Michael Keaton, just as laid-back, shared his feelings on returning as Batman in the DC Universe under James Gunn’s leadership.

Key Takeaways

  • Michael Keaton’s open to playing Batman again if the project feels right, showing his laid-back approach to choosing roles.
  • Plans for Keaton in “Batman Beyond” are up in the air with new DC Studios heads potentially changing course.
  • Keaton is excited about the “Beetlejuice” sequel and remains a fan favorite as Batman, showing his lasting appeal.

In a conversation on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Keaton shared that he rarely contemplates reprising his Batman role in the DCU, now under James Gunn’s direction. His chilled reply:

“I don’t think about it much. Never say never, I don’t think. Everything depends upon something else.”

This mindset reveals an exciting chance for fans, his willingness to revisit the role relies on a mix of the right creative direction and the appeal of the project itself.

Warner Bros. had plans for a “Batman Beyond” movie that would feature Keaton and explore a renewed relationship between Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle.

Yet, with James Gunn and Peter Safran’s takeover of DC Studios, they seem to be moving away from Keaton’s potential involvement.

Keaton isn’t stuck on what might have been with Batman. He’s focusing on a different return, to his role in “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” the sequel to the 1988 film.

Promising “beautiful” visuals and an “emotional” storyline, the sequel is getting ready to be a big deal, with a release date set for September 6, 2024.

His recent role in “The Flash” highlighted Keaton’s lasting appeal as Batman, even if the movie didn’t do as well as hoped at the box office.

The response from critics and audiences highlights the complicated nature of his legacy within the DCU, especially considering the universe’s planned reboot by Gunn and Safran.

Despite these uncertainties, the love for Keaton’s Batman was evident at the Oscars, with actors Danny DeVito and Arnold Schwarzenegger playfully acknowledging his presence, showcasing the lasting impact of his portrayal of the Dark Knight.

Keaton is also set to star in “Knox Goes Away,” further showcasing his versatile acting prowess. His return as the mischievous Beetlejuice in the upcoming “Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice” sequel is highly anticipated, featuring original cast members Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara.

Keaton has hinted at the sequel’s exceptional visuals and compelling narrative, praising the cast’s performances, especially Catherine O’Hara’s doubled-down humor and Justin Theroux‘s remarkable role.
