Man Told His Wife She’s Not A Princess, Was He Wrong For Saying That?

Sometimes, playful behavior in a marriage can raise unexpected questions. One Redditor found himself at odds with his wife when she asked him to make her a mini pizza because she was a “princess.”

Rather than indulging her playful request, he responded by reminding her that she was an adult, not a princess. The situation got even more awkward when their daughter chimed in, declaring that mom was indeed a princess too.

Though the Redditor felt bad about the exchange, he wasn’t sure if he was in the wrong for calling out his wife’s childlike behavior. Was his response harsh, or was he simply trying to set boundaries? Keep reading to see how the community reacts to this playful yet tense moment in their marriage.

A man tells his wife she’s not a princess when she acts childishly, but now wonders if he overreacted

'AITA for telling my wife that she isn’t a princess?'

For the past several months, she has been eerily acting like a child. I understand that she’s playing with our daughter,

but it comes across as weird to me to the degree that she plays the role.

Our daughter wanted a mini pizza and so she asked me to make her one.

I was, and then my wife said me too because I’m a princess too.

I told her no, you’re an adult not a princess. I’ll make you one, but you’re an adult.

She laughed nervously and said ok, never mind. Our daughter heard and said “dad mom is a princess too."

I just said hmm hmm, agreeing; but I didn’t want to have to explain to her.

I did feel bad because my wife changed out of her princess clothes too, but I don’t know whether this whole ordeal makes me an a__hole.

This situation is a little more complicated than just a disagreement about “princess” roles. At the heart of it is a deeper emotional disconnect between the OP and his wife.

The OP seems frustrated with his wife’s playful behavior, feeling like it’s childish, while she may just be trying to connect with their daughter in a fun and innocent way. Her playful request to be treated like a princess isn’t about being immature, it’s her way of lightening the mood and engaging in some playful bonding with their child.

From a psychological standpoint, playfulness isn’t just for kids, it’s important for adults too. It can help relieve stress and build connections.

HelpGuide.org highlights that “While play is crucial for a child’s development, it is also beneficial for people of all ages. Play can add joy to life, relieve stress, supercharge learning, and connect you to others and the world around you. Play can also make work more productive and pleasurable.”

For the wife, taking on a “princess” persona might just be her way of having some fun and stepping away from the pressures of being an adult for a moment, especially while spending time with their daughter.

However, the OP’s response, telling his wife she’s an adult, not a princess, was a little harsh and could have hurt her feelings. It’s understandable that he wants their relationship to feel grown-up, but dismissing her playful request doesn’t leave much room for her emotional expression.

Boundaries in relationships are important, but so is being open to the different ways each partner expresses joy or stress. As HelpGuide.org explains, “Playing together brings joy, vitality, and resilience to relationships … Play can also heal resentments, disagreements, and hurts.”

If the OP had acknowledged his wife’s playful need to connect, they might not have had a moment of frustration over something that was, at its core, meant to be lighthearted.

The bigger issue here seems to be that the OP and his wife have different ideas of what maturity and playfulness look like. For the OP, playfulness may feel like a step backward into childhood, but for his wife, it might be a way to decompress and embrace joy, especially in their busy, grown-up lives.

Emotional needs sometimes conflict in relationships, and when that happens, it’s easy for frustration to boil over. The OP’s response, though understandable, might have unintentionally made his wife feel dismissed and unimportant.

Ultimately, the OP’s frustration is valid. We all want to feel respected in our relationships, and there’s nothing wrong with expecting maturity from our partners. But it’s also important to recognize that playfulness is a healthy emotional outlet for both adults and children.

Instead of shutting it down, the OP could try to understand where his wife is coming from and maybe find a middle ground where they can both respect each other’s needs.

Communication is key, and by acknowledging the value of play and fun, the OP and his wife could find a way to strengthen their bond without feeling like they’re compromising on maturity or emotional connection.

