A woman says her relationship fell apart after an unexpected pregnancy exposed deep disagreements about parenthood, reproductive choice, and trust. In an online post, she explained that she ended a two-year relationship after deciding to have an abortion, claiming her former partner refused to respect her decision and later involved his family in repeated attempts to pressure and contact her.

According to her account, her former boyfriend had previously told her he was infertile because of a spinal cord injury that left him paraplegic. Believing pregnancy was extremely unlikely, the couple did not use contraception. When she later became pregnant, she decided she did not want to continue the pregnancy.
She wrote that her former partner strongly opposed the decision and responded with verbal attacks, accusing her of being influenced by feminism and insisting abortion was morally wrong. She also claimed his parents became involved, urging her to continue the pregnancy based on their religious beliefs.
Feeling that her wishes and personal autonomy were no longer being respected, she ended the relationship and proceeded with the abortion.
According to her post, the situation escalated after the breakup. She said her former boyfriend repeatedly contacted her through new phone numbers and email accounts after being blocked. She also alleged that his parents came to her home to criticize her decision and accuse her of destroying their son’s chance to become a father.
Concerned about the ongoing contact, she sought a restraining order against both her former partner and his parents. She said the in-person visits stopped afterward, although she continued receiving messages through newly created email accounts.
The most emotionally difficult moment came when she received an email claiming her former boyfriend had attempted suicide. The message included what appeared to be a hospital photograph and urged her to visit him while blaming her for his condition.
She explained that she had no way to verify whether the information or photograph was genuine. Because of the previous harassment, she questioned whether the message was another attempt to pressure her emotionally. She ultimately replied that she would not accept responsibility for decisions another adult made about his own life, adding that she believed his family was attempting to shift blame onto her.
Mental health professionals consistently note that while the loss of a relationship can be deeply painful, responsibility for suicidal behavior does not rest with a former partner who lawfully exercised their own reproductive choices or ended a relationship. At the same time, any report of suicidal thoughts or behavior should be treated seriously by those close to the individual and addressed through appropriate mental health care rather than emotional pressure directed at someone else.
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists also recognizes reproductive coercion as behavior intended to control another person’s reproductive decisions through pressure, manipulation, or interference with contraception or pregnancy choices. Such behavior can occur alongside other forms of relationship abuse and may undermine an individual’s ability to make free and informed decisions about pregnancy.

Many readers expressed sympathy for the woman, arguing that every person has the right to make decisions about their own pregnancy without coercion.

Several commenters described the alleged deception about fertility as a form of reproductive coercion and encouraged her to document every unwanted contact while reporting any violations of the restraining order to authorities.

Others emphasized that, if the reported suicide attempt occurred, it deserved appropriate medical and psychological care, but they rejected the idea that a former partner should be blamed for another adult’s actions.

Stories like this highlight how disagreements about pregnancy can quickly become intertwined with questions of consent, trust, and personal boundaries. Regardless of differing moral or religious beliefs about abortion, healthy relationships depend on honest communication and respect for each person’s autonomy. When conflicts escalate into harassment or coercion, seeking legal protection and emotional support can become an important step toward safety and recovery.
