Discovering that a parent has betrayed a long-term relationship can completely change the way a family sees them.

It becomes even more difficult when the person involved was someone everyone trusted, admired, and never expected to make such a devastating choice.

That is the situation this Reddit user found himself facing after learning about his father’s actions at an age when he thought his parents’ marriage was secure.

His father had always been seen as a kind and enjoyable person, making the revelation even harder to process.

Now, after decades together, the family is dealing with the consequences of one decision that changed everything. Scroll down to read how he is trying to make sense of it all.

not the actual photo

'My 60 year old dad went on a 4 month bender with a colleague from work, now his life is pretty much over?'

my mom (58) found out randomly this friday but she had suspicions of an affair. she told me

today as I was on a holiday. turns out he was doing a lot of s__t with her. sometimes we think

with multiple women. she'll take everything and she earns 10x more than him anyways. she

told their friends, and his mom (my grandma).

hes a very fun guy to be around and has a golden retriever energy. he was a VERY decent guy

until this thing. loved by many. we knew he was flirtatious but nothing like this would cross

our minds. I too felt he was acting strange for the past 2-3 months even through whatsapp

and facetime.

his life has now drastically changed. I just sent him a final voice mail saying he needs to

accept this turn of events and focus on the next week, month and year and build a new life.

and marry his gf.

I just cant fathom how someone would destroy their lives like this. at the age of f__king 60.

when they had everything, when you had a wife who would say nothing even when she was

supporting you for years. insane turn of events.

idk if I can say goodbye to him. maybe i'll meet with him once every 6 months if he picks up

his life.

Edit: my mom's calming down as she told me and MIL today after bottling up for two days.

The die is cast.

apparently he's now with his sister and BIL, and my grandma will be with them too come

morning. Two of his closest male friends from their circle, while disgusted and a bit distant

(afaik), are guiding him. He is fully cooperative with the divorce. I will talk to him after the

papers are signed to let him know where we stand and ask him to get a check up.

I think my mom will be ok, and my dad will not hurt himself. My 83 year old grandma is now

calm too I think.. thank you everyone for pitching in.

edit2: the divorce protocol is also complete, he will claim nothing apart from some secrecy

clauses to protect the family of his GF and his reputation. apparently this is not just a fling,

and I feel like he will be happy in due time, maybe sooner then we imagine.

it looks like everyone will be able to move on, which is for the best. today's divorce

discussions have decreased my respect for him, as well as my negative feelings, and I feel

ready to move on without his immediate presence. will establish a contact but yeah, that's it I

guess.. will now mute the thread :)

One of the hardest realities of adulthood is discovering that people we admire are capable of making choices that fundamentally change how we see them.

Parents often feel like permanent fixtures in our lives, so when one of them betrays the family, the loss is not only of a marriage but also of the image we carried of that person for decades.

This story reflects more than the end of a long relationship. The poster is grieving two different losses at once.

The first is watching a mother endure the pain of infidelity after years of supporting the marriage, both emotionally and financially.

The second is reconciling the father everyone knew, a warm, outgoing man who was loved by friends and family, with the man whose repeated choices led to the collapse of that life.

Those two realities can exist together.

Someone may have many admirable qualities while still making deeply harmful decisions.

That contradiction often leaves adult children feeling confused, angry, and uncertain about what kind of relationship they should have with the parent moving forward.

A perspective that is sometimes overlooked is that infidelity affects an entire family system, not just the couple involved.

Adult children often feel pressured to choose sides or decide whether forgiveness should happen quickly.

In reality, they are not responsible for repairing the marriage or determining how either parent should move forward.

Their role is allowed to be much simpler: supporting each parent individually while deciding, at their own pace, what kind of relationship feels emotionally healthy.

The poster’s decision to wait until the divorce process was complete before speaking with his father demonstrates an effort to create emotional space rather than reacting purely from anger.

Seen through that lens, the father’s cooperation with the divorce, his acceptance of the consequences, and the support he is receiving from relatives and friends may help reduce conflict, but they do not erase the pain his decisions caused.

At the same time, the mother’s ability to move forward financially and emotionally, along with the family’s gradual stabilization, suggests that healing has already begun even if forgiveness remains uncertain.

The lasting lesson is that one serious mistake can permanently change relationships, but it does not have to define every relationship forever.

Trust, once broken, cannot be demanded back simply because time has passed.

