Woman’s Sister With Alzheimer’s Is Having a Baby, and the Family Expects Her to Take Over

in Social Issues

Some family situations are painful because there is no easy person to blame and no simple solution waiting at the end. I think things become even harder when love, illness, children, and responsibility all collide at once.

One Redditor is facing exactly that kind of pressure after her sister, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s at 40, became pregnant with a new partner.

The family had serious concerns from the beginning, especially about who would eventually care for the baby as her condition progressed. Now, with the boyfriend gone and the due date approaching, those worries have become urgent.

Her sister is scrambling for a long-term plan, and relatives are increasingly looking toward the OP and her husband, even though they deliberately chose a child-free life. Scroll down to see why she feels furious, guilty, and trapped by expectations she never agreed to carry.

'My sister with Alzheimer’s is giving birth and the family is pushing it on me'

Throw away account because I need to get this off my chest ! I’m furious and o__rwhelmed.

My sister was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s at 40.

At first she thought it was early perimenopause brain fog, but after a bunch of tests the doctors confirmed it was Alzheimer’s.

She already had two kids (12 F and 6 M) and had divorced a year before.

The divorce was ugly at first, but she and her ex eventually figured things out and became great coparents.

Because of the diagnosis she had to quit her job, so she’s living on alimony and child support. Then she met a new boyfriend.

Six months later he moved in with her and the kids. We all said it was too fast, but she insisted he was “the one.”

Four months after he moved in she got pregnant. Everyone begged her not to continue the pregnancy, including me.

I told her straight up: “Who is going to take care of this baby when your illness gets worse?”

She insisted her boyfriend was excited and would step up, that her kids were “thrilled,” and that the baby gave her hope.

Now she called me on Friday , sobbing because she caught him cheating and he left. Just… walked out.

She asked her ex-husband if he could take care of the baby in the future when she’s no longer able,

and he said he can’t because he already has to take care of their two kids.

Now she’s about to give birth and is scrambling for a backup plan within the family.

Worst part is everyone is suddenly looking at me. My husband and I are child free by choice, but people keep hinting that we should “step up.”

I’m mad at her for ignoring every warning. I’m mad at her boyfriend for bailing.

Her kids (who she claimed were thrilled) are angry because they know this baby will become their responsibility.

And I’m angry that people think I should fix this. I love my sister, but I’m exhausted and resentful, and I hate that I was right about all of this.

Sometimes the hardest family situations are painful not because there is no love, but because there is too much responsibility placed on too few people. When someone we care about makes a decision that creates future challenges, it can be difficult to separate compassion for their struggles from frustration over the consequences.

In this situation, the OP’s anger appears to come from several layers of grief and fear. She is watching her sister face a devastating illness while also dealing with the aftermath of a choice that many family members warned her about. The pregnancy itself is not the only source of stress.

The deeper conflict is the expectation that the OP should become the solution to a situation she did not create. She can love her sister deeply while still feeling overwhelmed by the possibility of having her own life permanently changed.

A different perspective is that the sister’s decision may have been influenced by more than simple irresponsibility. A diagnosis like early-onset Alzheimer’s can create intense fear about the future.

Some people respond by trying to hold onto normal milestones, relationships, or hopes that make them feel like they still have control over their lives. The baby may have represented hope, purpose, and a belief that she could continue building a family despite the uncertainty ahead. That does not remove the practical concerns, but it adds another emotional layer.

Experts who study caregiving often emphasize that families need realistic planning instead of relying on one person to absorb an entire crisis.

The Alzheimer’s Association explains that caregiving responsibilities can create significant emotional, physical, and financial strain, and recommends early conversations about future care needs, legal planning, and support systems before a crisis occurs.

This perspective helps explain why the OP feels trapped between love and resentment. Supporting a loved one does not automatically mean accepting every responsibility placed in front of you.

Caregiving decisions should involve honest conversations about what each person can realistically provide, rather than assumptions based on guilt or family expectations.

The situation also highlights the importance of protecting the OP’s own household. Choosing not to have children does not mean someone lacks compassion.

It means they have made a personal decision about the life they want to build. Taking on full-time parenting responsibilities for a child, even out of love, is a life-changing commitment that requires genuine willingness and preparation.

The most constructive path forward is not deciding who is the villain. The sister needs a realistic support plan involving medical professionals, legal resources, her children’s father, and extended family members who can contribute in ways they truly can manage.

