Woman Bravely Shares Medical Secret with MIL, Is Met with Utter Cruelty

We have all had moments where we decide to be vulnerable and share a deep, personal part of ourselves. We hope for kindness and understanding, for a gentle hug or a quiet nod of support. But what happens when that trust is met not just with a lack of understanding, but with outright cruelty?

A woman on Reddit, in the process of sharing her longer story with a difficult mother-in-law she brilliantly nicknamed “Heranus,” started with a chapter from her past that is profoundly personal and tender. She shared her deepest insecurity with her future MIL, who twisted it into something unrecognizable and mean. This is a story about deep hurt, but more importantly, about the incredible, healing love of a partner who knows exactly how to stand up for his person.

The Story

What makes me a lesbian according to my MIL Heranus?

I decided to go with Heranus for my MIL. It's perfect, she thinks everything should revolve around her, it sounds like a royal title (her A__s),

it has rings, it's cold, huge and toxic. So thanks for that suggestion! I know most people asked for the ring story,

but I feel like I need to give some extra background information if I'm going to tell my entire story, and that means I have

to tell this part first. I think this is important to understand me. Amongst other things it helps to explain how I feel about DD,

since she's the child I thought I'd never have. Trigger warning for a staggering lack of LGBTQ+ understanding, infertility, and general stupidity,

but that last one goes for almost every story on this sub. Also, this is a very difficult subject for me,

so please excuse me if this is rambling or reads weird. I was born with Mayer–Rokitansky–Küster–Hauser syndrome (MRKH).

That's the doctor's way of saying I was born without a uterus and without a functional vagina. I do have normal hormones,

so I do look female, and I am female in every way. I had surgery to 'make' a vagina for me when I was 19,

and now I have a normal s__ life (long live lube) but I'll never have a bio baby. I also don't get periods,

so there's a small silver lining there. Heranus was (ironically) very protective of DD, and was convinced that if DH and I ever had a baby,

I'd 'cinderella' DD (yes, that's how she said it). She kept pestering me about it in the beginning of the relationship, and after a few

months of this I snapped. I told her I'd never have a baby because I don't have the parts. She was shocked, and actually apologized.

Then she asked me to explain my situation. She sounded genuinely sympathetic, so I did. And regretted it instantly.

I had shown that woman my deepest insecurity, and her answer was: "so you're one of those trans weirdos?" That was awful,

because I did feel like I'm not a true woman. I still feel like a fraud some days, despite my DH accepting everything about me.

I don't see anything wrong with being trans, you do you and be proud about it, but I'm not trans.

I wasn't born male, I never had a gender identity crisis, I just miss something, like some people miss an arm.

Calling me trans trivializes both my and trans people's struggles, and I couldn't believe she just did that. So I tried explaining again.

"so that's why you're so masculine. What are you doing with DH?! Shouldn't you date a girl? How can you like men if you don't have a real vagina?!

I'm going to tell on you!!!" again, MRKH does NOT affect hormones, so it doesn't affect secundary s__ual characteristics. I'm not masculine in any way.

And no, I'm not attracted to women. I happen to like d__k. I wanted to punch Heranus in her oh so precious natural

vagina for being such a cunt about it all, but I didn't. I just walked out of there, and broke down crying at home.

She actually did call DH. He thought that was the perfect time to announce our engagement. Even I didn't know about it then,

but I love him for understanding all I needed was reassurance he loved me for me,

so it was a very weird but very much appreciated and perfect way to propose. When Heranus started screeching "how could you like

someone without a vagina?!?!", DH answered that I have a designer one, and that it's nice he doesn't need to wear a condom.

Heranus hung up very quickly. God, I love that man. Since then, whenever she sees me wearing pants, not wearing makeup,

doing sports or helping DH with something around the house, she says I'm a lesbian and DH is my "beard" (she's absolutely clueless).

Weirdly, she never talked about my parts again, only that I'm a closet lesbian. It wouldn't surprise me if she understood so little of what I told her,

she just suppressed it and only remembers the lesbian part. This situation has made me very insecure about my femininity, and about my relationship,

issues I thought I had left behind, but DH is a champ and he helped me through it. I was however very protective

of my engagement ring, because it reminded me that DH loved me despite me being a 'fake',

and that's why the ring borrowing had me freaking out. That's for next time. This has been emotionally draining, so I'm not sure yet when

I'll feel up to posting that story. Thank you for reading. EDIT: I just want to thank everyone. I was hesitant to post this,

it's the first time I opened up to so many people (only 5 people knew before this, not counting the medical team).

