Woman Refuses To Let Brother Manage Her Money, And Reddit Says She Dodged A Disaster

Money and family can be a complicated combination. Many people are willing to help relatives financially, but trusting someone with personal investments requires a level of confidence that cannot be forced.

OP found herself facing that exact dilemma when her mother repeatedly asked for access to her brokerage account. The reason was not because OP needed help, but because her brother wanted to manage her investments.

According to OP, this request felt completely inappropriate due to their complicated relationship and years of unresolved issues. She did not believe someone could simply take control of her finances because he had free time and wanted a sense of purpose.

When OP refused, the situation quickly became another conflict between family members, with her mother trying to convince her to reconsider. Now OP is questioning whether protecting her financial independence makes her unreasonable or whether her boundaries are completely justified. Read on to see what led to this decision.

'AITA for ignoring my brother's request to manage my brokerage account?'

AITA for refusing to share my brokerage account info with my brother?

My (39F) mother called me 10 times tonight asking for my brokerage account login info.

She wants my brother (36M, let's call him Jack) to manage my investments because he has free time and low self-esteem. I said no.

For context, Jack lives with our parents and hasn't held a job since college, claiming he’s working on a startup.

He has unaddressed anger issues (in high school, he hit a classmate with a tennis racket) and admits he cannot control himself when he "sees red."

Mental illness runs in our family, but our parents never got him professional help.

Jack hasn't spoken to our dad in years despite living in the same house. He constantly seeks validation from the rest of us that our dad is the problem.

A few months ago, Jack tried to bring up the topic of our family trip (second or third time),

mentioning that our dad was verbally abusive to our grandparents. I maintained that I wasn't present to observe the exchange (as usual)

and said I couldn't give feedback. He started yelling and cursing at me, so I hung up.

In retaliation, he locked me out of a shared Amazon account containing my credit card info and kicked me off a shared antivirus plan.

I was relieved to cut those ties because sharing finances with him felt like a ticking time bomb. We haven't spoken directly since.

Fast forward to tonight, my mother feels for Jack and wants to help Jack

with his self esteem issues and brought up Jack's idea that I should let Jack manage my brokerage account.

I told her absolutely not and that she needs to stop seeing Jack as someone normal that she can cure.

She understands that he needs a therapist but Jack is resistant to the idea.

Every time these verbally charged exchanges with Jack happen, I lose sleep. So AITA?

Trust is one of the most important foundations in any family relationship, but trust does not mean giving someone unlimited access to every part of your life. A person can love their family, understand their struggles, and still decide that certain boundaries are necessary.

In this story, the conflict is presented as a disagreement about an investment account, but the deeper issue is about safety, responsibility, and whether someone has earned the level of trust they are requesting.

The OP is not refusing because she wants to punish her brother. Her hesitation comes from a history of concerning behavior: explosive reactions, damaged relationships, refusal to seek help, and a previous conflict involving shared financial access.

From her perspective, handing over control of her brokerage account would not simply be accepting investment advice. It would mean giving significant financial authority to someone she already does not feel emotionally safe with.

There is another perspective worth considering. Jack may genuinely believe he can help and may view managing investments as a way to prove himself or contribute something valuable. People who struggle with confidence sometimes seek opportunities that make them feel competent and respected.

However, good intentions do not replace reliability. Managing another person’s money requires emotional regulation, financial knowledge, and a strong history of responsible behavior.

Financial therapist Megan McCoy has discussed how money decisions are closely connected to emotions, family relationships, and personal values. She explains that financial choices are rarely only about numbers; they often involve trust, power, security, and personal boundaries.

The Financial Therapy Association also highlights the importance of understanding the emotional side of money relationships, especially when family dynamics are involved.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau similarly warns consumers to be careful about sharing financial account information and recommends protecting access to personal financial accounts.

This perspective helps explain why the OP’s answer is reasonable. Even if Jack had the best intentions, the consequences of a mistake would belong to her. A brokerage account represents years of work, planning, and personal security.

