Woman Refuses Wedding Invite From Brother-in-Law Who Tried to Stop Her Marriage

Family weddings are usually supposed to bring people together, but sometimes they highlight old wounds that were never properly addressed.

For one couple, the invitation to a sibling’s wedding didn’t feel like a chance to reconnect.

It felt like being asked to celebrate someone who had openly disrespected their relationship from the beginning.

After refusing to attend, they found themselves pressured by their in-laws, who acted as if their decision wasn’t theirs to make.

Now they are questioning whether they are being unreasonable or simply protecting their own boundaries.

'AITA For Doing Anything Not To Go To My Brother-In-Law's Wedding?'

I (30F) have been with my husband (38M) since 2019. We got engaged in

2020 and married in 2022. He has two younger siblings who get along with

me and one older brother who clearly does not like me (for reasons unknown).

I had never met the older brother before our engagement because he lives

across the country. After we got engaged, he asked to call me alone,

without my then fiancé present. During that call, he completely tore us

apart—saying my husband was making the worst decision of his life by

marrying me, our 8-year age gap was unacceptable, we lacked maturity (he

said we had the mental capacity of 18-year-olds) and a real connection, and

that instead of marriage we should be partying, doing drugs, and “talking

to aliens.” He ended the call by saying he would not attend our wedding.

I told my husband, who confronted him immediately. The older brother did

not attend our wedding, which we were fine with.

Now, the older brother (40M)—who hasn’t worked in years and is

financially supported by their father—is engaged after a decade-long

relationship. We were invited to the wedding, but given his past behavior,

my husband and I decided we do not want to attend.

This decision has enraged my in-laws. Despite us being adults, they RSVP’d

on our behalf, signed us up for pre-wedding events without our consent,

and are pushing us to travel for an entire week. I do not have the PTO for

this, and they expect me to find and book a week-long Airbnb, which I

refused. We don’t want to go at all—let alone for a week.. The parents are

fully aware of everything the older brother said about me and our relationship.

So, AITA for refusing to attend the wedding of a man who said my marriage

was a mistake, skipped my wedding, and now expects me to use my PTO to celebrate his?

Sometimes the hardest boundaries to set are the ones that involve family, because people often expect forgiveness without first expecting accountability.

Many people understand the importance of keeping family connections, but that does not mean every invitation automatically deserves acceptance.

Respect is the foundation of any relationship, and when someone openly dismisses an important life choice, rebuilding that relationship usually requires more than simply moving on.

In this situation, OP is not only deciding whether to attend a wedding. She is responding to a history where her husband’s older brother directly attacked her relationship and questioned her place in the family.

The painful part was not simply that he disliked the marriage, it was that he requested a private conversation to criticize her, insult their maturity, and predict the failure of their future together.

After that, he chose not to attend their wedding, which was a clear statement about how he viewed their relationship.

A different perspective is that family members sometimes believe major events can act as “reset buttons.”

The brother may see his own wedding as a fresh chapter where everyone should put old conflicts aside.

However, from OP’s perspective, attending could feel like pretending nothing happened.

There is also an imbalance: OP and her husband were expected to accept criticism during one of the biggest moments of their lives, but now they are being pressured to sacrifice time, money, and vacation days to celebrate someone who did not offer them the same support.

This idea applies strongly here because OP and her husband are not preventing the brother from having his wedding or demanding an apology before he can marry.

They are simply choosing not to participate in an event that feels emotionally uncomfortable after years of disrespect.

The in-laws’ reaction may come from wanting family unity, but unity cannot be created by forcing one side to ignore hurtful behavior.

Ultimately, attending a wedding is an invitation, not an obligation.

OP and her husband can acknowledge that the brother’s marriage is important while still deciding they are not ready or not willing to celebrate it personally.

A healthier family dynamic would come from honest conversations, accountability, and changed behavior, not pressure and guilt.

Sometimes protecting a marriage means accepting that not every family relationship will be close, especially when respect was never equally offered.

Here’s how people reacted to the post:

These commenters agreed OP is NTA and said the in-laws cannot force attendance after past disrespect

Go-Mellistic − Umm…is this really a question? Of course NTA. The in-laws

can say whatever they want but they cannot force you to travel or pay for anything.

Life_Temperature2506 − Your in-laws laws must be partying and snorting

coke with aliens if they expect you to attend this wedding.   NTA

MohaveDesertRat − Absolutely not. He can’t have it both ways.

mpurdey12 − NTA Why is this even a question? As someone else in the

comments said, your BIL can't have it both ways. He shouldn't expect you

to attend his wedding after he skipped your wedding, and said that your marriage was a mistake.

These Redditors mocked the family’s hypocrisy and supported OP’s husband setting firm boundaries

Lepardopterra − “We aren’t coming, but can we get her phone number?

We’d like to call her when he’s not there. It’s a tradition he started on our engagement! ”

vbligh − I hope you are putting FIL & MIL on low contact. That is absolutely

disgusting that they RSVP'd in your name. The audacity has ghasted my

flabbers. Maybe be a bit petty and let the in-laws know you ARE taking

PTO, and then you & hubby take a little trip on your own and celebrate yourselves.

BTW, there's a 9 year difference between my husband & me, and it means absolutely nothing.

Next-Drummer-9280 − Text from your husband to his parents: “We’re not

going to A__hole Brother’s wedding. STOP pushing this. A__hole Brother

has been unspeakably rude to both of us for years and there is absolutely

no chance that we’ll be putting that aside. Book your own f__king AirBnB and leave us out of it.

And when you get there and people ask where we are, tell them ‘They

despise the groom and will never be in a room with him again. ’ Am I clear? ”

This group backed simply refusing to attend and ignoring pressure from controlling relatives

briarmolly − Nope. Just keep not booking an Airbnb, let them keep signing

you up for stuff. When you two don’t show they’ll hopefully get it.

k23_k23 − NTA this is easy: simply don't go. Ignore your in-laws drama - you

don't have to answer their calls and texts, let your partner handle them

until they come to their senses.

janus1981 − Nope nope nope. Don’t let them strongarm you.

Select_Draw3385 − NTA. Were they upset he didn’t attend your wedding?

They can sign you up for whatever they want. But you aren’t obligated to do anything. No is an answer

These users emphasized that money, work schedules, and PTO limits are valid reasons to decline invitations

Minflick − Funds are funds - even if you WANTED to attend, you can’t afford

it. If your ILs want to sign you two up for all that stuff, they can fund them, but you STILL are not obligated to attend.

LegitimateMusician59 − If you don't have PTO for this even if you DID

want to go, you don't have PTO for this. You can't do it because of. You

need to work, you need to work. Wedding invitations are just that - an invite.

This situation was never just about missing a wedding invitation. It was about whether respect and family expectations should work both ways.

OP’s husband’s brother made his feelings clear years ago, chose not to support their marriage, and now expects the same couple to rearrange their lives to celebrate his milestone.

While some may argue that weddings are opportunities to rebuild family connections, others would say forgiveness does not require putting yourself back into an uncomfortable situation.

Should OP and her husband give him another chance, or is declining the invitation a fair boundary? Share your thoughts below!