I didn't expect you all to be so kind about it, so openminded and just nice. I cried and laughed reading the comments. Thank you

EDIT2: I'm not entirely sure what Gold is here in Reddit, but it seems to be something like a sticker for a toddler, a

sign of appreciation or support, so thanks to the stranger who gave me Gold :-)

Reading this just makes your heart clench. It takes so much courage to open up about a medical condition that touches the very core of your identity. To have that bravery met with such a tidal wave of ignorance and cruelty is just breathtakingly awful. Heranus’s inability to show even a flicker of human decency is one thing, but to then twist the OP’s reality into a bizarre, judgmental narrative is another level of unkind.

But then, just when your faith in humanity is faltering, her husband steps in. His reaction—the spontaneous proposal, the “designer vagina” clapback—is the kind of unconditional, fierce support we all dream of. He did not just defend her; he celebrated her and chose her, loudly and clearly, right in that moment. He reminded her, and all of us, that love is not about the parts we have, but the whole person we are.

Expert Opinion

This situation goes far beyond a simple misunderstanding. The MIL’s behavior touches on classic traits of a toxic family member who uses personal information as ammunition. When the Redditor shared her MRKH diagnosis, she offered a chance for connection. Heranus rejected it and instead found a perceived weakness to exploit.

According to Psychology Today, people with narcissistic traits often react to others’ vulnerability not with empathy, but with an opportunity to assert dominance or control the narrative. The MIL’s immediate jump to labels like “trans weirdo” and “lesbian” was a way to dehumanize the OP and dismiss her lived experience, re-centering the situation around her own bigotry.

The husband’s response, however, is a textbook example of healthy boundary setting in a marriage. As Dr. John Gottman’s research suggests, a core principle of a successful partnership is creating a new family unit that takes precedence over families of origin. By proposing at that exact moment, he wasn’t just being romantic; he was building a fortress around their relationship. He was sending a clear message to his mother: “She is my family now, and her defense is my priority.”

Ultimately, the OP’s story is a painful but powerful illustration of how damaging it can be when someone dismisses your identity. Her feelings of being a “fake” are common among those whose bodies don’t fit a narrow, traditional definition of womanhood, but as experts from VeryWellMind point out, our identities are ours alone to define, and no one can take that away.

Community Opinions

The Reddit community wrapped the OP in a massive virtual hug, validating her feelings and cheering on her amazing husband.

The MIL’s astonishing ignorance and cruelty left commenters speechless.
Justhereforhugs − Oh. ..oh. ..wow. .! I can't even or uneven right now...

Calling me trans trivializes both my and trans people's struggles, and I couldn't believe she just did that.

trashythrowaway12 − I read, "so you're one of those trans weirdos? " and had to restrain myself from throwing my phone across the room.

Also, she's "gonna tell on you"? Is she f__king 5 years old?

Weaselpanties − Your mother in law appears to have born with a rare genetic condition in which she is missing every part of her body but the a__hole.

Women shared their own stories of feeling “not real” after medical diagnoses.
samanthasgramma − if you think I didn't go through the "I'm not a real woman" thing, then you'd be sadly mistaken...

I am a PERSON... Gender doesn't mean a damned thing... It is the sum of YOU that makes up who you are.

[Reddit User] − Hi! I have MRKH too... I know exactly what you mean about those feelings about not being a “real” woman.

The husband was universally praised as an absolute hero.
OldKnitwit − "When someone shows you who they are, believe them."

Well, your DH is showing you who he is: he's your life partner who's got your back... Believe him, honey.

rainbowbrighteyes − The line about yours being designer is the GD best- yay DH!

Commenters from the LGBTQ+ community offered solidarity and advice.
[Reddit User] − Hey so I -am- trans, and you are not fake... Your mil is an ass for not getting it at all. I like your husbands way of...

ThePolitePhysicist − I actually AM a lesbian and I've had a few people be a little too involved with labeling me.

The policy I've adopted is that unless the person is my wife... I always say something like "you're a little too involved in my sexuality..."

How to Navigate a Situation Like This

When you share something personal and it gets turned against you, it can feel like a deep betrayal. It is okay to retreat and protect yourself. You do not owe anyone an explanation, especially when they have proven they will not listen with an open heart.

Placing that person on a strict “information diet” is a healthy next step. Share only surface-level details with them moving forward. Your deep feelings, your struggles, and your victories are reserved for those who have earned your trust.

Lean heavily on your support system—the people who, like the OP’s husband, see you and love you for exactly who you are. Their voices are the ones that matter. Let their love be louder than the ignorant noise of others.

Conclusion

This story is such a powerful reminder that our bodies do not define our worth or our womanhood. It also beautifully illustrates that the family we choose can be the strongest fortress against the cruelty of the world. Heranus tried to make the OP feel small and “fake,” but all she really did was reveal how magnificent the love between the OP and her husband truly is.

How do you protect your heart when dealing with willfully ignorant people? We would love to hear your thoughts on finding strength in love and rising above the noise.
