Neighbor Demanded They Cut Down Their Trees For A Better View, So They Let The Leaves Grow Wild

Sometimes, new neighbors come in and think they can demand changes just because they don’t like something about the property.

For one Redditor, their new neighbors who had already been difficult in a number of ways, asked them to cut down all the trees along their fence line to improve their view.

When the Redditor refused and offered to trim some branches, the neighbors still weren’t satisfied. Instead of bending to their demands, the Redditor decided to let the trees grow even more, effectively blocking their view.

Was this petty revenge, or was it a reasonable stand against entitled neighbors? Read on to find out how others react to this “leave them to their leaves” decision.

New neighbors caused trouble and then asked to cut down trees blocking their “view”

not the actual photo

'You want me to cut down my trees? No thanks, enjoy the view of the leaves?'

Our older neighbor sold his home to a middle-aged couple.

Within the first day they managed to p__s everyone off

(for context-they left a boat trailer in a dangerous spot in the road despite warnings from neighbors

and having two driveways and a spot where a trailer could go,

left one dog outside all night to bark at every new thing for a month,

let their other dog poop on everyone’s front lawns, and let it chase after people in their own yards, etc).

After thoroughly pissing everyone off, they decided to ask us to cut down all the trees/bushes

along our fence line because the trees were blocking their view.

They live at the bottom of a hill. The only view they have is the rest of the hill and other peoples houses.

When we told them no, they asked us if we could at least trim the branches

down more so they could see through them, and then walked away.

We haven’t trimmed a single thing in months.

There's no power lines to worry about in the area either, and everything is within our fence line.

We even let the area beside the patio grow up some so they absolutely no view besides leaves.

We actually like it better, because it saves us the cost of a privacy fence we were planning to install.

Be a d__k as soon as you move in and expect people to cater to your needs? Nah.

Enjoy nice view of leaves from your back porch.

ETA: We have cameras and we were regularly trimming them before they asked us to cut the trees.

In our lives, we all hit a point where someone else’s boundaryless expectations push us to reclaim our space and dignity. That universal sting of feeling invaded, of being asked to give more than we owe, resonates deeply.

In this story, the new neighbours weren’t merely requesting minor accommodation: they expected the OP to reshape their yard purely for the neighbours’ benefit.

The OP had allowed previous trimming, but after the neighbours’ pattern of disregard (blocking the road, letting the dog bug others’ lawns), the demand to “cut down all the trees/bushes so we have a view” became symbolic.

It wasn’t just about leaves, it was about power, entitlement, and a lack of neighbourly respect. The OP’s decision to maintain the greenery wasn’t passive, it was a firm boundary. They chose privacy and equity over unearned compliance.

From a psychological standpoint, this reflects the concept of Psychological Reactance: the feeling of restricted freedom often triggers a counter‑reaction.

As described by authors in Psychology Today, when people sense their autonomy is being undermined, “when we perceive that someone or something is trying to influence us to do something against our will”, we resist.

Research shows that this motivational state arises when freedom is threatened or limited, prompting behaviour aimed at re‑establishing that sense of control.

Putting that insight into this scenario: the newcomers demanded action (tree trimming) that would diminish the OP’s control over their own property. The OP’s refusal and decision to let the foliage grow fuller can be seen not simply as stubbornness but as a restoration of agency.

By saying “no thanks, enjoy the view of the leaves,” the OP subtly reclaimed power. They weren’t punishing the neighbours; they were standing up for their right to define what happens on their land.

Here’s the comments of Reddit users:

This group suggested proactive measures to protect the trees, such as installing cameras and documenting the situation

Smokey_Katt − Get up cameras, they are probably planning on cutting your trees.

Garden_Lady2 − These are the types of people we end up hearing about in u/treelaw

for cutting down neighbor's trees and then pleading ignorance.

Take movies of your yard especially showing your property line for future reference.

Also, it wouldn't hurt to put up some trail cameras to get your neighbor's dog on your yard.

Good luck, I just hope it doesn't escalate.

TrifleMeNot − I would print a copy of the article of a neighbor poisoning another neighbor's tree

and how tney were caught and had to pay a ton of $$$$ and place it where they will find it.

They sound stupid enough to try to poison your plants.

These commenters shared ideas for passive ways to get back at problematic neighbors

MarathonRabbit69 − It’s nice when petty revenge involve doing nothing at all.

Though TBH, I would trap their dog on my property then call animal control to come pick it up.

I get the feeling these folks probably do not tag their pets either.

[Reddit User] − Document your trees extensively and get an arborist to give you a written valuation.

Tell your neighbours how much your trees are worth if they are damaged/poisoned etc.

That way you know how much to sue them for when/if they hurt them. But hey, I can be a tiny bit mean.

villan − My neighbours asked me to cut down all my trees because they wanted to get more sun on their front deck.

I told them I wasn’t comfortable doing that, and they suggested a compromise

where I only cut off the top 60% of the trees and leave the rest.

I explained that turning all the beautiful trees into short tree stumps wasn’t really a great compromise either.

These Redditors recounted their own experiences with difficult neighbors

Rabid_Dingo − Thoroughly document "before" pics of all your trees.

They may ask forgiveness later, thinking that cutting down someone's trees is no big deal.

[Reddit User] − I had one of these neighbors. His nickname was quickly FenceBoy.

Too long of a story and a bit boring. Several years later he needed my help in a lawsuit matter with his property.

Sorry, I have no recollection of that event…. .FenceBoy.

Julianalexidor − I have the same type of neighbours.

Barking dog, junk yard in front, wanting us to cut several mature trees for “ their “ view. Nope. Big no.

MegC18 − Tree killers deserve untold misery.

My new neighbour cut down every single tree in his (rented property) garden because he didn’t like birds!

Some of them were growing up against my fence and so that got wrecked.

Then a month later he did a moonlight flit, owing the landlady rent,

and as he was a friend of her family, he hadn’t given a security deposit.

She was mad when she saw the mess! The only positive thing about the situation.

I am happy to see her suffer at every opportunity as she’s a b__ch, whose previous tenant had

a six foot pile of food and household refuse in the back garden. At least tenant #3 was decent.

What do you think? Were the neighbors out of line, or did the poster go a little too far with their leafy retaliation? Share your thoughts below!
