Mom Takes Back A Toy After Her Kids Insult Her, But Their Dad Says She Went Too Far

Parenting is full of moments where a simple situation can suddenly become a lesson about gratitude, respect, and consequences. Sometimes the hardest decisions are not about what punishment fits, but about teaching children how their actions affect others.

The original poster (OP) is a single mother raising five children and recently bought her twin sons a toy they had been asking for. Instead of being excited, the boys complained, criticized the gift, and treated her poorly when things did not go exactly how they wanted.

After taking the toys away to address their behavior, OP’s ex-husband accused her of handling the situation incorrectly. Read on to see why this parenting disagreement became a much bigger debate.

'AITA for takeing away a toy that I had just given to my kids?'

I (36 f) am a single mom of 5 children. 7 year old twin boys, 3 year old twin girls, and a 2mo baby boy.

Their father left last year early on in the pregnancy with our youngest and moved across country.

While he hasn't been physically involved or met our youngest, the boys know they can call him whenever they want,

and generally I try to give them all space when they talk.

Last week, the boys asked for a specific jurassic world toy. They have quite a few but not this one.

When I went to the store that EXACT toy happened to be on clearance and there were two left on the shelf,

so I just figured out how to make the budget work and brought those suckers home.

I got home, and I gave the dinosaurs to them while their sisters were at their dance class… and listened to them complain for 20 minutes that I had gotten...

I pulled up the video that they had shown me when they asked for them, and they said it was the wrong color/size.

I suggested getting them out of the box maybe they just needed to see it with its tail attached and out of the box.

They didnt want me to help open the boxes because I would ruin it, so I got them their scissors and let them do it.

One boy cuts though part of the box and started shouting at me about how I didn't stop him from makeing a mistake.

I told him to stop talking to me that way, I offered to help and you quite rudely yelled at me no.

At this exact moment his brother decided to tell me that this toy was stupid and he named a different dinosaur he wanted.

He just… kinda slammed the whole thing on the ground.

So I stood up, took both the dinosaurs still in their boxes, and put them in my closet.

I told them maybe we would try again tomorrow when I figure out what the heck is going on in their noggin's

but this isnt how you speak to me or how you treat people who just did something nice for you.

I get a call that evening from their dad, asking what was going on, that the boys said I was taking all of their toys and throwing them away.

I sort of explained the situation, and what they said to me.

He was quite for a long time because this was how HE used to speak to me, and he had never heard it from them before. It only truly started...

He said they were wrong but I was equally wrong for taking something away that I had just given them,

that it's going to make them think that their belongings aren't actually theirs.

I said we are going to have to disagree because this wasn't some toy they were just using in a way I disagreed with,

they were being complete boogers to me as a direct response to the gift itself.

We ended the call before it got to heated, and I just don't believe what I did was wrong.

When I asked him he suggested I should have done, he just said “

I don't have all the answers for you OP, just that you made the wrong choice here " and now I have gone from confused and a little hurt to...

Few moments in parenting are as emotionally difficult as feeling hurt by the very people you are working hardest to care for. Parents often give their time, money, and energy with the hope of creating happiness, so when that effort is met with anger or disrespect, the pain is about much more than the object involved.

In this situation, the OP was not simply taking away a toy. She was reacting to a moment where she felt unappreciated and disrespected after trying to do something thoughtful for her children.

The emotional conflict here comes from the difference between disappointment and disrespect. Children are allowed to dislike gifts, make mistakes, or feel frustrated when expectations are not met. At seven years old, emotional regulation is still developing, and children often struggle to express disappointment appropriately.

However, the OP’s concern was not that her sons wanted a different dinosaur. It was the way they responded: criticizing her effort, speaking harshly, refusing help, and treating the gift carelessly. The toy became a symbol of a larger issue—whether they could express their feelings while still showing respect toward the person who cared enough to buy it.

A helpful psychological perspective comes from Dr. Laura Markham, a clinical psychologist and parenting expert who focuses on emotional connection and discipline. She explains that effective parenting involves setting limits while helping children understand their emotions and the impact of their actions.

She emphasizes that discipline is not about punishment or making children suffer, but about teaching children appropriate behavior and emotional responsibility.

This perspective helps explain why the OP’s reaction is understandable, but also why the situation requires careful handling. Taking the toys away temporarily can be viewed as setting a boundary around gratitude and respectful behavior rather than claiming permanent ownership over the children’s belongings.

