Neighborhood Cancels Annual Dog Olympics After One “Pro Athlete” Poodle Dominates Every Event

Every neighborhood has its traditions and in this one, the beloved “Pup Olympics” was the highlight of the year. It was all about cute dogs, good laughs, and raising money for a local shelter.

That is, until a new neighbor entered her professional show dog and swept every single event. What started as a silly community activity turned into a competitive nightmare. When the organizer tried to bring back the fun with a new rule, it ignited a debate that no one saw coming.

Scroll down to see how a once-happy event ended up dividing an entire neighborhood.

A neighborhood’s beloved “Pup Olympics” falls apart after organizers ban a professional show dog from competing

not the actual photo

'AITA for getting our neighborhood dog Olympics canceled instead of bending the rules for a neighbor?'

I understand that this is a silly issue to have, but it's an issue we have an I need advice.

5-6 years ago my HOA decided our neighborhood is boring

and encouraged people to come up with ideas/activities to liven things up. This, my Pup Olympics was born.

It's just the neighborhood dogs competing (poorly), in different silly events for 2 days and being rewarded with treats.

Early on there would be prizes for the owners of whichever dog won each event, and it really was all fun and games.

After a couple years we started doing a paid entry for each event, and the money went toward cash prizes

and a donation to a really great local animal shelter (where lots of us got our pups!).

Might be worth it to note that most people in the neighborhood choose to donate their cash prize

toward the shelter fund, so we usually come up with a pretty great donation.

People look forward to the Olympics every year, it's ridiculous but it's fun and we all loved it.

18 months ago a new neighbor moved in and she has a Poodle who frequently competes in (and wins) dog competitions.

This dog has a million followers on Instagram.

We all follow the page and obvious root for this dog in the competitions. No issue with the dog itself.

However, it ruined pup Olympics last year. This dog swept every single competition.

There is literally one event for senior dogs that it didn't qualify for and that's the only one that this Poodle didn't win.

We all just kind of stood there for two days and gave cash prizes to the same woman for every event.

To make matters worse, she also didn't donate a single extra penny to the shelter fund

(bonus AITA for if I'm wrong for being judgey here).

This has taken a event for families and kinds and turned it into something it was never meant to be.

It's like having a professional athlete compete at a high school field day.

So, Pup Olympics are happening soon, but this year my committee decided on the

"No Competition Dogs" rule, to make it more fair for the other owners/families.

The Poodle owner got notice of this and has gone ballistic.

Our HOA had a committee meeting and decided in her favor, that we couldn't exclude her or her dog

if we wanted to have the competition in the neighborhood.

I thought about it and then just went ahead and sent a cancelation notice out.

Somebody from the HOA board tried to pull it back together but just isn't getting much interest.

Now the Poodle owner has sent me multiple vindictive messages implying that I did this to hurt her personally

and the neighborhood is split 50/50 on who was in the wrong. So, am I the a__hole?

Tl;Dr: Changed the rules of our neighbor pup Olympics to exclude a professional show dog,

which put the neighborhood in shambles.

Edit for moe info: I didn't have space in the post, but to clarify, deciding to cancel was more of a long story short

after 4 days of meetings with this woman to try to come up with something agreeable.

First, I offered to do a couple of categories for more serious competition dogs,

but was told by the HOA that I'm not allowed to host any kind of events

that make it seem like any part of this is a 'real' dog competition.

Then I tried to restrict how many events each dog can enter, and she wanted that number to be 8.

Out of 10 events, she wanted 8. That was the number she got the HOA board to agree with her on,

and they basically told me that if I couldn't let that happen, then I couldn't host the competition.

Although the neighbourhood event organisers didn’t mind including all participants, they felt that one newcomer’s professional show dog had tipped the balance of a much-loved annual tradition.

The poster and her neighbours had run a community “Pup Olympics” for several years, an inclusive, light-hearted two-day event where local dogs competed in silly challenges and the entry fees were donated to a local animal shelter.

