Man Demands Apology After Boss Wakes His Wife At 5:50 AM Over A “Non-Issue”

When it comes to work-life boundaries, some things should just be non-negotiable. OP found this out the hard way when his boss called him at 5:50 AM. But it wasn’t just the early call, it was the fact that after OP didn’t answer, his boss then called OP’s wife, waking her up in a panic over a minor work issue.

OP was understandably upset and demanded an apology from his boss for disturbing his wife. Is he being unreasonable for drawing the line here, or is his boss’s behavior way out of line? Read on to see how this early morning drama unfolds and whether OP’s request for an apology is justified or overblown.

not the actual photo

'Aitah for telling my boss to apologize to my wife?'

My boss called twice at 550am. I was in the BR. After I didn't answer, he called my wife, at 555am, and woke her up to get me.

She later told me that she was super freaked out thinking something happened to me, she had no idea, in the moment, if I was home or not.

It was over a customer machine that was "not working" that I was programming the day prior.

I rushed in and it was indeed working, albeit they suffered some down time on 3rd shift.

I called him out in an email and said this was unacceptable behavior and demanded an apology to my wife.

Am I absolutely crazy? To me, it's common sense to wait until 7am or 8am, unless it's literally a matter of life and death.

In this situation, the man is expressing a legitimate concern about personal boundaries being violated by his boss. The frustration stems from the fact that his wife was unnecessarily woken up early in the morning, causing her distress over a work-related issue that didn’t appear to be urgent.

This situation wasn’t about the machine being broken, it was about the lack of respect for personal time and the emotional toll it took on his wife.

At the emotional core, the man is simply asking for respect, both for himself and for his wife. His request for an apology isn’t about making a big deal out of a small mistake, it’s about acknowledging that waking someone up at 5:55 a.m. over a non-urgent work matter can cause unnecessary stress and anxiety.

This could have been easily avoided if the boss had waited until a more reasonable hour, or communicated in a less intrusive manner, like sending an email or text.

A different perspective might argue that the boss was just doing his job and trying to resolve the issue quickly. However, this perspective overlooks the impact of interrupting someone’s personal time.

Professional boundaries are essential in any workplace, and constantly infringing on an employee’s personal time without good reason can lead to resentment and burnout.

Psychological research supports the idea that respecting personal boundaries is crucial to maintaining good relationships and mental well-being.

According to Harvard Business Review, respecting personal boundaries at work is key to preventing burnout and fostering healthy professional relationships. When personal time is constantly disrupted for non-urgent issues, it can lead to higher stress levels and dissatisfaction.

Additionally, violating personal boundaries can lead to increased stress and anxiety, as explained by Psychology Today. This is especially true when the violation is unexpected and involves unnecessary emotional strain, like being woken up in the middle of the night over something that isn’t an emergency.

The man’s request for an apology is not unreasonable. He simply wants his boss to acknowledge the impact of his actions on his personal life and the distress caused by the unnecessary intrusion. Setting clear boundaries between work and personal life is crucial for maintaining a healthy balance and protecting the well-being of all involved.

See what others had to share with OP:

These commenters agree that the boss was unprofessional for contacting the wife for a work-related matter

Altoidman33 − Why does your boss have your wife's number? EMERGENCY contact (read: EMERGENCY)? You have every right to be upset. NTA

Kwickpick77 − NTA. I assume your boss has your wife's number as an emergency contact.

Those exist to contact loved ones in the event there is an emergency involving you. This is highly inappropriate professional behavior.

KiwiAlexP − NTA - unless you are on call there is no excuse to be contacted before 7am

Pkrudeboy − Go directly to HR, that’s wildly unprofessional.

Over-Box1733 − NTA. He has no business calling your wife for a business issue.

These commenters share personal experiences or offer perspectives that reinforce the idea that contacting a family member for work matters outside of reasonable hours is a breach of boundaries

aleronick247 − For some added clarity, It's a small company, he's one of three owners, I've been there 10y.

We are friendly & been to each other's kids grad parties etc.

Work has called her for work related stuff before, when I've been out of commission (hospital) but never at ridiculous times of the day and I never cared.

If it were any time after 8am, I would not have a problem with it, at all.

AnotherRandomDFF − This happened to me actually about 15 years ago. My husband is in tech and the "go to guy".

He was in the shower and I was asleep. I worked nights at an ER vet, and used to stay up and have breakfast with him and then go to...

I had just gotten to sleep when I heard his cell ring, then his work cell, then his cell followed by the work phone.

Our landline then rang, I answered it "Someone better be dead. "

The guy was not his boss, or anyone that he reported too, let's call him Rick (not his real name).

Rick was unprepared for my greeting and had the balls to tell me I shouldn't answer the phone like that before he identified himself.

Very full of himself, old Rick was. He asked after my husband and I said he's in the shower,

and to leave him a message on his work cell and my husband would get back to him.

Rick didn't like that very much and told me to go get him. That went over like a fart in church.

I reiterated that he needs to call my husband's phone and hung up.

I went into the bathroom to tell my husband I was going to k__l this coworker of his and he handled it.

He went to HR, his boss and Rick's boss, and it was explained to Rick that he was out of line.

I went to have lunch with the office a few days later at the local shawarma place, and Rick was there. Best lunch ever, he couldn't even look at me.

ConfidenceNext6385 − I’m in North America and I had a boss in Hong Kong. I always answer my work cell phone.

For some reason he decided to call my home landline at 2am. I later called him out on it privately.

I said the landline is for family emergencies only and don’t call it again.

He didn’t, and he was let go before I was so I win, I guess.

This group focuses on the fact that the boss had no right to contact the wife, especially if the employee wasn’t on the clock

Ok_Drink8072 − Wtf? He was way out of line.

TroublesomeTurnip − Idk if you weren't on the clock, he has no right to hassle you or your wife. NTA

DryCollege9889 − That's an HR issue

These commenters express skepticism about getting an apology from the boss

Bubbly_Following7930 − nta but good luck getting am apology.

Anyone obnoxious enough to call like that in the first place isn't going to feel bad about it.

Thistime232 − You better be very valuable to the company, or be willing to quit, if that's the move you're going to pull.

Do you think the OP was right to call out his boss, or did he overplay his hand? How would you handle this work-related intrusion? Share your thoughts below!