The message was likely not “your toys are not yours,” but rather “we do not treat people badly when they try to do something kind for us.” However, the effectiveness of that lesson depends on how the conversation continues afterward. Children benefit most when consequences are connected clearly to behavior rather than experienced as unpredictable loss.

The situation is also complicated by the family changes happening around the children. Their father’s absence during a major transition may be affecting them emotionally, and children sometimes express insecurity or anger through behavior they do not fully understand.

That does not excuse disrespect, but it provides important context. The OP may be dealing with both normal childhood frustration and emotions related to a significant family change.

Ultimately, the goal is not simply deciding whether the toys should stay in the closet. The deeper lesson is teaching children that their feelings are valid, but their actions still matter. A child can say, “This isn’t what I expected,” without hurting someone who tried to make them happy.

The OP’s frustration came from wanting her children to understand that kindness deserves respect, and that is an important lesson for them to learn.

These Redditors supported OP’s parenting and said consequences were appropriate

Sharp_Lettuce4356 − NTA. You loved them enough to stretch the budget, and you love them enough to teach respect.

Seven-year-olds parroting their dad’s old hurtful words is heartbreaking for both sides.

Putting the dinosaurs away for a day wasn’t unloving it was loving guidance. You’re not taking away “their” toys forever, you’re protecting the love in your home.

You’re a good mom, even on the hard days always remember that

DecemberViolet1984 − NTA- from a mom of 4. That was good parenting and your ex doesn’t get to criticize when he doesn’t have boots on the ground.

RecordingNo7280 − NTA. What you did was parenting. Which is something that he doesn’t get to criticize since he isn’t contributing to parenting them.

This group agreed the children needed to learn that disrespectful behavior has consequences

ThrowRABake − INFO: Because you said you're a single mom, why is the absent father involved in the way you decide to raise

and discipline your children for acting out? Anyways, NTA here.

The children were acting spoiled and need to learn that this behavior is unacceptable.

If you simply gave them the toy, they'll learn that behavior is rewarded and it will continue.

Learning consequences early is important for development.

Far-Belt9950 − NTA and you know that. Your kid's father treated you horribly, and now they are.

They can deal with mild consequences, like not getting to play with the toy they apparently hate for a day. You made the right choice.

No_Remove5947 − You didnt make the wrong choice, actions have consequences and they can't run to their dad because theyre being reasonably punished.

In future, id say "No, thats not what happened. " And leave it at that. If he pushes, say the boys are aware why theyre being punished.

You dont need to justify this kind of parenting decision with your ex.

These commenters criticized the ex for being absent while still judging OP’s parenting choices

vrcraftauthor − NTA First of all, deadbeat dad doesn't get a say. He taught his sons how to treat you and then he bailed.

You're raising 5 kids alone. How about he shuts up and sends you some child support?

You should also consider getting the kids some therapy. They obviously aren't handling Dad leaving very well.

IntrepidMuch − NTA! NTA! NTA! ! In fact, your boys left you with no other recourse but to remove the toys.

The real bellend though is your ex. You did wrong, according to him, but he couldn’t tell you how better to have resolved the situation. Eff him.

Designer-Lettuce-690 − NTA he is and he knows ti. He taught his sons to disrespect women i hope he feels like a big man.

My parents would have actually thrown out the toy and chucked like soap and cola all over it so i couldnt get it out the bin if i treated anyone...

kurokomainu − NTA The bigger picture here is that you can't let your kids know that they can successfully use one parent against the other like this.

If you can't get through to your ex and make him see this, at least you can make sure that your kids know that lying to their dad

("the boys said I was taking all of their toys and throwing them away")

to try to get him on their side so they can get their way will guarantee them getting the opposite result.

I would take away these specific Jurassic World toys altogether.

They just don't get to have them now -- not just for their rudeness, but for their lies and attempt at arm-twisting you through their dad.

If you enable their tactic it will only be the start of it. There is no peaceful giving in so all is well thereafter.

giving in will result in more confrontations because they will lie more often to get their way and their dad will believe them.

It's better to stand your ground now even if your ex is unhappy, so that the precedent is firmly set that this doesn't work and only has bad results.

Do you think she handled the situation fairly, or should she have approached the lesson differently? How would you respond if your child reacted this way to a gift? Share your thoughts below!
