Did you know that David Corenswet, now set to soar as Superman in the upcoming DCU reboot, previously eyed a different superhero role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? James Gunn, the acclaimed writer-director for the new DC Universe, shed light on this casting tidbit during a discussion on Threads.
Apparently, a fan inquired if Corenswet had auditioned for the role of Adam Warlock in “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” a character ultimately portrayed by Will Poulter. The film is also directed by James Gunn before he took the helm in the DCU.
Surprisingly, Gunn initially didn’t recall Corenswet’s participation in the auditions, so it’s safe to say that the 30-year-old actor didn’t make it far.
“I asked him about it and he said he did, so I believe him, but I don’t remember it,” Gunn explained. He also mentioned that the techniques used for Superman’s flying in the upcoming film are far more complex than those used for Adam Warlock in the MCU.
“I asked him about it and he said he did so I believe him, but I don’t remember it. And no what we’re doing now for flying is much more complex than what was done for AW (Adam Warlock),” said the Guardians of the Galaxy director.
Despite missing out on the Marvel role, Corenswet secured a much bigger role later on as the new face of Superman in the rebooted DCU, promising a refreshing change as the new Man of Steel.
Alongside Corenswet, the film features Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, and Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl. Emmy-winning actor Pruitt Taylor Vince also joined the roster recently as Superman’s adoptive dad, Jonathan Kent.
Before taking part in the DCU, Corenswetalready has a diverse acting portfolio, with roles in series like “House of Cards,” “The Politician,” and movies such as “Look Both Ways” and “Pearl.” He’s also set to appear in “Twisters,” a sequel to the cult classic “Twister,” releasing in July 2024, before donning the iconic cape in “Superman,” scheduled for a 2025 release.
The transition from a potential role as Adam Warlock to playing Superman is intriguing, given the characters’ similarities. Both are extra-terrestrial beings of immense power and wield somewhat similar abilities, and are the respective leaders in their own teams, the Avengers and the Justice League. Therefore, if Corenswet can perform well as the Man of Steel, there’s no doubt he’d also nail the role of Adam Warlock, if the actor is given the chance.
“The primary protagonist of Superman is, shockingly, Superman. The main villain of Superman is, shockingly, Lex Luthor,” “I don’t know where all the stuff is coming from that it’s something other than this. There are so many stories coming out every day it’s difficult to deal with and everytime I strike something down I’m giving it attention,” said Gunn about the upcoming DCU title, shattering every speculation around the movie‘s casting.
Corenswet’s Superman will fly his way to theaters on July 11, 2025.
