Her Friend Called Her Boyfriend a Rapist After She Said They Had S__ While She Was Drunk

in Social Issues

The conversation was supposed to be an ordinary lunch between three friends. Instead, it ended with one woman being told she should break up with her boyfriend because her friend believed he had assaulted her.

The reason? She had been drinking the night before.

The woman explained that she and two friends, Mia and Sarah, had gone out for drinks. They became tipsy and somewhat drunk, but she described herself as still conscious, responsive, and nowhere near passing out. A sober boyfriend picked them up and drove them home.

When she got home, her boyfriend was already there. He had finished work about an hour earlier and had been drinking wine, although he was considerably less intoxicated than she was.

They started making out, and eventually had sex.

According to the woman, this was not an unexpected situation. She and her boyfriend had previously discussed their boundaries while completely sober and had agreed that this was something they were both comfortable with.

She felt fine about what happened.

Her friend apparently did not.

'AITAH for arguing with my friend over her getting upset that my bf and I had s__ when I was drunk while he was mostly sober (agreed upon beforehand)?'

Last Friday, I hung out with my two friends "Mia" and "Sarah" during the afternoon and nighttime.

Our last stop was at a bar, where we all got fairly tipsy and a little drunk. Not black-out, on the floor and unresponsive drunk. Just your typical feel good...

After that, Sarah's bf (who was sober) came to pick us up and drop us off at our respective homes.

When I got home, my boyfriend had already been off from work for about an hour, and had a glass of wine so he wasn't completely sober,

but less tipsy than I was. We ended up having s__ after we started making out, which is something I very much wanted.

We've been together for almost two years and have discussed this before while completely sober. We're both okay with it, and no harm came from it.

I had lunch with Mia and Sarah yesterday, and we all talked about Friday and everything that happened. I mentioned something about how I still had a great night after,...

Sarah just laughed, but Mia became very still and looked at me like I had said something crazy. We both picked up on it, and it started this whole thing.

She said I should break up with my boyfriend because how dare he take advantage of me like that, and even called him a rapist.

I was really surprised by how she was reacting, so I tried to explain that we had already discussed it beforehand and that I didn't feel taken advantage of.

She wouldn't listen to me, and insinuated that I was made to feel that way by him and that even so, I couldn't have stopped it if I didn't want...

(even though I absolutely could've done that). I ended up telling her she was overstepping and that she should mind her business.

That ended the conversation, but the vibes were definitely off at that point so we all went back home shortly after.

I woke up from a text this morning from Sarah saying that while she understood why I was upset and that Mia wasn't completely fair either,

I should've been more understanding to her because she was just looking out for me.

I'll admit I probably did have a tone with Mia and wasn't exactly thrilled by what she was saying, so I might have been a bit harsh.

But it also felt very inappropriate and like she was trying to force something on me that I didn't feel.

I haven't spoken to Mia yet today because I want to think things through, but AITA here?

TLDR: After I hung out with my friends one night, I came back home to my bf and we had s__ while I was drunk and he was relatively sober.

We already discussed this beforehand while we were both completely sober, and it was all consensual. When I saw my friends again yesterday,

I brought up that we had s__, and one of my friends got really upset over it and said my boyfriend assaulted me, even after I explained our boundaries.

We argued, and our other friend said I should've been more understanding to her side, even if she wasn't completely right either. AITA?

One Casual Comment Changed the Conversation

The next day, the three friends were having lunch and talking about their night out.

The woman mentioned that she had still had a great night after getting home. She casually brought up what happened with her boyfriend.

Sarah laughed.

Mia, however, became completely still.

The woman immediately noticed the change.

Mia told her that she should break up with her boyfriend. According to the post, she went as far as calling him a rapist and insisting that he had taken advantage of her.

The woman was shocked.

She tried explaining that she and her boyfriend had already discussed this situation beforehand. She also told Mia that she did not feel violated, pressured, or taken advantage of.

Mia apparently refused to accept that answer.

Instead, she suggested that the woman had somehow been manipulated into believing everything was fine. She also argued that because the woman had been drunk, she could not have stopped what happened if she had changed her mind.

That was the point where the conversation became an argument.

The woman told Mia that she was overstepping and needed to mind her own business.

The lunch ended soon afterward.

But the situation didn’t end there.

Was Mia Trying to Protect Her Friend?

The uncomfortable part of this story is that Mia’s concern cannot simply be dismissed because she was wrong about how her friend experienced the situation.

Alcohol and sexual consent are complicated. Being intoxicated does not automatically make every sexual encounter assault, but significant intoxication can impair someone’s ability to understand what is happening or freely consent. RAINN emphasizes that consent must be clear, voluntary, informed, and ongoing, and that someone who is significantly impaired may be unable to consent.

At the same time, consent cannot be defined by an outsider’s assumptions about what someone supposedly wanted.

In this case, the woman says she and her boyfriend had discussed the situation beforehand, she wanted to have sex, and she remained comfortable with what happened afterward. Those details are important.