Family love is powerful, but love cannot survive when it is built entirely on obligation. Sometimes the most caring thing a person can do is be honest about their limits while still offering support in ways that do not destroy their own life.

Here’s what the community had to contribute:

These users insisted OP should not be forced to raise her sister’s baby

Specialist_Wind_6488 − If no one in the family can step up, including you and your spouse (and there is no shame in that),

then your sister needs to look into adoption or what resources are available to her in her situation.

You are under no obligation to care for your sister’s child because she made a very foolish decision.

You have every right to be angry and resentful. But what is going to happen if this happens for a second time or a third time?

You don’t deserve to be forced into parenthood and her other kids don’t need to be parentified.

If no one is going to do it, call social services. Your sister is vulnerable.

Appropriate-Round-77 − This is not your problem and you are right not to let it be. Stick to your guns and don't be guilted in to it.

thisisstupid- − Whatever you do stand your ground, this baby is not your responsibility so do not ruin your life.

Ratchet_gurl24 − Her choices should not be your burden to bear.

These commenters saw adoption as a reasonable option if relatives cannot take the baby

Virtual-Swan-1253 − Anyone asking you “step up” should be asked “How much can I put you down for…. .annually? ” and then wait for a response.

Food, clothing, recreation, education fund - and your personal loss of independence and time!!! - for 21 consecutive years…

how much are these helpful people willing to “step up” and contribute to this child’s well-being, not just once,

but every single year after they cease being sweet little newborns.

I have no training to help with your situation, but I’m guessing there needs to be an ironclad determination of paternity

to either force a financial obligation on to this man (though his character might suggest he’s not working a six-figure job. ”).

Adoption needs to be put on the table ASAP, especially amongst the “step up” crowd who expect you to step up while they sit back.

Aggravating-Dig7902 − If you and your partner decide to take charge because YOU and ONLY YOU have decided, fine.

Since it doesn't seem like the case, the best option I think would be adoption. In a short time she will not be able to take care of herself, much...

And if the rest of the family does not step forward (which is their right), the best thing for that child is for him to go with a family that...

dncrmom − Adoption to a loving family that wants children is a thing, you don’t have to take in the baby.

history_buff_9971 − I'm not sure what to tell you.

Your sister's situation is horrific and tragic, but please remember, Alzheimer's isn't just about losing your memory;

it's about the total loss of reasoning, judgement and personality your sister,

even if she sometimes looked like she has mild symptoms, may be completely unable to reason anymore.

It's very possible she was in fact, incapable of making a rational decision, so she went with what she wanted.

In fact, someone really needs to look into an adult guardianship for her, and that won't be easy either.

Decisions have to be made about her children, about what happens to her when she is incapable of caring for herself, let alone a baby,

and it's best if these decisions are made as far ahead of time as possible. But the situation now has to be dealt with.

If you or any other family member cannot or will not care for the baby

I make no judgment on right or wrong because it's no one else's place to judge you then other arrangements will have to be made.

You will HAVE to involve social services; the options are going to be adoption or fostering. That's it.

There's no magical solution, and you and the rest of the family are going to have to sit down and discuss these things.

If no one wants the baby, then other arrangements have to be made, and it will be a hundred times worse if an emergency contact for social services has to...

So your first step is to get together with the rest of your family and your sister, even if she cannot make the decisions about herself or her baby,

it would be best to find out her wishes and involve her in what happens, and decide what happens.

Luckily your older niece and nephew will be with their father so it's only the baby that needs to have decisions made about.

My strongest advice would be to contact social services - they will need to be involved at some point - and get some practical advice.

Then sit down with your family and try and come to a group decision.

This is a tragedy, and I know you are feeling o__rwhelmed, but someone has to step up and make some decisions here.

This group stressed that the biological father carries major legal and financial responsibility

Fair_Text1410 − The Bio father is still alive. He is responsible for that child care now and in the future. Go low/no contact with your family.

Do not provide any gifts to this child. She might use that in court to state that you are already helping the child with these gifts.

unrepentantlibboomer − Legally the child is the father's responsibility whether he wants it or not.

Your family can't make decisions about the baby without his input. Even if she puts the baby up for adoption the father is going to need to sign off.

Was the poster justified in refusing, even knowing how vulnerable her sister is? And should the relatives urging her to “step up” be equally willing to put their own names on the parenting plan?
