First Date Fart Turns Into A Five-Minute Fiasco

A first date starts off great until OP’s date lets out a loud, smelly fart, then denies it vehemently, blaming the chair and making a scene. Mortified, especially since OP had stressed her dislike for dishonesty, she walks out.

He later calls her dramatic, but after finding his Reddit post, OP shares her side. Let’s break it down and see what the online community thinks.

This funny yet awkward tale raises questions about honesty and first-date etiquette. Was OP wrong to ditch the date?

First Date Fart Turns Into A Five-Minute Fiasco

'Walked out in the middle of a first date because he farted and lied about it?'

This is the other side of the story because my date posted his version here about a month ago, and I just found out.

This guy and I hit it off, and after a few weeks of talking, I agreed to go on a date with him. He was very funny, intelligent, and cute-...

As we were getting to know one another, we discussed things that we love, hate, and annoy us from a relationship standpoint. None of them from either of us was...

Some of mine were: I won’t tolerate dishonesty, I don’t like feet, and I don’t like bathroom talk.

Fast forward to our date: Everything is going well. We get our drinks & appetizers. He got some kind of bean soup as an app.

He was slurping it out of the bowl; it didn’t really bother me, it was just noticeable.

Dinner comes out, and he lets out the loudest, rank fart that I’ve ever had the displeasure of witnessing (I work in healthcare).

Honestly, he looked so embarrassed, I was going to ignore it and continue with dinner.

That is, until he practically yelled out, “I didn’t fart! It was the chair! The chair farted. Not me. I promise I didn’t fart.”

So I said it’s okay, just please stop saying that and lower your voice. Y’all, I kid you not.

This man starts scooting around on the chair and telling me he’ll prove to me he didn’t fart and just listen for the chair.

This went on for a solid 5 minutes with people staring at us. I was so embarrassed, and he would not let it go. I finally just got up and...

He left me several voicemails afterwards, telling me how dramatic I was for leaving over a squeaky chair and how ridiculous my pet peeves were.

I never responded to him, and then I found out about his Reddit post. Can y’all blame a gal for walking out?

This story illustrates how a lack of honesty and maturity can tank a budding relationship. The date’s denial of a natural act, especially after OP’s clear stance against dishonesty, shows disrespect and poor emotional regulation. Relationship psychologist Dr. Harriet Lerner notes, “Honesty and accountability for one’s actions are foundational to healthy relationships” (The Dance of Connection).

OP’s choice to leave was reasonable, given the public embarrassment and violation of her boundaries. However, she might consider explaining her reasons later to clarify her stance. For the date, a simple apology and moving on would have been far better than escalating the situation.

This tale underscores the importance of handling awkward moments with maturity and honesty, especially on first dates when first impressions matter.

These are the responses from Reddit users:

Reddit strongly supports OP, agreeing her date’s childish denial and scene-making justified her exit. Here’s a roundup of reactions.

Many found it funny but backed OP’s decision.

[Reddit User] − I like how in his post, he says he was gassy all day, and then in your post, you say how he ordered the bean soup. Guy...

Careless_Welder_4048 − Omg no way this is real???? What I would give to be sitting at the restaurant and watching this unfold.

[Reddit User] − I commented on his post. Told him it was most likely due to his doubling down on the lie vs the fart itself.

I was right, lol. The dude showed his maturity in this situation, or lack thereof.

Some stressed the issue was the lie, not the fart.

josithemagnificent − How hard is it to say “excuse me” and move on? I’m a substitute teacher, and I can confirm that this is childish behavior.

“Hey, I caught you doing a thing. Stop doing that thing, please.”

And instead of apologizing and moving on, kids of all ages will insist, “No, it wasn’t me,” or “Someone else was doing it first!”

I would not date someone who can’t even own up to something small. Hard pass.

OpportunityCalm6825 − Farting is a natural phenomenon. The red flag is that he was denying it 'wholefartedly'. He should just say Excuse me and move on.

Similar_Corner8081 − I don’t blame you. If he had said excuse me and moved on, it would have been ok.

Idk about you, op, but if he said it loudly like the whole restaurant could hear, then I would be mortified. Was he raised by a caveman?

11elevenevele11 − Was your date Tim Robinson?!?!

KeepYourMindOpen365 − Bean soup? Not the brightest of boys!

awkward__penguin − You didn’t leave bc of the fart, you left bc of his red flag behavior that he thankfully showed you one date in

A few shared similar stories or asked questions.

JDOXVC805 − Serious question: if he apologized for the fart, would he have stayed on the date?

carwash7 − I ended up sleeping with a guy on our first date, and he accidentally (? ) ripped the biggest fart after we did the deed. B**t ass n**ed.

I had to pretend I didn’t hear that massive ass cannon and almost died holding in my laughter.

He was so embarrassed, and I’m pretty sure he thought he’d never see me again. We’ve been married for 8 years.

[Reddit User] − It’s one thing to embarrass himself, which is essentially what happened, but to start making a scene about it and embarrass you? Ummm no.

He probably pisses all over the bathroom floor and blames the dog for drinking out of the bowl, too.

Electrical-Yam-3827 − My mom always says, “A person who would lie about a fart, would lie about a m**der”, so it seems to me like you got out of the...

outsidenorms − Fart stories bring so much joy. At any age.

katiem1236 − I remember this one. I love when Redditors find posts about them. I love hearing the other side, lol.

OP was justified in walking out when her date not only farted but made a loud, embarrassing scene denying it, violating her clear boundary against dishonesty. Reddit agrees his immature behavior was a red flag.

Should OP have explained her exit to him? Have you faced similar awkward date moments? Share your stories!
