Woman Gets A Cat After Her Roommate Moves Out, But Her Friend Thinks She’s Being Inconsiderate, Who’s Right?

in Social Issues

When your living situation changes, it can feel like the perfect time to make a fresh decision, like getting a cat, especially if your former roommate was allergic. That’s what one person did when their roommate moved out.

They took in a stray, kept it out of her former room, and did everything they could to make sure it wouldn’t cause any issues when the roommate returned to pick up her things.

But when the roommate noticed the cat and the slight dander, she became upset, accusing the original poster of being selfish.

Woman Gets A Cat After Her Roommate Moves Out, But Her Friend Thinks She’s Being Inconsiderate, Who’s Right?
Not the actual photo

'AITA: Friend yelled at me for getting a cat?'

My friend (F 24) was a recent roommate and moved out of state to pursue a job.

She was allergic to cats. I had always had pets growing up and wanted to have one again.

We had some outdoor cats that I often fed and always liked to pet. I never let them in while my roommate lived here.

The week she left, I let one in, and the cat was so happy. I had to help him out.

I gave him a bath, got him fixed, and he is now a very pampered prince living mostly inside with me.

She was going to come back in two weeks to pick up the last bit of her things, but I promised myself that I would clean up before she came...

I did not tell her I was getting the cat. I had an incredible two weeks with the cat.

Before she came back, I gave the cat to a friend to watch over so there wouldn’t be extra dander in the apartment.

Mind you I kept my roommates door closed so the cat would not go in.

She comes back, and if you’ve ever had a cat, you know there’s always a slight smell and slight dander.

She immediately starts asking questions as her eyes get puffy.

I told her I got a cat, but it has not gone into her room, and I tried to vacuum as much as possible, and I even got her allergy...

She did not have a bed, so she was expecting to sleep on the couch. The cat had been lying on the couch for the past two weeks.

I got her an air mattress and put it in her room, though. We went on the porch so she could breathe a little bit better.

She then proceeded to yell at me about how selfish I was and how inconsiderate I was.

I told her she had moved, and I was doing her a favor by letting her store stuff at my place.

She stayed one night and then left when she was supposed to stay two nights. We haven’t talked in five days, which is rare for us.

In this situation, both parties seem to be dealing with unmet expectations and frustrations, but it also highlights the complexities of cohabitation, friendships, and personal boundaries.

OP’s actions, getting a cat while their roommate was away, while seemingly innocent and fulfilling a long-held desire to have a pet, were made without taking into consideration the impact it could have on their former roommate’s health.

Despite the fact that the cat was not allowed into the roommate’s personal space and OP made efforts to minimize the allergens (such as keeping the cat in a separate room and offering allergy medication), the core issue remains that OP’s actions disregarded their friend’s specific needs and limitations.

Even if OP didn’t intend to upset their friend, the lack of open communication beforehand has led to misunderstandings.

The issue of allergies is particularly sensitive. Allergic reactions can be immediate and severe, and for someone with a known allergy to cats, even a small exposure can cause discomfort.

Research on allergic reactions to pets has shown that even small amounts of cat dander can trigger significant responses, including nasal irritation, puffiness, or respiratory issues.

According to the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology, dander from animals like cats can remain in a living environment for weeks, and its presence in a space, like the couch or in the air, can continue to trigger allergic reactions long after the pet has been removed.

On the other hand, OP’s intentions seemed to come from a place of excitement and the desire to give a stray cat a good home. There is an argument to be made that OP was fulfilling a personal desire to have a pet again, which is not inherently wrong.

According to Psychology Today, having pets can increase a person’s sense of well-being, reduce stress, and offer companionship.

OP clearly felt a positive emotional connection to the cat, and this newfound relationship may have been fulfilling for them, especially after their roommate’s departure.

However, OP’s failure to communicate with their friend about the cat before it moved in, especially knowing her allergy, was a major oversight.

Respecting the needs of others in shared spaces is vital, and the lack of a direct conversation or agreement about bringing the cat into the apartment resulted in feelings of frustration and resentment from the friend.

As for the friend’s reaction, it is understandable that she would feel upset. She had specific expectations regarding her stay, including the assumption that the apartment would be allergen-free.

When she found herself in an environment that triggered her allergies, she was likely disappointed, and possibly felt that OP’s actions showed a lack of consideration for her comfort and health.

The friend’s decision to leave early, although seemingly dramatic, was likely an emotional response to feeling unsafe and disrespected.

While it might seem extreme to OP, it’s important to recognize that allergies can be a serious issue, especially when someone has a known sensitivity to animals.

In navigating situations like this, it is important to prioritize open communication and mutual respect.

OP could have benefited from discussing their plans for getting the cat with their friend beforehand and considering potential solutions (e.g., ensuring the cat remained in a space that the friend wouldn’t need to enter).

By doing so, OP would have shown consideration for their friend’s health and needs.

Moving forward, OP should reach out to their friend to apologize for not communicating better. Acknowledging her discomfort, validating her feelings, and offering a clear explanation of why they got the cat could help mend the relationship.

At the same time, OP might need to reflect on how they can better manage shared spaces in future relationships, whether with roommates or friends, by ensuring that decisions are made collaboratively and that everyone’s needs are taken into account.

Check out how the community responded:

These users were sympathetic to the ex-roommate’s situation, pointing out that the OP had a responsibility to let her know about the cat, especially since the ex-roommate had allergies.

Shitsuri − Why wouldn't you tell her you had a cat if you knew she was planning on staying the night? YTA for that. She could've made other plans.

[Reddit User] − YTA. She had moved out, so you were totally within your rights to get a cat, but you had told her she could store stuff with you...

Basic human decency was to inform her before you got the cat so that she could make other arrangements for both her stuff and her stay.