Mia may have been reacting from genuine concern, but concern does not give someone the authority to rewrite another person’s experience.

There is also a reasonable distinction between asking a friend, “Are you sure you’re okay with what happened?” and declaring, “Your boyfriend raped you,” after the person has explicitly said she was okay.

The first is checking in.

The second is making a serious accusation on someone else’s behalf without accepting their answer.

The Important Part Is What Happens Next

There is one thing the Reddit commenters got right that deserves emphasis: nobody outside the relationship can determine consent simply from a single detail like alcohol consumption.

At the same time, the couple’s prior agreement should not be treated as a permanent permission slip. Consent still needs to exist in the moment, and either person can change their mind at any time. RAINN specifically notes that consent is ongoing and can be withdrawn, regardless of previous agreements.

That means the healthiest takeaway isn’t “drinking makes consent irrelevant” or “drinking never matters.”

It’s that couples need clear communication, especially when alcohol is involved.

If someone is too intoxicated to make an informed decision, a responsible partner should not proceed. If someone is alert, communicating clearly, participating willingly, and has previously discussed boundaries, the situation can look very different.

Mia’s instinct to check on her friend was not necessarily malicious. Her refusal to listen to the answer, however, crossed a boundary.

Take a look at the comments from fellow users:

Many commenters thought Mia’s reaction was extreme, particularly because the couple had already discussed their boundaries while sober.

Flat-Replacement4828 − NTA. I would have to stop hanging out with this person. This is unhinged.

Nothing_Special5645 − This is stupid, your friend is ridiculous, NTA.

Going2beBANNEDanyway − Being drunk doesn’t make someone incapable of giving consent automatically.

Some suggested Mia might have personal experiences influencing her reaction.

FloaterGilt − Your friend is completely insane and you should definitely cut her off. Not only were both you and your bf tipsy,

and not only do you literally have an agreement that drunken consent can be given between you two, BUT YOU ARE ALSO COMPLETELY FINE WITH WHAT HAPPENED IN HINDSIGHT.

She's crazy, and calling your BF a rapist should've gotten her a good smack across the face.

ahiromu − The only way this story makes any sense is if Mia has been SA'd in the past while drunk and by someone she was in a relationship with.

She's still in the wrong, but it's the only valid explanation that doesn't end with her being certifiably insane. NTA

No-Way-3835 − This is ridiculous. You can’t get drunk and bang your boyfriend now?

This generation really wants to ruin everything for everyone under the guise of a new faux moral rectitude.

Others thought the simplest solution was to stop discussing the couple’s sex life with Mia altogether.

Fit-Beginning-3035 − nta, every relationship has different views and okays. since you and your bf are both fine with it

(assuming yall have done this before/consented beforehand at another time)

it’s not your best friends decision to decide if you were assaulted or not. Especially when you have stated that you consented.

I’d also maybe not talk to your friends about your s__ life as much, it’s not their business and it seems there’s some emotional involvement from your best friend already.

Crimsonfangknight − Nta Consuming alcohol does mot strip one of the ability to consent Legally the bar for intoxication invalidating your consent

if you being so wasted yoi cant even function.   We are talking pissing yourself passing out in your own vomit puddle NOT giggly and slightly slurring words.

Reddit has an atrocious habit of not understanding the legal standards for “intoxication” when it comes to consent while also wrongly spreading dangerous misinformation

Also who tf is ANYONE to tell you when you have and have not consented! ? You wanted s__ with him and so did he and you guys did it.

Who is she to assert “uhm ACSHUALLY I DONT ALLOW YOU TO CONSENT TO THAT” She needs to take many steps back

Stan-Smith-101 − Seems like fake rage bait

impl0sionatic − I hate to believe that a person like that exists, but as a millennial who’s dealt with the consequences of a lot of idiots making feminism/anti-racism/etc look bad...

I’m def willing to believe that this is happening with your generation too. NTA for one second.

Committed relationship, prior discussion, no trauma, no hurt feelings, no sense of violated agency on your part…

Your friend thinks she’s doing something good but all she’s doing is proving that she’s an automaton with a checklist, not a normal person with any interest in critical thought.

What would she do if she found out someone in her life engaged in something like SA fantasy play with a partner?

I can’t speak for your tone or whatever made Sarah say you acted poorly, but on the main issue, you don’t come anywhere close to being an AH imo.

Final Thoughts

Friends are allowed to worry about each other. In fact, good friends should.

But sometimes looking out for someone means asking whether they are okay, then believing them when they answer.

The poster did not ask Mia to approve of her relationship or her private choices. She simply shared something that happened with her boyfriend and expected her friend to respect her perspective.

Mia may have meant well, but calling someone’s partner a rapist is an enormous accusation.

The bigger question now is whether the friendship can survive that line being crossed.

Was Mia right to be concerned, or did she take protecting her friend far beyond what was appropriate?