Let’s dive into the reactions from Reddit:

These commenters criticized the OP for ruining harmless fun with his daughter, calling out his insecurity and controlling behavior

nailgun198 − The only correct "no" response to "I'm a princess too" was "No you're not, you're a queen." YTA.

Edit: thank you all so much for the upvotes and awards. I've seen some really kind replies with folks lifting each other up, too.

Y'all are awesome. I had no idea this would land so well! Edit 2: omg, I'm speechless.

I am going to share the wealth here as was the example by others, I'm just a little o__rwhelmed and not sure the best way to do it.

There are so many good replies! Also, since I've seen it come up several times

and I'm worried some folks might feel deceived if I don't point it out - I am a woman.

Absolutely no hard feelings to those who assumed otherwise, please don't apologize or edit your responses.

morgaine125 − YTA. It is harmless playtime with your child. Young kids love it when their parents engage in imaginative play with them.

Quellecrist − YTA Way to spoil your wife's fun with your daughter. How insecure and controlling are you?

And I really love how you ended this pathetic little tale with how "you don't know if this makes you an a__hole".

I bet you do lots of a__hole stuff and claim ignorance afterwards.

This group suggested that the OP should have joined in and played along, calling out his bitterness and hang-ups

Arkonsel − YTA, they're just having fun playing together. Why don't you call yourself a prince and join in?

I bet your daughter would love that! Also, princesses can be adults.

They don't automatically become queens when they get older.

If you look at a list of current princesses in the UK, there's one that's 86 years old.

idontcare8587 − YTA. Good lord. So, judging by this post, I'm guessing you don't play with your child at all, huh?

bigboibigproblems − She's having fun with your daughter, you sound very bitter / angry for no reason.

Let her have fun and be playfully immature with her child - there is literally no harm to it

and your weird hang ups / insecurities are making you not enjoy this. Why not be a prince and play along? It's fun. YTA.

These commenters acknowledged that if the play didn’t interfere with adult responsibilities, it was harmless

[Reddit User] − YTA. Kids were playing pirate one day, they wanted us to play too. So we did. For an entire evening.

We had a lot of playtime like that. Impromptu Candlelight dinners when they played dress-up. Burping contests.

(Yes. Gross but silly. ) Some of our best family memories. Kids are experts in how to have fun. Let them help you remember how to laugh.

Thesafflower − Without further details, I have to say YTA.

Unless she is playing princess all day every day and not dropping the act to to engage with you as an adult,

it sounds like she is just playing with your daughter on the kid’s level.

Asking you for a mini pizza while she is still playing with the kid doesn’t really sound like a problem.

stasy012 − YTA But light on details. Is it harmless playtime? Like an hr a day?

And she switches out of it. And maintains her adult responsibilities. Or is she not functioning as adult

These Redditors emphasized that the wife was simply playing a role for her daughter, just like any actor in a kids’ show

Aggressive_Cup8452 − So even when playing princes with your daughter she can't also call herself a princess?

Why? Because she might forget? You overreacted, it is a game. YtA

[Reddit User] − YTA She knows she isn’t literally a princess, she is acting, for the kid.

This is basically the equivalent of you go to a live production of Blues Clues and yelling “You’re not a real dog! You’re just a person in a dog suit”.

Yeah, they know they aren’t a dog, you’re not accomplishing anything but ruining it for the kids.

Nobody is impressed that you can tell the difference between a dog and a person in a dog suit.

kenzie-k369 − YTA. She was playing with your daughter. Unless you’re ready to put the tiara and tutu on to play princess then shut up.

This commenter summed up the sentiment by calling the OP’s behavior “awful”

TopAd7154 − YTA. Your wife sounds awesome. You sound awful.

Should he have embraced the fun and played along, or was he right to draw a line about the “princess” behavior? Do you think his response was overly harsh, or did he just want to keep things in balance? Let’s hear your thoughts!
