LPT: Avoid Confirmation Bias by Using Neutral News Sources – It Can Seriously Lower Your Anxiety

For years, Alex criticized their in-laws for only getting news from Fox News. They thought it was biased, feeding them only stories that reinforced their worldview.

Then Alex realized they were doing something similar. Despite reading multiple sources, most leaned left. They were trapped in the same cycle of confirmation bias without noticing it.

I used to criticize my in-laws for only getting their news from Fox News.

Then I realized that although I read news from several sources, most were left leaning.

I have since downloaded AP and Reuter’s apps and now use them for news (no more reddit news) and my anxiety and stress levels have dropped significantly.

Take a look at where you get your news and make sure it is a neutral source, not one that reinforces your existing biases.

Escaping the Echo Chamber

Determined to change, Alex downloaded apps for the Associated Press and Reuters, committing to read primarily from these neutral outlets. They stopped relying on Reddit news threads and partisan summaries. Almost immediately, Alex noticed a difference.

They no longer felt the constant need to argue online or obsess over what others thought. Instead of feeling manipulated, Alex felt informed. Reading the news became a calm, rational exercise rather than a stressful, emotionally charged routine.

It wasn’t perfect – no source is entirely free from bias. Alex cross-checked stories, read international coverage, and tried to think critically about the information consumed. Still, deliberately choosing less-ideological sources gave them a sense of control over their information diet.

This experience highlighted an important truth: confirmation bias affects everyone, regardless of political leaning. The tendency to notice information that confirms one’s beliefs, and to ignore conflicting evidence, is natural. Without awareness, it can amplify anxiety and stress.

The Psychology Behind Confirmation Bias

Experts confirm that this is a universal human tendency. Dr. Christopher Chabris, cognitive psychologist, explains that humans are wired to notice information that confirms pre-existing beliefs and dismiss contradictory evidence. He describes it as “a survival mechanism gone social.”

Another form of bias, selection bias, occurs when the information consumed is not representative of broader reality.

Even with multiple sources, the way people filter and prioritize information can create skewed perspectives. This selective attention can increase stress when the news seems overwhelmingly negative or partisan.

By focusing on neutral outlets, Alex minimized the noise. They stopped obsessing over who was “right” or “wrong” and concentrated on facts. This shift reduced their anxiety and helped them engage with news without feeling pulled into ideological conflicts.

These are the responses from Reddit users:

Some warned that no source is completely neutral, but consciously choosing less-partisan outlets can help manage stress.

DrBatman0 − I KNEW confirmation bias was real! I found other articles that said it wasn't, but I didn't believe them.

Nateorade − One nit to pick - there’s no such thing as a neutral source.

Some sources are more neutral than others, but you should always be aware of and be looking for the bias in any news source you’re reading.

Atomhed − If you corroborate a given conclusion before you adopt it you don't have to worry about the bias of any given source,

just stop adopting conclusions that you haven't been able to corroborate. Slow down and digest the media you consume before you share it.

That said, the discussion of biases is most productive when focused on the strength of a given bias rather than the existence of a bias in general,

the existence of a bias alone does not invalidate a source. The world isn't black and white, and concepts like bias are more nuanced and complex than they are treated.

A court that convicts a murderer is biased towards m__der but that doesn't mean that bias is bad faith or toxic,

if you see a bias make sure you consider it's strength and motive. Why are humans biased against organic free range fires

but not fires that have been chained and locked in cages? Because fire hurts, this is not a prejudiced bias.

Why would someone describe a wildfire as 'organic free range' and why would they refer to a firepit as a cage?

Because they are a fire sympathizer, of course, and that is a prejudiced bias.

Others admitted that staying informed while friends or family remained in echo chambers could feel isolating.

revolution1solution − Reddit is an entire confirmation bias.

Wizfusion − As a liberal, r/politics is infested with confirmation bias

mytwocentsshowmanyss − Why do you think this has helped your anxiety

TehOwn − This is specifically selection bias as a form of confirmation bias. Selection bias is the bias introduced by the selection of individuals,

groups or data for analysis in such a way that proper randomization is not achieved,

thereby ensuring that the sample obtained is not representative of the population intended to be analyzed.

Even if you were getting your news from a randomised sample of sources, you'd still treat the data differently based on the source.

This is why blind and double blind studies are so important. It's important to realise that

you're more likely to forget facts that run contrary to your views and remember those that support them.

Also one reason why empirical data isn't particularly valuable. Ultimately, it's impossible to be unbiased.

We all just have to try our best and accept the fact that we're human.

Edit: Also, yes! Thank you for posting this. People are so blind to their own bias. The voting system on Reddit is terrible for this too. Bias begets more bias.

Still, the consensus was that awareness of one’s own biases and deliberate selection of news sources was far better than consuming information blindly.

TravisChenoweth − “Your daily stress and anxiety levels will drop a lot. ” Well that’s a bold statement.

possiblycrazy79 − I followed those sources, plus others including many international ones.

It did not help bc while I felt I had a good handle on what was going on, all others around me continued to live in their own echo chambers

& have no powers of discernment when it comes to knowing a credible source from a biased source. Their own "sources" would always outweigh mine.

So it drove me crazy & made me feel weird like I was the only one who knew the truth & then I felt so arrogant

& confused so I just stopped following the news altogether. If it burns, I'll find out when I feel the heat.

badwolf1013 − Unfortunately, outrage porn is a real thing.

Confirmation bias touches everyone, shaping how they think, argue, and even feel. Awareness, rather than elimination, is the key.

For Alex, choosing neutral news sources led to calmer mornings, less emotional agitation, and the ability to process events without panic. By questioning whether they were seeking facts or just reinforcing pre-existing beliefs, Alex regained control over their daily stress.

It’s a reminder that small adjustments – reading more balanced sources, thinking critically, and noticing personal biases – can dramatically reduce anxiety and help people approach the world with clearer eyes.
