Man Says Wife’s BIL Cannot Visit Anymore Due To Inappropriate Story He Tells Children

in Social Issues

A husband drew a firm line in his own living room when his wife’s brother-in-law ignored repeated warnings and launched into an unsuitable story aimed at the couple’s young child. The dad quickly stepped in, removed his son from the room, and asked the guest to leave after the man mocked him for setting that boundary.

The wife felt torn between supporting her husband and standing by her sister, who refused to visit without her own husband. Family loyalty collided with parental protection in a raw confrontation that left both partners questioning where their priorities truly lay.

A husband sets a firm boundary against his disrespectful brother-in-law to protect his child and home.

Man Says Wife's BIL Cannot Visit Anymore Due To Inappropriate Story He Tells Children
Not the actual photo.

'AITAH for telling my wife her brother-in-law can't come over to our house anymore?'

I hate my sister-in-law's husband. Let's call him Bret. Bret is awful in many ways,

but the worst thing about him is that he has no respect for other people. Even in my own home he frequently disrespects me.

The final straw was when Bret started to tell my child a story from work that was not necessary for a child to hear.

I told Bret to stop. He said it was fine. I said this is my house, and it is not fine.

He started to continue the story anyway, and I sent my child out of the room. Bret started making fun of me, so I asked him to leave.

After Bret and my sister-in-law left, I told my wife Bret can't come over anymore.

She said "are you asking me or telling me?" I said she can look at it either way, but he does need to be at our house or around our...

She said I can't tell her not to have her family here. She said she would never tell me not to have my family here.

I said no, that if a member of my family disrespected her I would kick them out and stop speaking to them without needing to be told or asked.

She said Bret's wife is her sister. I said I'm fine with her sister being here, just not him.

She said her sister won't come over without him. I said maybe they should meet up elsewhere.

My wife said I'm not going to tell her who she can and can't have over and that I'm being a d__k for even trying.

I can't believe she's choosing Bret over her own husband.

The husband drew a clear line after repeated disrespect culminated in an unsuitable story shared with his child. He asked the brother-in-law to stop, faced pushback, removed the child from the situation, and eventually banned future visits to safeguard his family’s peace and the kids’ well-being.

Many would argue the core issue isn’t just one awkward evening but a pattern of boundary violations that erode trust in the marriage. The wife viewed the request as controlling, emphasizing loyalty to her sister, while the husband highlighted that he would instantly side with her against any disrespectful member of his own family.

Commenters overwhelmingly sided with the dad, pointing out that prioritizing a child’s safety should trump extended family convenience. One noted how the sister’s unwavering support for her husband contrasted sharply with the wife’s hesitation, turning the spotlight on partnership dynamics.

This situation shines a light on broader family dynamics, where in-law conflicts can strain even strong marriages. Research shows that disagreements over in-laws often predict lower marital satisfaction and higher divorce risk. For instance, a study found that when spouses disagree about their relationships with each other’s families, it significantly raises the chances of relationship trouble over time.

Psychologist Dr. Ashurina Ream, a licensed clinical psychologist specializing in maternal mental health, emphasizes the importance of clear limits: “Setting boundaries with in-laws and family members isn’t disrespectful or entitled. It’s important for our well-being – and it’s also part of having a healthy relationship in the long run.”

This advice feels particularly relevant here, as the husband’s firm stance aimed to protect not just his authority in his home but also his child’s exposure to potentially normalizing inappropriate behavior.

On the child safety front, experts warn that seemingly minor escalations can sometimes signal grooming patterns if unchecked. Elizabeth Jeglic, Ph.D., a leading researcher on grooming behaviors, has explained in discussions on child protection that adults must stay vigilant because “grooming happens when adults are too polite to protect kids.”

While no one is accusing anyone of worse intent in this story, the principle underscores why parents instinctively prioritize shielding children from uncomfortable or adult-themed content in their own home.

Neutral paths forward often involve calm, united conversations as a couple first, then communicating boundaries kindly but clearly to family. Couples therapy or resources on healthy limits can help navigate these sticky situations without permanent rifts.

Take a look at the comments from fellow users:

Some users emphasize that the wife is the bigger issue for failing to protect the child and prioritize family over her BIL.

Rigel-idk − Your wife needs to back you up on this.

KronkLaSworda − NTA Your wife is a bigger problem than the BIL, though. She should be protecting your kid over "family".

f00lish − Your wife is making the situation about her, when it should be about your child, and you three as a single unit.

The fact that she's prioritizing her sister's husband over her own child is, quite frankly, concerning.

Especially given the context of the story he told and how he acts around children in general.

NTA OP, and please hold your ground on this. Your child is counting on you.

Some people highlight the potential danger of Bret’s behavior as grooming or escalating inappropriateness and urge strong protective action.

celticmusebooks − Was the nature of the inappropriate story s__ual?

My former officemate had a BIL who would tell borderline inappropriate stories in front of the kids

and (in hindsight) the level of inappropriateness subtley increased over time.

When the BIL was arrested and tried for possession of child p__n and abusing some of the kids to various degrees

the police officer actually cited the escalating comments as a type of grooming to normalize the ideas to the potential victims.

It's disturbing that your wife prioritizes her BIL over her own child. That's a massive parenting fail. MASSIVE.

You may need to have the talk with your child/children about safe and "unsafe" people.

Others focus on the wife’s sister supporting her husband and suggest practical ways to avoid Bret without compromising the home.

ViciousAstur − She said her sister won't come over without him At least her sister backs her husband up, unlike your wife. NTA, I would kick him out too.

kittyhm − NTA. I'd actually announce every time he showed up "Well, Uncle Bret is here. Get your coats kid(s)!" and leave the house.

She can have him over. You and the kid(s) don't have to stay and be subjected to him.

Good time to take everyone to visit your side of the family or do something fun.

Few-Tone-9339 − Maybe your wife should go stay with them for a bit.

Some users stress that it’s the OP’s house too and that no one unwanted should be allowed in, while calling out Bret’s behavior.

glima0888 − Your wife needs to smarten the f__k up. Bret sounds lile a d__chebag and shouldn't be around kids

[Reddit User] − You are NTA. Him disrespecting you in your own house is inexcusable. Your wife should agree.

I'm curious if Bret drinks a lot, that sounds like a__oholic behavior to be honest.

[Reddit User] − It’s your house just as much as it’s her house. No one should be in your house that you don’t want there

In the end, this family’s clash boils down to one dad’s effort to keep his home a safe, respectful space for his kids. Do you think his boundary was reasonable given the circumstances, or should he have compromised for family harmony? How would you handle a similar tug-of-war between spouse and in-laws?