The person controlling it should be someone chosen because of proven trustworthiness, not because relatives want to help that person feel better about themselves.

The mother’s reaction is also important. Parents often want to support struggling children, but sometimes that support unintentionally shifts the burden onto another family member. Encouraging the OP to hand over something valuable in order to improve Jack’s self-esteem places Jack’s emotional needs above the OP’s financial boundaries.

A healthier solution would be for Jack to build confidence through his own achievements rather than through control of someone else’s assets. If he wants to learn investing, he can manage a practice portfolio, study financial education, or work with professionals who are qualified to provide guidance.

Family loyalty does not require ignoring warning signs. Saying “no” to a risky arrangement is not the same as abandoning someone. Sometimes the most responsible choice a person can make is protecting the boundaries that keep relationships from becoming even more damaged.

See what others had to share with OP:

These commenters encouraged OP to set firm boundaries and keep distance from family members causing stress

Zestyclose-Custard-2 − I would tell your mother that your done with the conversation, and mean it.

That a continued relationship with you is contingent on her leaving you out of Jack's issues.

I get why she's being an a__hole, and can sympathize with her, but you don't have to allow her to drag you through it anymore. NTA

rjtnrva − Your mother is insane. Never would I ever. NTA

HoldFastO2 − NTA. So he claims your dad is verbally abusive, and when you don't agree, he yells at you.

At the very least, it's the pot calling the kettle black here.

Mentioning this may be superfluous, but low self esteem and free time are not sufficient qualifications to manage a brokerage account.

Do not let him have access to your money.

floofypajamas − Absolutely not TAH. Also, do NOT give your brother access to your money.

No good can come of that and it's a road you do not want to go down with family. Keep money separate.

Tell her you aren't comfortable with that level of intrusion into your life. Chances are high she's going to keep after you until you set some boundaries.

Oh yeah, that old chestnut. Boundaries are important for us all. I hope you get stuff sorted with your family.

These commenters mocked the idea that managing someone else’s money would somehow fix low self-esteem

Fearless-Speech-1131 − When I read your headline, I naively assumed that your brother was perhaps a finance guy working in the field.

Lo and behold, he's just an unemployed b__ talking about brokerage accounts? Lol. ..does he even know what goes into such things?

Since when is messing around with someone's finances a cure for low self esteem? It gets more and more ridiculous as I read.

NTA and stay away from these people

Connect-Advantage-40 − NTA Suggest to your mother that Daddy-O should give the brother $100.00 to start his own portfolio.

If he able to make any money he'll have a new topic to harp on about.

TolerateAmbiguity − Maybe instead of putting you in a position to "heal" your brother, she should start her own account and let him manage it.

Or she could tell him she'd match his own investment into his own account.

You are not responsible for your brother and you are absolutely not an a__hole for not wanting him to have any access to your finances

These users suggested that Jack needs therapy and structured support rather than being placed in charge of another person’s finances

Vera_Telco − Managing _your_ money won't improve your brother's self esteem. That's not what investment accounts are about.

If mummy and daddy wish to help, they can front the cost of some therapy sessions, so he may consider what he'd like to do with his life, realistically.

Or they can put their money into an account for him to manage.

Also, your mum calling you on the phone the times in series sounds like a scam! Edited to add NTA (rookie mistake).

IcyAssistance5117 − Your mum is enabling Jack a LOT. Get her some information on enabling and uncontrolled violence. Books videos anything.

Ask her to come and talk to you after she has engaged with the material you have sent.

You then need to discuss what she plans for Jack when she has gone as he is not safe and you and your father will not engage with him.

He does need help and she is right to see he needs support, but that has to be professional support

Broffie1 − If your mom wants to coddle Jack, that is her prerogative. If I was you, I would remove my CC from all accounts that they have access to.

I would also go through every bank or money marketing account and change all of the passwords and set up multi factor authentication. NTA

Do you think refusing to share investment access was the right boundary, or should family members get more chances to prove themselves? How would you handle a similar request? Share your thoughts below.
