassion and understanding my problem.”

The lady just stands there with a shocked look, puts her hand on her hip, and says “I came down here to work on my laptop,

and she’s making it hard to concentrate, now I have to pack up all my things to move.” I just pointed to all of the “things” we had.

With that, she just walked off sighing loudly and gathered up her stuff.

ETA just to clear up some things, this lady didn’t appear to be an employee of the hospital, looked to be in her 40’s.

This was at a large hospital in Atlanta Ga, that has a library and other spaces for families.

Compassion is often measured by how we respond when someone else’s needs are different from our own. In places designed for healing and support, people naturally expect a little more patience and understanding.

The OP’s story is not simply about someone being annoyed by a sound. It is about the difference between expecting the world to accommodate personal comfort and recognizing that some environments exist to support people who are already facing challenges.

The emotional conflict in this situation comes from two completely different interpretations of the same moment. The woman with the laptop saw a distraction that interrupted her work. She viewed the cafeteria as a quiet place where she should be able to focus.

Julianna’s family saw something entirely different: a child with special needs communicating in the only way available to her. Her sounds were not unnecessary noise; they were part of who she was and how she interacted with the world. The painful part was not the request to move. It was the lack of awareness and empathy behind that request.

A different perspective is that many conflicts happen when people judge behavior without understanding the reason behind it. A person making a noise, moving differently, or communicating differently may not have the ability or opportunity to simply “stop.” This situation also highlights how invisible disabilities can create misunderstandings.

Someone may see only an interruption while missing the years of care, medical appointments, and challenges behind that moment. At the same time, it is also true that people may need quiet spaces occasionally. The difference is that solutions should come from flexibility and respect, not from demanding that a vulnerable person disappear.

Psychologist Dr. Brené Brown, known for her research on empathy and human connection, explains that empathy requires trying to understand another person’s experience before judging their actions. She describes empathy as the ability to recognize another person’s emotions and perspective rather than immediately centering our own discomfort.

This insight explains why Julianna’s mother’s response resonated so strongly. She was not asking everyone around her to ignore all inconvenience. She was defending her daughter’s right to exist comfortably in a place specifically created for children and families dealing with medical challenges.

The issue was never that someone wanted a peaceful environment; it was that the responsibility for solving that discomfort was placed on the child instead of the person who needed a quieter setting.

The moment also reflects a broader reality for families of children with disabilities. They often have to advocate for basic acceptance in everyday spaces, even when they are already managing exhausting circumstances.

A small comment from a stranger can feel much heavier because it reinforces the fear that their child is being viewed as a problem rather than a person.

Public spaces require compromise from everyone. Sometimes that means tolerating sounds we would not choose to hear. Sometimes it means finding another place that better fits our needs.

But kindness begins when people remember that not every inconvenience is an injustice. In a children’s hospital, compassion should not be an exception; it should be the expectation.

These are the responses from Reddit users:

These Redditors criticized the woman’s entitlement to quiet in a busy children’s hospital cafeteria

kmflushing − F*ck her. Sideways. Mom handled it beautifully and classily. More classy than I would have.

elidan5 − Also, who tries to get work done in a cafeteria?!

Smebel − I work in a hospital and I can't imagine feeling entitled to a quiet space to work in an active/busy canteen like ours. Well handled.

voiceofmyownsanity − And I would've said, maybe you should consider an office or a library and not a place where there are kids big shocker here being KIDS.

Let alone sick kids who deserve more compassion and peace.

These commenters mocked her complaints, suggesting headphones or a better workplace choice.

thepuckster22 − Damn. Just put on noise cancelling headphones. Most people have them.

SheilaInSweden − “I came down here to work on my laptop, and she’s making it hard to concentrate, now I have to pack up all my things to move. ”

I would have been tempted to respond with "boohoo".

These users praised the mother’s calm, classy response and protective attitude

Maleficentendscurse − The mother's response was golden 💛🏆🥳

Crazy-Rat_Lady − What a heartless b__ch, and what an awesome mama bear? Go mama bear.

What an incredibly wonderful person, and extra hugs for her LO.

These Redditors shared similar experiences with insensitive people toward sick children and defended parents

blackdays_27 − Had this happen to us at a walk in clinic when our son was about 3, very bad cold and the receptionist/nurse said

can you take your son outside he's disruptive. What? It was February and minus 25 out, you know he's sick right?

We just stayed, then she proceeded to put a note on the door to the room we were sent to, can't quite remember what it said

but was a complaint. I told the doctor and he said don't worry about it.

When we came out I said you must really hate kids, embarrassed her in front of the whole waiting room. What a b__ch.

afternever − I'm tired of these motherfucking children on this motherfucking children's hospital.

Should the woman have quietly relocated, or was requesting silence reasonable despite the setting? How should bystanders respond when disability-related behavior is unfairly labeled disruptive?
