No Leggings? No Problem: One Employee’s Clever Dress Code Win

Dress codes are tricky, especially when they’re applied inconsistently. One former luxury watch repair shop employee found herself at the center of a ridiculous clothing dispute, proving that sometimes the best solution is a little quick thinking and confidence.

The company had a strict rule: no leggings as pants. Fine, she agreed. But when she wore leggings under a dress, a completely covered outfit, with a lab coat on top, she became the target of complaints from coworkers and was even told to go home. Her response? Swift, clever, and slightly cheeky.

Here’s The Original Post:

'No Leggings? No problem?'

I was just reminded of this situation because of some creepy dad over in AITA hung up about his daughter showing off her "assets" by wearing leggings to church. 🤮

Anyway, I breifly worked in a repair shop for a luxury watch company. The dress code stated that you couldn't wear leggings. Cool, I'm not a leggings as pants person....

One day I wore a cute grey dress and a pair of leggings UNDER it. Let me also quickly just say that we had to dress up even though we...

I heard some chattering from a few of the older employees about leggings but ignored them because clearly they are overreacting, right? How is this different than wearing pantyhose?

Because my feet aren't enclosed? 😆 I'm minding my business and, a few hours later, my manager comes over and pulls me aside.

She walks me to the locker room and tells me I am being asked to go home and change because I'm wearing leggings. People have complained.

I'm floored, y'all. I live an hour away and you want to send me home because I have them on under a dress?

I just looked at her, unbuttoned my lab coat, kicked off my flats, ripped my leggings off, and put my coat back on. Right in front of her. Dress code...

I had an awful case of chub rub by the end of the day, but everyone finally shut up. 🤷🏾‍♀️ Just ridiculous.

EDIT: Since 40 of you are going to ask individually instead of reading other comments, "chub rub" is when your "chub"by thighs "rub" together and chafe.

It is a fairly common term (in the States) for a regular phenomenon that affects the majority of ~~women~~ people, who don't have a thigh gap.

It has nothing to do with a penis.. Edit #2: Please don't inbox me for legging photos, pervs. The answer is no.

The Dress Code Dilemma

The employee, who preferred to remain anonymous, wore a cute grey dress with leggings underneath, fully compliant with modesty standards and office professionalism.

The twist: her manager pulled her aside and said she was being asked to leave because people had complained.

She lived an hour away and was floored that she might have to spend her day and commute money just to adhere to a complaint that didn’t make sense.

Instead of arguing or leaving, she removed the leggings right there in front of the manager, showing that her outfit was fully dress-code compliant without breaking any rules.

She slipped her lab coat back on and went about her day, leaving everyone satisfied and shutting down further complaints.

This may sound trivial, but dress code conflicts are more common than you might think.

According to a 2022 survey by CareerBuilder, nearly 1 in 5 employees in corporate or professional settings reported being reprimanded for clothing choices, even when those choices did not interfere with their work.

Often, these issues are tied less to actual policy and more to coworkers’ subjective discomfort or bias.

Workplace Psychology and Cultural Norms

Experts say that overly strict or arbitrary dress codes can create unnecessary tension.

Dr. Lisa Reynolds, a workplace behavior specialist, explains, “When employees are forced to conform to rules that seem arbitrary or inconsistently applied, it increases stress and lowers job satisfaction.

It also disproportionately affects women, who are often judged more harshly on appearance.”

In this case, the anonymous employee’s quick thinking avoided unnecessary conflict and expense.

Workplace psychologist Dr. Karen Fields notes, “Creative compliance, finding a solution that technically meets the rules while also respecting personal comfort, is often the best approach in rigid environments. It prevents escalation and preserves morale.”

The Power of Confidence

The story also highlights the role of confidence in navigating workplace absurdities.

By calmly removing the leggings and demonstrating her compliance, the employee diffused tension and sent a subtle message: the complaints were baseless.

Reddit users responded enthusiastically, pointing out the absurdity of policing leggings under dresses while pantyhose or tights remain acceptable.

Here’s what people had to say to OP:

Many readers compared the situation to other ridiculous dress code enforcement, like stapling ripped jeans at school or judging adult women for modestly covering up.

Charming_Fix5627 − On what plane of existence is wearing leggings with a dress LESS modest than wearing only a dress and zero coverage for your underwear

Mumfiegirl − You should have said they’re not leggings, they’re footless tights

Em_the_Strange − man as someone who's into watches, im all too aware of how backwards some attitudes are in the watch industry,

both on the manufacturing side as well as the sales side. it's frankly ridiculous because if you had on thigh highs instead, would they be dress code compliant???

Some shared tips for avoiding chafing (“chub rub”), highlighting that the solution required both practical knowledge and a dose of humor.

jesthere − I was called to my son's school because the pair of jeans he was wearing had a rip in them (on the lower leg).

Apparently, the rip in his jeans was going to contribute to a lack of self-esteem on his part (eye-roll).

I took a replacement pair for him to change to, but accidentally brought one that didn't fit him.

He had a test in 10 minutes that I didn't want him to miss. So I asked the principal for a stapler and then stapled the rip shut

and told my son to go take his test with his self-esteem intact. Principal didn't put up a fight with me.

brettyrocks − I want to comment on that AITA post so bad but I still have two days left on a 2 week ban lol

that-old-broad − Ugh. ...my Christian bully ex-sister in law eyed me up and down at a family gathering one Christmas.

I had on cable knit leggings under a tartan miniskirt (admittedly it was hella short, hence the leggings) and a turtle neck sweater. Literally the only things exposed were my...

After giving me the hairy eyeball she commented, 'your skirt's a little short, isn't it? '.

I rolled my eyes and looked pointedly at her teenaged daughter playing with the little kids in a Tshirt and leggings

and smiled at her and said, "looks like I'm covering more than most people here'.

Editing because I've had a couple of glasses of wine and wanna add, "F__k you, Tami. .. you're the bitchiest b__ch that ever did b__ch! ".

The consensus: this employee handled a ridiculous situation brilliantly.

barockwerneck − Wearing leggins under a dress and lab coat: too sexy to be legal. Underwear only under dress and lab coat: a-ok. Stupid prude boomers.

Gstamsharp − I can honestly understand a dress code that didn't allow leggings in place of pants.

But why on earth would you not be allowed to wear them more or less as an undergarment? How is that any different than nylons?

[Reddit User] − Aren't pantyhose just VERY thin leggings? Do they ban pantyhose, even under a dress?

"People have complained." Some people don't have enough real work to do if they're standing around monitoring the dress code.

If I was the manager, I'd have been wondering more about that.

reydolith − Dear fellow human who hates the Chub Rub. Look up Bandelettes, they save me much pain.

The employee didn’t break any rules, but she restored common sense in a situation dominated by arbitrary judgment.

Sometimes, the best solution is just to think a step ahead, and maybe, just maybe, keep a spare pair of leggings handy. Workplace absurdity doesn’t always have to win.
