Joe Locke, known for his standout role in Heartstopper, is poised for superstardom with Marvel Studios’ Agatha All Along. While officially labeled “Teen” in Disney+’s promotional materials, speculation suggests Locke embodies Billy Kaplan, also known as Wiccan from the Young Avengers.
“It’s a dark comedy about witches. It’s not your typical Marvel series,” he says, confirming Teen’s role in freeing Agatha Harkness from Scarlet Witch’s lingering spell. The character persuades Agatha to embark on the mystical Witches’ Road.
“We assemble a coven, an unlikely group of women, and me – mirroring my own life – and journey down the Witches’ Road,” Locke shares. “Expect magic, fun, and mystery.”
Promising numerous twists, Locke draws parallels to WandaVision’s genre-bending approach but emphasizes Agatha All Along‘s darker and slightly eerie tone. He sees the series as a fresh exploration within the MCU, focusing on characters distinct from Iron Man or Captain America.
“It introduces a new type of superhero, which is thrilling,” Locke notes.
Locke’s portrayal of Teen also includes an authentic representation of his character’s sexuality, confirming Teen’s identity as gay.
“His sexuality is portrayed truthfully and positively,” Locke assures, noting its integral role in the character’s journey.
As we’re sure most of you will know, in the comics, Wiccan is romantically involved with his Young Avengers teammate, Hulkling.
“In the series, Agatha Harkness, stripped of power, finds herself aided by a mysterious Teen, breaking free from a manipulated spell. Intrigued, Agatha agrees to guide him on the perilous Witches’ Road, where witches seek what they most desire through trials.”
“Together, Agatha and Teen rally a desperate coven and embark on their mystical journey.”
Agatha All Along features a stellar cast including Kathryn Hahn, Sasheer Zamata, Ali Ahn, Maria Dizzia, Paul Adelstein, Miles Gutierrez-Riley, Okwui Okpokwasili, Debra Jo Rupp, Patti LuPone, and Aubrey Plaza.
The series is produced by Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Brad Winderbaum, Mary Livanos, and Jac Schaeffer, with direction by Jac Schaeffer, Rachel Goldberg, and Gandja Montiero.
Agatha All Along premieres exclusively on Disney+ on September 18 at 6 pm PT/9 pm ET, with the first two episodes.
