Young Woman Blocks Pushy New Friend From Forcing His Way Into Her Home At Night

A young woman finally collapsed onto her couch after a draining shift, house in disarray, savoring the quiet slide into a much-needed nap. Her phone rang: a new male acquaintance announced he was nearby and planned to drop by uninvited. She firmly turned him down, ended the call, and settled back in, only for insistent knocking to shatter the peace moments later.

There he stood at her door, attempting to step inside despite never having been invited before. Having met just once in a group and exchanged only messages, she had already warned him she required days of advance notice for visits. He brushed off her repeated no, tried to enter anyway, leaving her uneasy until she stood her ground and he stormed off in frustration.

A young woman firmly denied entry to a new acquaintance who showed up unannounced.

'AITAH for not allowing my "friend" into my house?'

So I 22f recently became friends with Jeremy 24m. Early on In our friendship I told him that I hate having guests who show up unannounced

and I preferred if someone is visiting to tell me two days in advance (unless it's an emergency, my family and old friends know this and respect my boundaries).

Now yesterday I was at home lazing around after a long day at work, my house was a mess (I usually clean at night).

And was drifting off to sleep (I love sleeping). When I got a phone call and it was Jeremy.

He told me he was In my neighborhood, I said 'okay, have fun'. Then he was like I'm coming over to your place I asked him 'how come?'

He said he just wanted to see me And I told him 'no thanks ' and cut the call and went back to my sleep.

A few minutes later I hear a knock and I think maybe it's my neighbor? Nope, it was Jeremy.

He attempts to come in my house but I stop him, (mind you this is the first time he's visiting,

I've never been to his place, we've met once in a group setting and only text and sometimes calls).

I told him I'm not in the mood for visitors and he didn't tell me prior so he can't come in and that he's making me uncomfortable.

He tried to dismiss me and still enter but I stood firm till he left huffing and puffing.

Now a day later I'm just thinking to myself if I went too far. (I haven't talked to him since) But did I go too far with my approach? AITAH?

Turning down an unannounced visitor might seem like no big deal to some, but when it’s someone you’ve barely met ignoring a direct “no,” it can feel downright unsettling.

In this case, the Redditor laid out her preferences early: advance notice for visits, please. Jeremy not only skipped that step but dismissed her phone refusal and tried to enter anyway.

He might have thought his enthusiasm was flattering, like a spontaneous “let’s hang” gesture. But overlooking clear boundaries, especially in a budding friendship with limited history, shifts it from sweet to concerning. Motivations could range from misplaced confidence to not fully grasping consent in social settings, but the result? It erodes trust fast.

On the other hand, her firm stance protected her comfort on a tired day. Holding the line at the door showed self-respect, even if it felt tense in the moment. Psychologists often highlight how respecting personal space builds healthier connections, while pushing past “no” can signal deeper issues with listening or empathy.

This ties into broader chats about personal safety and autonomy, especially for young women navigating new relationships. Ignoring verbal refusals isn’t just rude, it can heighten unease, as uninvited home visits blur lines in ways that feel intrusive.

According to UN Women, harassment and other forms of violence, whether in public or private spaces remain everyday realities for women and girls worldwide, underscoring why clear boundaries matter for feeling secure.

Psychologist and consultant Jessica Moore, in her work on relationships, notes: “Our boundaries define our personal space – and we need to be sovereign there in order to be able to step into our full power and potential.” This rings true here. The Redditor’s quick enforcement of her rule reclaimed her space, preventing escalation and reinforcing her sense of control.

Neutral advice? Communicate expectations upfront, as she did, and trust your gut if they’re disregarded. If someone repeatedly ignores limits, it might be wise to reassess the friendship for your peace of mind. Healthy connections thrive on mutual respect, perhaps a calm chat could clarify things, or distance if patterns persist.

Let’s dive into the reactions from Reddit:

Some people view Jeremy’s behavior as dangerous, stalker-like, and a major red flag for ignoring boundaries.

Bunster04 − That’s stalker behaviour, definitely let your friends know he found out your address and tried to push his way into your home. That’s not ok.

National_Stomach_977 − This is bad. He does not like to take 'no' for an answer. Dangerous.

Franklyenergized_12 − This is a red flag. Only bad people try to push their way into your home, and the fact that you already said No several ways makes it...

Historical_Agent9426 − NTA NTA NTA Jeremy is not your friend. He ignored you when you said you needed advance notice before entertaining visitors.

He ignored you when you told him over the phone that he could not come to your house.

He ignored you when you told him he could not come into your house (luckily, you were able to keep him out).

What other boundaries of yours do you think he plans to ignore? Do you want this man to place his penis in one of your orifices?

If you remain in contact with him, that is what will happen. He has made it clear he will ignore you when you say “no”

Some people emphasize that OP is NTA for enforcing a clear “no” and protecting their home.

lihzee − NTA. He was told no. That should have been it. He had no business showing up to your house and trying to come in.

pixie-ann − NTA how did he get your address? Don’t let anyone into your home unless you want them there. His lack of understanding a clear “no” is a giant...

facinationstreet − yeah, I wouldn't open the door to Jeremy ever again. His behavior is borderline. NTA

Avatarzuko35 − Definitely NTA. You told this dude over and over you didn't want him coming over, and he completely ignored you

Some people express shock at Jeremy’s strange and intrusive actions toward someone he just met.

palesealion22 − Wow, what a strange guy. NTA. You have very basic boundaries, you just met this guy and hes trying to barge into your home? So weird. Stay safe

Appropriate-Net-6186 − WHY would you think you’re in the wrong? ?? he’s literally acting crazy

At the end of the day, this Redditor prioritized her comfort and safety over avoiding awkwardness, a move that sparked massive support online. Do you think standing firm was the right call, especially with someone so new pushing limits? Or could a softer approach have smoothed things over? How would you handle a surprise knock from an acquaintance? Drop your thoughts below, we’re all ears!