It is rebuilt, if at all, through accountability, consistency, and respect for the people who were hurt.

For adult children especially, it is acceptable to love a parent while also recognizing that their actions have changed the relationship in ways that deserve time, honesty, and healthy boundaries.

Here’s what people had to say to OP:

These commenters warned that a sudden personality change could signal dementia, Alzheimer’s, or a brain tumor

Elamam-konsulentti − Sudden changes in personality and judgement are one of early signs

of dementia. My mom ended up divorcing my dad out of nowhere and went to hang out with

some bird photographer out of completely nowhere at age 58. In the following years her

mind crumbled, she became violent and extremely aggressively insulting until we got her to

care against her wishes.

Even after the divorce and cheating my dad took her back in and took care of her as long as

he could until she had to be admitted to round the clock care. Please, please if it came from

nowhere, have him checked for memory related illnesses (Alzheimer’s being most likely). Early

diagnosis and medication can give 10 extra good years.

My mom didn’t get those.

LostBoyInAVette − Very similar thing happened to our family. Turned out he had a brain

tumor and died horribly 9 months later. Basically died alone since nobody would forgive what

he did. . .Edit. . nobody knew about it until a month before he passed, even him. Wayyyy to

late to do anything.

PegShop − Just be sure it's not dementia or a tumor.

This group corrected the assumption that the mother would “take everything,” noting she might instead owe him money

Sxwrd − Not to sound mean but if she makes 10x’s more than he does then there’s a good

chance he will be the one who will be getting a payout due to his quality of life going down

after separation. Depends on many factors but with only this information, she’s not getting

anything out of this, he will.

PrimaryInjurious − she'll take everything and she earns 10x more than him anyways Not how

divorces work.

Venusaur6504 − Bad news OP if Mom did make x10. Depending on the state, Momma is

gonna be cutting him a check. Him cheating has no legal implications. Had a friend who went

through this. Also, half of whatever Mom made goes to him. “She’ll take everything” isn’t how

that will most likely play out.

These Redditors felt the repeated income comparisons may have made the father feel belittled or inadequate

KiloWatson − This guy sucks but his kid has mentioned “10x more than he makes” twice in

this write up. Feel like the father heard that much more at home. Doesn’t excuse it but I can’t

imagine having to hear that s__t every day.

Nojmore − Maybe he didn't care about the money. . the fact your keep repeating that just

makes me feel like maybe it was an issue. . for you at least

Mediocre_Concept_828 − Who cares that your mom made 10x more tbh? Seems like you

already thought less of him because of that before the fact. Some people are in relationships

that are unfulfilling and then f__k up bad. Good luck w the rest.

OkAlternative1095 − OP, why is income disparity held over your dad’s head by his wife and

his child and who knows who else? That’s incredibly diminishing. You say he had everything

and threw it away. Consider the alternative - that he didn’t feel like he, “had it all. ” He seems

to have had children and a wife that ridiculed him for his salary failing to match his wife’s.

Maybe he didn’t like the emasculating salary comparisons and being humiliated by his family

for being inadequate, so he decided he could do better and left. It sounds like he’s with

someone now that satisfies some kind of need, respect or otherwise, which must offer some

kind of improvement for him to opt into it.

This group suggested he may be experiencing a midlife crisis or trying to escape an unhappy relationship

Live_Angle4621 − Mid life crisis probably. People have those later on these years

Artistic-Giraffe-866 − Oh I don’t know about this firstly how do you really know he was not

doing anything beforehand ? He may well have been and was just discreet. Secondly money

isn’t everything he maybe have been deeply unhappy in his soul in the marriage and wanted to end it.

60 is not that old he could have decades of life left and if there was nothing left in their

relationship then that is a very long tile in hell.

If this is the case then although it may be hard to understand for you it is best for him - he

may not in one way have destroyed his life but reclaimed it - I separated from my husband at

60 I had very little earning power compared to him yet it was the best thing ever for me to do.

Are you sure you know your parents lives that well ? Did you really know how your dad was

feeling or do you just prefer your mother ?

One revelation shattered a marriage, changed several relationships, and forced the poster to see a beloved father in a painful new light.

Many readers sympathized with the confusion of loving someone while condemning what they did, especially when betrayal affects an entire family.

Others felt distance was necessary until trust could be rebuilt through accountability. What do you think?

Can a child maintain a relationship with a parent after discovering an affair, or does some damage permanently change that bond? Share your thoughts below.