You say you guys had to go outside so she could breathe better, which indicates a pretty extreme allergic reaction.

Typically, with that kind of reaction, she would have had to be on allergy meds for days before her visit to mitigate it, and even then would have been risking...

It’s not as simple as her popping a Benadryl or you doing some vacuuming. You put her health at risk.

These commenters emphasized the severity of the allergic reaction the ex-roommate likely faced, highlighting that it wasn’t just “itchy eyes” but could have been a more intense reaction requiring medication in advance.

Jiiyeon − Very obvious YTA. While people point out you are "allowed to have a cat because it's your ex-roommate," be ready to call her your ex-friend as well.

You knew she'd be coming back to pick her stuff up and stay; you couldn't wait 2 weeks to adopt a cat, and didn't care for her well-being.

[Reddit User] − It’s a very nuanced situation, obviously, but I’m siding with YTA.

I understand she wasn’t entitled to leave her stuff there, and you were also totally in the right for giving the cat a home right away.

But these allergies can become very dangerous even when they previously weren’t a big deal.

You should have informed her earlier and let her decide whether she wants to collect her stuff right away, or maybe even just as much as take meds before coming...

[Reddit User] − YTA. You knew she was coming back to get the rest of her stuff and that she would have to sleep on the couch where the cat...

You should have waited until she was totally moved out to let the cat in, or at least tell her that you got a cat so she could take the...

[Reddit User] − YTA, not for getting a cat, that's fine. But not telling someone who is allergic and who you knew planned to sleep on the couch?

You should have told her so she could get a hotel room!

sinful_macaron − As someone who's deadly allergic to cats, YTA for not warning her ahead of time.

It's not about her living there, it's about sleeping in a home that's filled with allergens. You mentioned "just itchy eyes".

If you've never felt that allergic reaction, let me tell you: it hurts like hell, and it spreads to your entire face, and it's almost impossible to fall asleep.

You're allowed to have a cat in your own home, but you have to warn people if they're coming over because allergic reactions can take days to calm down and...

IamIrene − NTA. She doesn't live there anymore. Your house, your rules. Congrats on the kitty! :)

hdeskins − YTA. You did everything you could to keep this a secret because you knew it would cause issues.

You knew she was coming back in two weeks, and the cat had been fine outside so far. It would have been fine for another 2 weeks.

Or you could have given her a heads-up. Is there central air in this place?

Because if so, then there is cat dander in her room just from the return vent alone.

Which means it’s now on her stuff. Air filters aren’t 100%. Also, clean the house.

You should not be able to “smell” that you have a cat, especially after only 2 weeks.

cityflaneur2020 − YTA. If you had told her you had a cat, she could have changed plans and slept somewhere else, then get her stuff while on Benadryl and with...

I'm allergic to and can't imagine sleeping on a couch that a cat was in. AND I like cats. But it would be hell on Earth.

Once, I was visiting a friend with three cats, who was literally dying, so not visiting was not an option.

Got Benadryl, mask, but somehow my eye itched, and I put my finger on it. Dude.

My face swelled three times its size, and the eye was closed because of the swelling. Ok, darkest humor on Earth now.

We decided to take the dying friend to a clinic, and she agreed.

Four people arrived there: the friend, rail thin, looking jaundiced and weak; her husband, who had a wobbly walk because of a cerebellum injury: me, with a huge swollen face...

People in the waiting room were baffled as to whom they should offer their seats! Four of us are looking sick in very different ways. Quite a sight.

These commenters argued that while the OP had the right to get a cat, they should have communicated it to their ex-roommate, especially since she was allergic.

MidwinterSun − Doesn’t matter how much you vacuum. The thing causing the allergy is a protein in the cat’s dandruff, which is microscopic and floating around in the air wherever...

You should’ve told her you were getting a cat so that she could make other accommodations for her stay.

As it stands, you were inconsiderate, not for getting the cat, but for consciously withholding the information from your ex-roommate. So YTA.

JenRJen − YTA. She immediately starts asking questions as her eyes get puffy... and I even got her allergy meds.

Her allergies are so bad that they are Visible Right Away. I promise you, if you can SEE her allergic reaction, what she is experiencing is 1,000 times what you...

I am allergic to cats & dogs and I have asthma.

The only times I have been hospitalized for asthma were when I attempted to Sleep in a house with a cat.

I have had (non-medical!!) friends say to me, "See, you're fine, your allergies aren't bad at all," when I Could Not Correct them because I Could Not Breathe Enough To...

You KNEW she had bad allergies, to the point that you Purchased allergy meds for her (otc meds which might not be helpful enough), and you did NOT Warn her?

Instead, you kept it secret?? While she was planning to stay there? YTA, for not warning her.

These Redditors shared their own experiences with allergies, underscoring how serious a cat allergy can be.

PhantomChick13 − YTA for not warning her and also for not waiting the two weeks she needed to come back and pick up her things.

purplehippobitches − YTA but not because you got a cat. It's OK for that, but you knew she was storing things there and coming to stay for 2 nights since...

Why keep the cat a secret??? Why not just tell her you are getting a cat so she can get her stuff out earlier and/or make alternative sleeping arrangements?

If she had to go out to breathe better, she sure has more than just itchy eyes.

You could have told her earlier, so at least she takes allergy meds 24-48h earlier to help with the allergies.

The majority of commenters agreed that the OP was inconsiderate for not telling the ex-roommate about the cat, despite having every right to get one.

While the OP wasn’t wrong for adopting a cat, the failure to communicate with their ex-roommate was the real issue.

Do you think the OP should have waited until after the visit to get the cat, or was the ex-roommate’s reaction overblown? How would you have handled this situation? Share your thoughts below!
