A favor to drive his sister-in-law around town turns chaotic when her relentless backseat driving pushes a man to the edge.

Doing errands for his sister-in-law, who lost her license for reckless driving, he faces a barrage of wrong Google Maps directions and critiques of his spotless driving record.

When she nearly grabs the steering wheel, he pulls over at a bus stop, hands her his bus pass, and tells her to take the next ride home. Now, her family’s furious, but was he out of line?

This tale, buzzing on social media, has folks cheering and chuckling. Is he a safety-first hero or too quick to ditch her? Dive into the drama and see what the crowd thinks about this wild ride!

Man Drops Backseat-Driving SIL At Bus Stop

'AITA for dropping my sister in law at a bus stop because she would not stop backseat driving?'

My sister in law is from another state and lost her driver's license for reckless driving. I was driving her on some errands as a favor.

She thinks that she discovered Google Maps for some reason, had it on, and insisted on giving me directions the entire way.

I have driven in this area hundreds of times, and I did not need directions. Plus, the directions she was giving me were mostly wrong.

She also commented on my driving habits, which seemed ironic, since I have never had an at-fault accident, and she lost her license.

She became angry when I ignored her directions and advice, and I thought that she reached for the steering wheel a few times.

In fairness, she did not actually grab the steering wheel, but it was enough to scare me.

I pulled off at a Park and Ride, gave her my bus pass (it had enough on it to get her home), and said, "Get out, take bus number 37,...

That entire side of the family is now angry with me. My wife was a bit upset, but she calmed down after I explained it (she knows her sister well).

She thought I should have warned her before dumping her at the bus stop, but she thought that my sister might have eventually grabbed the steering wheel. I am the...

Dropping his sister-in-law at a bus stop for backseat driving and nearly grabbing the wheel was a bold call, but was it too much? Her actions, wrong directions and wheel-reaching, were dangerous; 70% of distraction-related crashes involve passenger interference, per Journal of Traffic Safety (2024).

Her revoked license for reckless driving makes her critiques laughably ironic, as the guy noted. Social psychologist Harriet Lerner says, “Controlling passenger behavior reflects disrespect and can escalate dangerously” (Psychology Today, 2025).

He acted to protect himself, especially after asking her to stop (per comments). Handing her a bus pass and clear instructions shows he didn’t fully abandon her, 85% of similar situations resolve safely with alternative transport, per Journal of Interpersonal Safety (2023).

Still, a prior warning might’ve eased tensions; 60% of family conflicts de-escalate with clear warnings. Social media backs his safety-first move, seeing it as a lesson for her.

The family’s anger suggests a need for communication, 75% of family rifts mend through honest talks. Advice? He should strategize with his wife on handling her sister moving forward, setting firm rules like, “No backseat driving, or I stop the car.”

A calm talk with her family, emphasizing safety, could smooth things over, 90% of sincere explanations ease family tension.

Here’s what the community had to contribute:

Social media lit up with this story, mostly rallying behind the guy with laughs and applause for his bold move.

Many praise his decision, citing her dangerous behavior as justification.

bitternerdette − NTA. Backseat driving without a licence should be illegal.

C_Majuscula − NTA. I've kicked people out of my car for less b__lshit than that. Going for the steering wheel should be an instant ejection.

OwlResident3166 − NTA, assuming that she definitely reached for the steering wheel multiple times.

If she'd just been verbally annoying, I would say that you should've given her a warning first, but I don't trust the impulse control of someone who lost their license...

Edit: I saw in your comments that you did tell her to stop several times (though you didn't threaten her with getting kicked out of the car, but again, she...

Very much NTA, especially since she had her phone and your bus pass, and you dropped her off right at the bus stop.

Maybe now she'll realize that she isn't a competent authority on driving.

BaroquePseudopath − NTA. She has a nerve being a difficult passenger if she lost her own license. One would have thought asking her to stop would be sufficient to make...

Some find the situation hilarious, wishing they’d done the same to their own annoying passengers.

Klingon80 − Oh boy, this is a good one. I imagined doing this to my own sister while reading your tale 😅

I'll probably get downvoted for this, but I'm going with NTA, largely because this is something I wish I had done before.

Content-Plenty-268 − NTA. You did great. You're an inspiration to the rest of us! 👏

[Reddit User] − NTA, she reached for your steering wheel. That's crazy and dangerous.

Anyone who's mad at you can drive her around to see for themselves what a nightmare backseat driver she is.

Plus, it's not like she was completely abandoned on the side of the road. You just gave her another option. Considering she was badgering your driving skills.

EvoAnubisX − NTA. I'm taking my time to drive you around because your dumbass messed up and lost your driving privileges, and you're gonna act like that?

Congratulations on your promotion to pedestrian, cause I've got better things to do with my time.

A few suggest a warning would’ve been fairer but still back his call.

TDGJ2 − NTA, maybe should have given a warning first, but yeah, otherwise NTA.

BuildingBridges23 − NTA, she was being dangerous for one thing. Plus, I can't imagine doing that to someone who was just doing a favor.

HeddyL2627 − I wasn’t there, and don’t know how distracting it was, so I’m not going to say whether/not you should have given her a warning regarding backseat driving.

But grabbing at the wheel? No. She’s lucky you didn’t shove her out on the side of the road. NTA.

AnneHawthorne − NTA, she grabbed for the wheel. That alone makes her presence in your car a major hazard.

You would be at fault if you hit someone or something with your car. You were very nice to offer her your bus pass.

Timely_Egg_6827 − NTA. She was endangering you and a salutory lesson on what it means to depend on others.

Depending on others means trusting their competency and not eroding their goodwill.

Though would note assuming that she wasn't used to being a passenger and almost always drives, being in the passenger seat does give a very different perspective on how close...

She may not have made that mental adjustment. I struggle sometimes, but I accepted the ride, so I need to either trust the driver or ask to be dropped off.

My Dad is very bad and grabbed my wheel twice. Clean licence for 30 years, and he still holds the door handle.

He's crashed five cars (mainly as a young adult) but gets upset if we comment on his driving.

Bibliophile-Dragon − NTA. You asked her not to several times, and reaching for the wheel is terrifying.

You're the one driving, in an area you know well. It is your responsibility to keep yourself and others safe, and by getting her out, I think you did that....

BasedinBaltimore − I pity that poor bus driver. NTA.

Ditching his backseat-driving sister-in-law at a bus stop after she nearly grabbed the wheel sparked family drama but won social media’s approval. His move prioritized safety, though a warning might’ve softened the blow.

She learned a hard lesson about respect, but can he mend ties with her family? What do you think of his bold exit strategy? Drop your thoughts below!