The atmosphere was low-stakes, family-friendly, and everyone looked forward to it. That changed when a new resident arrived with a high-level show poodle that swept every category last year, save one senior-dog event, and the owner declined to contribute extra to the shelter fund as most winners did.

The event organisers and many neighbours admired the dog’s athleticism, but the dominance disrupted the original spirit of fun and broad participation.

After discussions, the committee proposed a “no professional competition dogs” rule to preserve fairness and community engagement.

The neighbour objected vigorously; the homeowners’ association (HOA) sided with her and ruled the dog could not be excluded. With few good options left and tensions growing, the organisers announced the cancellation of the Pup Olympics.

So how to balance inclusivity, fairness, and the original purpose of the gathering in community events?

Research on event participation dynamics suggests that group activities thrive when participants feel both included and valued, and when benefits are perceived as fairly distributed.

One study found that “the role of fairness and benefit distribution in community events significantly influences how individuals within communities perceive the event” (Sommerville 2010).

Another analysis of neighbourhood-based events highlighted that strong community ties and social capital depend on inclusive formats and shared norms.

What advice does the organiser have now?

1. Clarify the event’s vision with the HOA and participants: is this about competition, entertainment, or inclusive fun? Once the goal is defined, rule-making becomes clearer.

2. Introduce divisions or tiers: A “Family Fun” category plus a “Champion Showcase” could allow high-performing dogs to shine without overshadowing casual participants.

3. Foster transparent decision-making: Host a community meeting to discuss rule changes, collect input, and ensure fairness in how decisions are made a fair process builds trust.

4. Personal outreach: Send a sincere message to the professional-dog owner acknowledging her participation and explaining the decision’s rationale, emphasising respect rather than exclusion.

5. Re-launch with smaller changes: Perhaps start with a “fun run” portion of the event where everyone participates on equal terms, then evaluate how to proceed for full competition next year.

Here’s what people had to say to OP:

These Redditors agreed it was unfair for a professional show dog to compete against neighborhood pets

7hr0wn − NTA. If you had a race for neighborhood kids and an Olympic gold medalist runner

showed up to enter, that'd be an AH move.

This is no different, and the fact that the owner can't understand why her precious

shouldn't be allowed to dominate the amateur competitions shows a huge lack of awareness.

ballbrewing − Nta, it would be like an Olympic weightlifter going to amateur competitions or something,

there's usually a "no pros" rule for these kinds of things.

Damn she's greedy, a million followers and she can't monetize that? Make a post about the shelter at least?

Happyfun0160 − Nta, that dog is professionally trained and this is with mostly dogs

who aren’t in competitions at all. Unfair and plus she isn’t helping shelter animals at all. I feel like she entered just to win.

These users responded creatively, suggesting humorous event ideas and fee structures

JomolaMomo − You could change the events so that the show dog can't win.

Event #1: Pup missing the most teeth.

Event #2: pup that gets the messiest while eating (pie plate filled with peanut butter and whipped cream

Event #3: Most overweight pup

Event #4: Pup with biggest/smallest footprint

(have pie tins with plaster in it so the pup can make an imprint that the owner can keep after the olympics).

Event #5: Bobbing for Biscuits

Event #6: 100m Squirrel Chase

Event #7: Speed Sniffing (hide some small scented toys on the play area and time which dog finds the most in the shortest about of time)

Event #8: tug of war

Event #9: 50 yard dog paddle

Event #10: Wiggle B__t Freestyle have the audience vote on the wildness of the wiggles,or the most wiggles in 1 minute.

Event #11: best treat hunter

Event #12: Freestyle Howling You can have a LOT of fun thinking up bizarre events that the poodle wouldn't be a shoo-in!

mangogetter − I propose the following fee structure: 1st Event: $5 2nd Event: $5 3rd Event: $10 4th

Event: $25 5th Event: $100 6th Event: $250 7th Event: $500 8th Event: $1000 9th Event: $1500 10th

Event: $2500 Wanna enter 10 events? No problem.

That'll be $5895, please, and I'm sure the shelter will appreciate your generosity. Oh, and NTA.

These commenters emphasized how the poodle owner’s entitlement and the HOA’s interference ruined a wholesome community event meant for fun and charity

[Reddit User] − NTA this was supposed to just be a bit of fun for everyone untill the new nrighbour

decided to show off and spoil it for everyone else - she will probably be hated for getting the event cancelled,

let not forget the role the HOA played in this - this is one of the reasons HOA's are hated

washie − NTA Simply because it sounds like the neighborhood was no longer enjoying the event anyone.

If someone wanted to, they could start it up again, but from what you've said,

it doesn't sound like anyone's interested. Your neighbor is TA for ruining something fun for everyone.

chuckinhoutex − NTA- and I would make a "press release" to all concerned.

I am disappointed that the original spirit of charitable neighborhood comradery

and good will has been usurped into a competition where a ringer wins (and then keeps!)

all the prizes where the local animal shelter has always been the biggest beneficiary of the event,

which was never really a competition, but just a good time.

To that end, I am unwilling to put forth the time, effort and money to make the event what it once was-

but I hold no trademarks- anyone else can do what they want.

I will seek another way to support the shelter. If that's interesting to you, let me know.

Let's put our heads together and figure something out.

[Reddit User] − I came here ready to call you the AH but what kind of unhinged ultra-competitive weirdo moved into your neighborhood?

The Olympics are for amateurs and poodle lady is a professional who is sucking away all the fun from your neighborhood. NTA.

shzan1 − NTA. This lady is an AH. I have 2 very athletic & trained working breed dogs

and even at the dog park / playing with friends’ dogs’, I tell them to lay off when there’s a ball

and game of catch involved. Otherwise my dogs monopolize the ball 100% of the time and nobody else gets a turn.

If it’s not me initiating the game, they’re happy to just run after it and be involved without actually ‘catching it’.

Yes, it seems minor but I feel bad for other owner’s who brought their dogs to play ball & have a good time.

The fact that she doesn’t have the sense to pull back and recognize she’s not being a good team player

about something that’s supposed to be light and fun is baffling.

I’m pretty friendly with my human and dog neighbors

so I can’t imagine doing and reacting that way, and casting myself in a bad light to my neighbors.

WickedAngelLove − NTA I think it was a fair thing to say because it's no fun when a professional enters an amateur competition.

She took all the cash and prizes and kept them to herself.

It's her choice but if it's known that this is a fun event with proceeds going to a worthy cause.

It sucks that the whole thing was canceled but I don't think you were wrong.

If it's that important, then someone else can plan it.

OP later clarified that canceling was a last resort after exhausting negotiations, explaining the emotional and financial effort behind organizing the event

Puppy_Problems23 (OP) − I didn't have space in the post, but to clarify, deciding to cancel was more of a long story short

after 4 days of meetings with this woman to try to come up with something agreeable.

Puppy_Problems23 (OP) − Thanks for input everybody. Seems like most people agree.

Others says that I took it too far with just canceling.

Oh well, I work a full-time job that has nothing to do with this, and I have my own life.

This was supposed to be a casual, one weekend a year thing that was fun for the neighborhood.

Poodle owner made it not fun, and when I tried to negotiate it just became exhausting.

I spend a fair bit of my own money to decorate, set things up, and feed people for this event.

Instead, I'll be cutting a check to the animal shelter directly, and adding a little more so it matches our typical yearly donation.

The Pup Olympics were supposed to be a celebration of community, charity, and wagging tails. Instead, one competitive neighbor turned them into a neighborhood feud.

The organizer may have canceled the event, but their decision highlighted a deeper truth: some people can’t tell the difference between winning and belonging.

Would you have kept the games going or shut them down to protect the spirit of fun? In the end, maybe the only real winners are the dogs who don’t care about trophies just treats, sunshine, and a good belly rub.
